So I'm interested in buying a bass guitar and I've been reading up on it on the web and checking stuff out and reading all the DMB message boards too so I was just wondering what everyone thought would be a good beginner bass. I've been told Ibanez GSR 200 or any Modulus would be the best way to go and to stay away from Johnson's and Washburn's, but any other recommendations? I'm thinking something 4-string and fretted, is that the way to go for a beginner bass or should I get a 5-string? 6-string? No frets? Any help or opinions would be awesome. Thanks a lot.

start out with a 4-string and work your way up if you so desire. Depends on what kind of money you want to spend and what typed of music you play, but look at Carvins- they're nice and have a good variety of price ranges. www.carvin.com

I would definitely start out with a 4 string, standard bass, with frets.
I'm not sure what your interest in buying one is, but this was mine. I record music I write on my computer and since I don't have a band I have to play all the parts. I bought a bass because I think they're absolutely neccesary to most music.
I bought a Fender Strat Bass, which is more expensive than others, for $375 I think. The reason I went all out is because, even though I'm not a bassist, I wanted a good bass incase I fell in love with it. The way I look at it, spending almost $400 on a bass is not as bad as spending $2000 on a Taylor guitar or something if you don't play guitar.
Anyways, my Fender bass is very nice, I don't play it all the time but I play it enough and have no regrets that I didn't buy a cheaper one. You can always buy a used bass if you're looking to save money.
Good luck, if you buy one I'm sure you'll love playing it. The bass is one of the most fun instruments I've played.

$375 is about exactly in my price range, I think I have $385 saved up. I already have an old amp my friend gave me so I don't have to worry about extra money to buy that which is nice. I've heard three or four people now say Fender is the best so I'm definitely leaning towards that. Thanks alot for your input and for everyone else's though, it's definitely helping me tons.

I have an old amp from the 70's that my uncle gave me. It's a Rosac, and I've never met anyone else who's heard of it. But it plays and sounds decent, and that's all you really need at first.
