i was listening to live at luther college just before and i kinda sat{once again!} in amazement at "stream"......but I was thinking....Dave is definately my guitar hero but, if you HAD to choose...who is a better guitarist...Dave or Tim?
I'm stuck...............
I love Timmy but, I gotta go with Dave.....
What do you think?

There's really no competition- Tim Reynolds is a better guitarist, hands down. His speed, improv ability, technical ability, etc, all blow Dave out of the water.

If you were to ask who is a better writer, however, that'd be a different story.

Tim Reynolds is MUCH better than Dave..no competition. Dave just has a better writing style IMO and has many other talents, than just pure raw guitar playing. singing being prime among them.

But in terms of technical ability on the guitar, not many can compete with Tim.

Actually, when you really get down to it, Dave isn't really a "great" singer either. But his voice compliments his style of music so perfectly. (Either that or it's just that it's what we are used to hearing.)

He's definatly not a bad singer, but not a great one.

I think his greatest talent is his song writing.

Solid post, I have to agree with those points about Dave Matthew's voice.

Some singers match their music very well, others don't.

well Dave might not be Kelly Clarkson but he's a great singer, in my opinion. he never (extremely rarely) goes off key, and he adds so much texture to the songs. but when he smokes a few bowls before going on like in Storytellers, his voice gets a bit sandy. :)

He's different. Good voices come a dime a dozen. Unique voices like Dave are rare.

on pure guitar talent i would most definately hsve to say tim reynolds. dave musical writing abilities and his lyrics make better overall though. yes his voice is not the greatest but it fits in perfectly with the music he writes. i have lots of friends who cant stand his voice or sometimes understand a word he says but his voice takes some getting used to.

If i could to have the talent of Tim or Dave, i'd most definatly choose dave.

And if we're tlaking about voice we don't like (like your friends) then I nominate Mayer. I just can't stand it.

Tim can play. Dave can write. Some may say Tim writes as well...but I'm talking about music...

j/k Timmy wrote some cool songs, but really Dave is an amazing songwriter. Not much of a player but hey, a lot better than me.

when i started this post i just thought it'd be interesting to hear other fans' opinions....i think before ,i was clouded by my respect/love/admiration for dave as an artist, musician and as a person. i do really love his guitar playing but you guys are right tim is definately technically better than dave......but i do actually think that if dave had JUST been concentrating on his guitar skills then he'd be up there with tim, because he DOES have the raw talent to be that good......but his songwriting is amazing....I LOVE EM' BOTH!
anyway its great to hear your opinions anyway-thanx:) :p

his voice is poo. no range. and he writes subpar lyrics IMHO. his guitar playin can be pretty cool though...at times...which happen to come heinously far apart from each other.
