Good news Polarisites! My mom bought the cake in the church auction yesterday, and she was like "well no one here's gonna eat it, get rid of it... take it to your friend's houses." I was like... "No, I have a better Idea." Cake for all at KOCO!

Just got back from the signing... time for some backreading...

Got to Virgin Records close to ten. Boyd started around 10 till 11pm. Got a few albums signed around 1am with a good hour left of people behind. I would say around 500 plus or so. He was wearing a white cap with shades on all night. Got some close up shots that hopefully came out.

He chatted away for few minutes with everyone that came through. Probably the reason why it was a long night. He was relaxed as can be. I said "Keep those hands in good shape for tomorrow" He replied "I will" The place basically played DMB songs during the night. Lots of chat with lots of fans.

It was a nice warm night and people were just getting pumped for the shows coming up.
It was just a good opportunity to meet one of the guys. He made sure he didn't leave anyone out and that the best. The store was quite happening the whole time. I am sure there will be many more posts from people there. I need to get to bed so I can work comfortably throughout the day. Take care and see everyone there.

During the downtime between upcoming shows, the fit fiddler of the Dave Matthews Band plans to do what he has done on past tours. ‘‘I’m going to play a lot of music and work out a lot — just stay in the groove," Boyd Tinsley said by telephone.
The band will begin its 54-concert U.S. tour tonight at Germain Amphitheater in southern Delaware County.

Last year, between the jam sessions in amphitheaters, Tinsley carried the groove from the stage to a mini-studio on his bus.

Setting aside the fiddle with which he gives the band a distinct sound, he picked up a bass.

The bass lines, chord progressions, lyrics and melodies he mapped out eventually became selections on his first solo album, True Reflections — to be released today.

Players in a New York studio helped him turn the sketches into songs.

The musicians rounded up by producer Craig Street and by Chris Bruce, who cowrote many of the tunes with Tinsley: former John Mellencamp violinist Lisa Germano, rock-blues guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, blues songwriter Corey Harris, singer Toshi Reagon and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band of New Orleans — and someone named Dave Matthews.

"Craig had everyone else in mind. The only one I had in mind was Dave," Tinsley said with a laugh. "Craig would say, ‘Let’s bring down the Dirty Dozen Brass Band,’ and I’d say, ‘Yeah, let’s do bring down the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.’ "

Germano, who lends her voice but not her main instrument to his disc, "was a big influence on me when she played with John Cougar. She was the first person I heard where the violin was that prominent."

"Those musicians made this album," he said. "I owe so much to them. I feel I’m a part of this band. This isn’t a solo project. I’d say to the cats: ‘Hey, everybody in here is a great musician. Here’s the song, so just play. When it starts feeling good, let’s hit "record." ’ "

True Reflections is named for a popular Matthews Band concert number that Tinsley wrote in 1990.

Like the other songs on the album, it features him as lead vocalist.

"I have a great appreciation for songwriters and singers now," said Tinsley, who plays violin on several tracks. "I’ve never worked so hard in my life. But at the same time, it was the most rewarding thing I’ve done — other than playing in the Dave Matthews Band, of course. I had to figure out everything through trial and error."

The sound on True Reflections, whose compositions are more straight-ahead than the typical Matthews Band tune, represents a mix of blues, rock and country.

"I had no idea what my style was going to be," Tinsley said. "But I’m 39. I grew up in the ’70s listening to the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead and Dylan and all the great Motown bands. But when I started playing violin in the mid-’70s, it was classical music that came to the fore."

After the summer tour, he will take a band on the road to play clubs.

His bandleader plans to release a solo recording in the fall: Some Devil, featuring frequent Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds.

For the time being, many shows lie ahead.

"We’re five guys from Charlottesville, Va., who got together to play some songs Dave wrote," Tinsley said. "The whole goal is to get out there and rock the crowd, to play something better and take the music to another place."

J2H, how the hell are you staying up so late and posting??? I guess you made it home okay last night. When they threw us out they were just starting to do the employee photo's and signings, so you know he was wiped out. But he seemed grateful to meet every single one of us, from the first all the way to the last...US!!!
