i have been playing guitar since december. so far i can play:
crash
SMTS intro
Stay
Sattelite
WAYG intro
Drive(incubus)
41
big eyed fish
warehouse is kicking may ass
motorcycle driveby(third eye blind)
other random stuff (chords, etc..)
alright anyway...where were your skills at after playing for 2 months? i am not taking any lessons, just teaching myself.

There's no way to compare just by looking at a list of songs. I talked to somebody once that said "oh, i can play this, and this, and this" and then I heard them play and they had rhythms totally wrong and it really didn't sound like they could play it, but they thought they had it down really good. So you'd have to record some of your stuff and post it if you really want an opinion of how we think you're doing.

I understand what you're saying. I dont know how to put soundbytes on here. I play these songs infront of friends and they say they sound like it and have the same rhythm.

dude, if youve been playing since decmeber and you can play those songs that you listed, you're doing great. Keep it up.

I've been playin since April and I can't play some of the songs you listed.
I went the route of learning chords and what not before I even looked at a tab, and I havent tried to learn too many new songs since September
I've probably got 20 songs memorized

I wanna know a girl to play a guitar with (at least I assume thats you in the picture) Looks like a good list, I think once you get warehouse down with SMTS you will be able to play 90% of his songs, IMO Keep it up.

what i found worked the best for me is i learn with one of my good friends that is just starting to play guitar also. so my motivation is to kick his ass in everything we try on the guitar. works wonders for me. i just sit around and practice when there is nothing better to do.

i disagree..i like trying to learn several songs at a time...when i try to learn justy one song, I get frustrated and the fun is taken out of playing guitar...by learing several at once, it keeps tings fresh

yeah true....i love it when i get pissed and feel like throwing the damn guitar out the window. that is when i move onto a different song. however, anyone else go through this....when you get pissed at a song and give up, then you try it again a day or 2 later do you sound better? that happens to me all the time...its almost like i practice in my sleep or something

I call this the Gel period. Learn the basic structure, then put the guitar down for a time, (hours, days, whatever) then come back to it and play the same thing. After things have gelled your muscles start showing their muscle memory and things start to fall into place.

Well I started playing my guiatar about 4 years ago, my first year at purdue. As much as I know im not great, I think im really mastered some Dave songs. And not just learn to play them, but actually make them sound pretty impressive even to myself...hehe, at least it sounds pretty good played with the music.
I think the key to playing dave tunes by yourself is get acoustic guitar tabs. You will find yourself being able to play things and perfectly mimic the way dave plays some of his songs. I recommend watching storytellers and learning the songs he plays with tim.
If I had to pick one song I think Ive mastered in 4 yrs it is tripping billies acoustic version. Its the one song with the stone that I can definately play every part of w/o missing beats here and there. IF anyone goes to purdue and plays the guitar or lives in Indiana, let me know and we can jam. Im always looking for people to play with.

i said earlier that 2 months ago wasnt the fisrt time that i EVER picked up a guitar. i had fooled around with some of my budies guitars here and there. so i knew the fundamentals. so after i got mine there hasnt been a day when i havent picked the guitar up and played for at least an hour. maybe if you had that dedication you could play too...
and i also said that WH IS kicking my ass....

I wouldn't use friends listening to you play as the barometer. Most people wouldn't notice missing beats or screwing up a note or two. Their just not trained musically. You could be playing it 60% right and they could say you are playing it right. The best way is to play with other musicians who have a lot more experience than you.
I have met numerous people who have said they can play a song and all they can do is pick the notes and were way off on the rhythm.
I'm not saying that this is true in your case but there is just not enough information. Unless you are have been playing 5-10 hours a day or have previous experience with other stringed instrument I am skeptical.

Bingo. I don't think his definition of being able to play a song is the same as mine. It takes much more time to really be able to play those songs...even for fast learners.

yeah people think just because they can play the riff for the stone, for example, they can play the song the stone. The two things are very different. Cohesion between the parts of a song often proves to be the most difficult.

Yea I don't know what a C major scale has to do with anything. In fact, i know several talented guitar players who would be dumbfounded if you asked them the same thing.

I don't move on to the next song until I perfect the one I am currently on, no matter how long it takes. I would rather have a small library of songs that I play well than a large one that sounds horrible.

im like you probably exactly like you, except i play like dave and pink floyd I know completely 8 dave songs sounding very similar I am not dave and can't play him exactly. But here is what I know:
LIOG, Typical Situation, So Much To Say, Crash Into Me, Dreamgirl, Satelite, #34, & Granny- (PF) Wish You Where Here, (JJ) Banana Pancakes, (GD) Ripple, (LZ) Stairway to Heaven, (LZ) Tangerine, (NY) Needle & The Damage Done, (RHCP) Under The Bridge, (GD) Time Of Your Life...there is liek two more but I forget, so if you want a gauge i got one, im not bragging i am just like you, so i guess take what you want off what I said, and congrats on playing what you play
