Welcome to the Best Pull Opinion/Feedback/Source File Thread of Winter 2002.

This thread can be used to post comments about recordings and to get info on which recording is (in manys minds) the best and source file info. Also use this thread to find out when a recording has become available. So use this thread to your advantage. Get other opinions, list your opinions, and just keep track on the current recordings being spread.

Listed below is each of the played tour dates with taper info. Next to one of the pulls will be information regarding which is the best pull at this moment. If you click the tapers name the source file for that recording will come up for you to view.

If you happen to have a pull not listed here please at least send me the source file so that i can host it for others to view. My AIM screen name is JoeMal1121 and my email is Joe@antsmarching.org.

NOTE: It is very important that the tapers want you to know that this is nothing offical. Everyones opinions will differ. While I base all opinions on a computer and home stereo test of clarity, range, balance, vocals, crowd noise, and many other things these are still accurate notations. If you have any questions be sure to ask.

These are based on opinions and feedback. Every one of these recordings are good and each taper puts the same amount of work into them. We aren't saying anything bad about anyones work. We just like to pick one. But if you can download them all and listen for yourself that's what I would recommend.

to start downloading you can either download from the download page, there are servers for older shows http://www.antsmarching.org/music/servers/ or the other servers are found at http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Dave%20Matthews%20Band if you want to download DMB

I really appreciate it. I am looking for shows in particular: 12-11-02 Phillips arena, 07-09-02 Amsouth amphitheatre, and may 2001 oak mountan. Hopefully I can find them, if anyone has them e-mail me! Thanks!

Welcome to AM.org!

We have a download section here at AM.org that the staff and siteops keep up to date. It's one of the best places to download shows. You can currently download the 12-11-02 show off of the AM.org HTTP server. Just go to the home page and on the left click Download Shows.

I'm sort of new to the whole taping scene, but I was highly impressed that the Rochester (12/16) show was uploaded 27 or so hours after the end of the show. Personally, I find 2 weeks to be fair, if not a bit quick given that tapers have lives, too...so getting to download that show early this morning was really incredible.

Many thanks:multi

Cheers,
Dan

Well said..

Mr. Naylor did an amazing job, as always, to tape and get his recording converted, and start spreading it. Thanks Eric.

What's the call on 12/14? Ice or Willoughby? That's always a tough choice to make. Two of the best in the business.

I don't know, UC is already up but I am unable to make it viewable to the public. Everyones at MSG tonight and tomorrow and then mci so I don't know when I can get it so everyone can download it. As for Albany thanks to Fritz he will let me get it but again, it all depends on when I can get them so they are viewable. I can't say yes or no, it's out of my hands.

It was my first live show, and it was incredible! I knew DMB allowed people to tape, but I did not realize the level at which people taped... I LOVE IT!

If anyone knows the guys who were sitting in Sec 3, Row K (right in front of us), I want a copy of that show! I want to hear the efforts of their great work!

How did I ever survive not seeing the band live?!?!?! hehe

Was Brown the only taper at MCI? I'm downloading one off Furthur and I haven't gotten the txt yet. The quality isn't great and I'm hoping there's another version.

Has anyone ever suggested sponsoring the tapers? These guys buy there own equipment and everything, so maybe we should at least try to hook them up with better tickets.

Has anyone ever suggested sponsoring the tapers? These guys buy there own equipment and everything, so maybe we should at least try to hook them up with better tickets.

There were several tapers there. Yes the community does a pretty good job of getting the tapers in the best possible seats

Okay so I got a chance to compare Hayden Berard's 12/21 with Scott Brown's. This is going to come down to a personal preferance thing. Hayden's is very crisp-crisper than Scott's. Scott's is richer and fuller than Haydens. Butch is more pronounced on Hayden's tape-Stefan and Carter are more pronounced on Scott's (IMO). Anyway, over the years my ears have kinda gravitated to Scott's sound he gets with his equip. and again IMO it doesn't change with 12/21-I say Scott Brown.

it'll be interesting to see how mine compares to chris or eric's tape from mci. they were only 2 or 3 rows in front of me, and i've got the stinking suspition it was better to be a little further back at that venue since the stacks were so rediculously high. i walked up to get a beer about half way through the show, and i thought it sounded a lot better on the sides then on the floor... i know bob haag was up there.

also, check out bob's msg tapes when you can. they are very nice and were on the same stand as mine.

Thank you John Ice. I really enjoy your 12-22 recording. In my opinion you edged out Naylor by just a hair. Both are great recordings though. I went to that show so finding a good version of this was more important to me than the other shows.

For best recording of winter tour, from what I have heard so far would have to be Naylor's 12-16, its AWESOME!

01-06-2003, 01:26 PM
what do you mean scott? those crappy computer speakers most people use don't get the job done? :D

i'm currently looking to replace the speakers on my comp with some tannoy active monitors (would prefer genelec's but just can't afford em). should provide a more accurate setup than what i currently have (2 small satellite's and a powered sub). any suggestions on some other high end speaker systems?

i like tannoys, i currently have a pair of tannoy mercury bookshelf speakers and they've gotten the job done fine so far. i think i may upgrade to some new ones sometime soon though, just don't have the cash and havent heard enough to choose what i'd want....

scott brown

hey ice, what's your setup to the speakers?

2 things i forgot to mention before. find some high end audio shop, and go listen there to whatever speakers they have, then DO NOT BUY from them since they'll charge an arm and a leg. but find out what you like then buy online. hell, bring your own cds there and play them there to make sure you like what you hear. maybe you'll discover you love the tannoys, or like some b&ws or alesis monitors or earthworks monitors or whatever

second, think about an external d/a. i love my cd player (arcam alpha 7se) because the d/a is pretty nice, but my ears are starting to hear more now, and i think i'll be moving on to an external DAC. i may pick up a benchmark DAC1 depending on the size of my bonus, which i find out soon enough. this thing is the size of a 2k too, so while it's not dc powered, it is something you can throw in a backpack and bring on the road for listening at the hotel or whatever. an external d/a will open up your system and you'll hear things you dind't know were there (which can be both a good and bad thing)

i plan on hooking up an spdif out of my computer for 24 bit playback into it, plus hooking up my cd player and da-20mkii to it at home too so it'll take care of all my playback needs.

ice8888
01-06-2003, 02:30 PM
right now it's not a great setup...

i've got the yamaha YST-MS50 system running off the analog output on my audiowerk2. nothing spectacular, but it's not too bad either with the powered sub.

i have been looking at an external d/a when i upgrade the speakers. would love to pick up something like a lucid or apogee da1000 d/a converter if possible. how much does the benchmark converter run? i'm not necessarily looking to take this on the road with me because i don't travel very light as it is... and since most of my taping is outside of louisville it may not be practical. the other bitch of living here in louisville is we mainly get a lot of consumer grade crap, not professional type of stuff. i'm probably going to have to check out the really good musician's stores in town rather than the "hifi" home theater/home audio dealers. way too many sony products being sold. :)

i'm thinking that active/powered monitors are the way to go for me. i don't have much room in my one bedroom apartment, so buying another receiver isn't practical. however, i would love to build/re-furbish a tube amp...

>> i have been looking at an external d/a when i upgrade the speakers. would love to pick up something like a lucid or apogee da1000 d/a converter if possible. <<

the da1000 is 20 bit max i believe...

i was set on the lucid until i read reviews on the benchmark unit. the lucid is 650 i think and the benchmark around 730, and every review of the benchmark unit blows the lucid away...

i'll let you know what i think as i'll probably be dumb and order now, pay later....hehe

ice8888
01-06-2003, 04:41 PM
ha. unfortunately i have done that for too long a time period... i'm now "paying the piper" so to say and paying off my credit cards. would like to finally be out of debt. the good news is that i bought my mini-me, did the fall tour, and paid for christmas all in cash. so at least i didn't rack up debts that way.

you are right in that the apogee is max 20 bit. will that matter right now though since all i am running is dat which is 16 bit? i mean, i think i can pick up a da1000 for less than $300, but it may be better to drop the cash and pick up the benchmark. not right now though...

ice

it won't matter for the dat, but the da1000 is OLD as hell, and the m-audio superDAC for 200 bucks might have newer, better sounding electronics in it. not sure about that, but i think you know what i mean. old as hell and you never hear people raving about the da1000 quality the same way they did with the ad1000

if i get a dac1, like i said it's kind of small, i could let you borrow it to see what a d/a would add to your system. i think it'd be cheap to mail out, just like a minime or something like that. probably cheaper actually since it'd be less insurance

what i like about the dac-1 is the 30 day money back guarantee nutter has on it. just hope there's no "restocking fee"

a statement like this makes me ask, what is everyone listening on?

sure, my opinions as to what sources I like best differ from others, and that's to be expected since we all listen for different things. but a statement like the one above confuses me a little. so what are you listening on that makes these 2 sound "EXACTLY the same?"

i'm sure ice and bobbo would disagree that they're sources sound "EXACTLY the same" too...

well, i guess i shouldnt have said they sound EXACTLY the same, there are some slight differences (of course due to the different rigs) but to my naked, not very well trained ear they sound very similar. im sure some tapers who know the differences between mics, rigs, etc can hear the differences, but im just a casual listener, and they both sound very good :)

well, i have to say i can tell a difference in both our tapes from those two nights... i think bob's tape has a little more bass for 12.20, but is no where near as crisp in the mid's and high's (probably a function of my hypers running a-b and bob running x-y) that night. as for night 2... i think mine is just crisper and more defined (albeit slight), and a little louder. probably a function of the mini-me vs. the sbm-1. but hey, talk to bob and he probably thinks his is better. both are great tapes. you really can't go wrong with any of the tapes circulating. like my grandma says... "opinions are like assholes. everyone's got one."

i went to 12/10, and i'll admit it has been a long time since i went to an indoor show. it sounds awful inside with all the music bouncing all over the place. (i was in lower section 115 row g)

i d/l'ed one of the pulls for this show, burned it and listened to it in 3 different players, (a bose home theater system is one). it must be the venue, cause i think it sounds like it's underwater...
like it did at the show.
i won't name the taper out of respect, and my own ignorance for the equipment, but can you see any real difference between the two tapers' versions?
two people on this thread picked each of these guys for that night, obviously it's an opinion.
my thinking is that they can not be so far apart, so much so, that i should be looking for the other pull, right?
after all, shit in, shit out, right?

(no offfense to anyone - i am simply referring to the venue)
and no matter, i am extremely grateful for the opportunity to have this show, thank you tapers~

I decided I wasn't going to put anything next to the sources for this tour.

1) Because I got a lot of complaints

2) You can look through the thread and see what people want

3) AM.org has now put in a feature where users can vote on a recording that they like. You can use this feature also for feedback.

go to the Tour Center pages and go to the show you want to check and to the right should be a option to see source votings.

Maybe it was because I have only heard it right from the DAT run through the awesome stereo in his Navigator (:p), but I think Copher's 12-11 deserves a nomination for one of the top 3 recordings of the tour.

Plus, it was my favorite DMB show I've been to, so that helps. :D

I have downloaded many "eric naylor" sourced shows... All I have to say is: "Naylor, you are my recording god". Honestly, I have trouble at times distinguishing between his recordings and dsbd recording, they are that good. I can't say they are the "best", as I have not heard all of the other sources for ALL of the shows, but of the shows I've downloaded which he sources, his are awesome..... Also, how does he get to so many damn shows with such good seats??? has someone been a warehouse member for a long freaking time???

I am trying to download the file for the winter tour 2002 at the St. pete times forum, 12-10-2002. There is no link beside the file that says "bt download". Does this mean it is not available? or ami doing something wrong? When you click on the "Chrostowski(ccm4v" link it opens a text file but no bt down load? Please help. Thanks. :monkey
