Hey all. I currently have a Shure Beta Green 1.1 for live shows, which works decent, but I'm really looking for a good recording mic now. I'll be recording with Steinberg Nuendo on my computer, and trying to make a pretty professional recording. I'm looking for something that will pick up my vocals well, not have any fuzzy background noises, etc. Any suggestions? Looking for something within the $100 price range.
Thanks!

Go with a shure SM-58. 90 bucks and should do the job just fine

For recording? I thought that was a live mic... The problem with my Shure is that everything sounds very muddled if I try to record with it...I want a crisp clear sound...will the SM58 do it?

From what i know the 58 has a nice tight pattern and it doesn't pick up much side noise. unforunately you won't be able to have a great studio mic for $100 or less. also, a good preamp never hurts

Hm...if you don't mind me asking, what exactly is a pre-amp?
Also, if I'm gonna get an SM58, I might as well ask: how is it live? Good?
Thanks for all your help!

preamps will taylor the signal before sending it to the computer or PA or whatever you're running the mic through. Some of the more expensive ones will even have effects such as a compressor--always good for controlling volume fluctuations while recording vocals.
The 58 is pretty much the standard for live vocals at that price range. Just about every bar or club I've played at uses 58s for vocals.

Look at SM58's- about the industry standard- everyone has used one at some time....if you're looking for a little more advanced stuff- cardiod polar patters, etc, try the Beta 57 or 58. They're lett utilitarian and more geared for strictly vocals. They're a little more pricey, but heck, with a good preamp, everything can sound great :)
