Welcome to the Best Recording Opinion/Feedback/Source File Thread of D&T 2003.

This thread can be used to post comments about recordings and to get info on which recording is (in manys minds) the best and source file info. Also use this thread to find out when a recording has become available. So use this thread to your advantage. Get other opinions, list your opinions, and just keep track on the current recordings being spread.

Listed below is each of the played tour dates with taper info. If you click the tapers name the source file for that recording will come up for you to view.

Look through the thread for opinions on recordings. Many times Ants will make a list of their choices.

If you happen to have a recording not listed here please at least send me the source file so that i can host it for others to view. My AIM screen name is JoeMal1121 and my email is Joe@antsmarching.org.

NOTE: It is very important that the tapers want you to know that this is nothing offical. Everyones opinions will differ. While I base all opinions on a computer and home stereo test of clarity, range, balance, vocals, crowd noise, and many other things these are still accurate notations. If you have any questions be sure to ask.

These are based on opinions and feedback. Every one of these recordings are good and each taper puts the same amount of work into them. We aren't saying anything bad about anyones work. We just like to pick one. But if you can download them all and listen for yourself that's what I would recommend.

When can we expect the March 19 show from Oakdale to be up for download on AM.org? Specifically Brown's recording because i've heard grey street from his tape and its amazing.

Hey All,

Just wanted to let you all know that Hayden's pull from 3-19-2003 is up on alt.binaries.music.shn.dmb - I've attached the info file...

Grabbing Hayden's 3.19.2003 pull right now. Listened to a few tracks and, so far, the sound quality is excellent...

I actually hear that the best recording is probably going to be Brown's DPA recording, then Berard's, and then Brown's Schoeps version.

ajnelson4
03-21-2003, 06:31 PM
Cool, thanks John.... Quick question, what does DPA stand for? Or is that just the type of equip Brown used for that recording.

John Galt
03-21-2003, 06:42 PM
DPA are the microphones that Brown typically uses. He used a pair of Schoeps also for this show, but didn't like the way that it came it. Coluzzi, Maler, Travitz, and Becker are the ones that usually use the Schoeps.

Gotcha... Thanks man..

I think Scott Brown's DPA source had a problem with the second half of the show. I am not sure if Steve Shatteman ran his DPA rig, if so that will probably very comparable.

Also the schoeps tape Scott got is cut during ants and has earthworks audio spliced in but it sounds nice.

I think Eric Naylor taped it as well.

I like Hayden's, sound is nice.

EDIT: I just heard a clip of Eric's tape, WOW, I am pretty stunned at how clear and even it is. Definately better than Hayden's AKG or Scott's Schoeps. Just my opinion but I think you will all be amazed:)

is this a list of the total amounts of recordings, thus far, that exist? or just "the best"? im interested in knowing all of them that exist, if thats possible, just for my own records. obviously im patient and dont care when the info surfaces though, so thanks to all who help out :)

Right now I know of:

Schoeps M222/MK4 (Brown)
AKG 480/ck61 (Berard)
AKG 480/ck63 (Naylor)
Earthworks SR-77 (DeNardo)
DPA 4011 (Jones)

I've neard all except Jones, Naylors sounds the best IMHO!

DeNardo's is incomplete--he got there after grace.

Chris Jones just gave me his recordings from both 3.19 and 3.20 and his 3.19 is the best. Better than the Brown and Berard ones.

it will b spreading pretty quickly.

Also, Chris told me that he is rather certain that he is the only one who did not miss any of the show as far as switching tapes because he was running a DAT backup.

Hey all.... I know Naylor's 3.19 pull is floating around out there. Anyone have some inside info on whether or not it will be put up on the newsgroups? Just anxious to hear it - Compared Jones and Berard's pull's tonight.. They are pretty damn close, but I decided to stick with Berard's. Everyone is saying that Naylor's is better, which, if it is, it's gotta sound frickin' amazing.

can someone please post the MD5s for all of these shows? Andrew is falling behind on db.etree.org (nothing personal, but hes just not keeping up) and im getting sources mixed unitentionaly and wish to even it out.

Listening to both Berard's and Naylor's pulls from 3.19 and I think I'm going to retract my previous statement and say that Naylor's is the best pull out of the 2. I thought Berard's sounded awesome, but after listening to Naylor's had to change my mind. Naylor's is really crisp and clean sounding.. I also listened to Jones 3.19 and didn't think it was as good as Berard's or Naylor's. Just my opinions thus far....

Any news on good sounding pulls for the rest of the shows?

Matt DeNardo
03-25-2003, 09:48 AM
Could and did :-)

Scott was closest to me at the show, so I asked him for the first two songs from the Schoeps source and did some EQ. My info file for the 16-bit version reflects this. The other tapers were either much farther back or more toward the middle, so they weren't as good a match.

Incidentally, the 24-bit version is out there now, though it's missing that first song and a half. PM me if you're interested and I'll direct you where to get it.

-Matt

Hey Joe, thanks for setting this up, i know it's a hard thing to come up with the best, and truly any of the tapers' versions would be more than great, but with so many versions these days i'd rather hear from ppl who've been able to hear all the sources so i can decide which 1 source to dl. It's only b/c there are so many great tapers that this becomes nec. so like he said no offense to any tapers.

In the past I never wanted to do md5's. But a lot of people want them. It's really not the point of this thread and it would create so much more work (making sure they are the originals because the tapers only sometimes send them to me, hosting them would be a bitch because most md5's are named the EXACT same thing, organizing them all, etc.)

I saw if you can just attach them then do so.
(I'll try to see if the download forum can allow the file extension md5)

exactly. you'd have to start creating seperate folders. i agree, let etree be the system of record, thats what its there for.

since this is only 1 specific case for now. David Carlston post your email addy or pm me with your email and i will send them via email when i get home. what shows and who's source do you need md5's for?

ummm i would beg to differ on this one. i don't there would be a huge problem depending on where you got the show from. austin al posted a message about downloading a show from a server that was posted on ASTB and he had a .mp3 file listed in the md5. i know for a fact thats not an original md5.

I have only heard Scott's recording of West Point and I have to say I don't need to hear anymore. It is great.

Thank you for giving yourself a sore neck. I appreciate it.

this aud is fairly loud, clear, and heavy(not the right word, sorry) on the high end which is a must for D&T.

Dave speak is hard to hear at times but that is to be expected.

Im sure brown was there with his gear, i saw him and said hi before the show. I know he taped too cause he mentioned his sore neck from the sat/sun stealth jobs due to no stands. I guess his recording isnt out though, so thats my mistake.

And i want to get in touch with that greg guy cause he was a taper at the Buffalo Tim solo show, and id love a copy of that. if it in fact is the same guy we're both thinking of, hes i think in his 30s. was on the line waiting for tickets durring rcmh.

I'm already downloading Wang/Fulton from the newsgroup, but was curious as to which other sources may be released in the near future (don't worry, I'm patient). I saw a taper walking out with a set of Microtech Geffell cases... who's been recording with those lately? I also saw a group of tapers after the show... I think Wang and Fulton were in that crowd, and possibly Mike Vernal (I say that because I saw someone wearing a Harvard hat)? Just curious. It definitely felt good to leave the show feeling confident that there would be at least one good recording of the show available. Once again, major kudos and thanks to all the tapers!

Note:
Levels are a bit low in between songs.

Security was trying to keep all stands at head height. I started at about 12', as Dave and
Tim were coming on stage, I was asked to lower it to head height. Loving Wings and few other
songs have a few thumps due to raising/lowering of the stand, nothing that really affects
the recording all that much. I slowly went up after this point and by Cry Freedom, it was
probably around 14'.

Note:
Security tried to keep my stand at head height. As the lights went out, I went upto about
10', security noticed and made me put it down. A couple songs later I tried going back up and
made it to about 10' again, and then a fan complained about the head height. So instead of
having her complain all night and could possibly tell security, I ran at about 2' above head
height for the most part. And what do you know, the same girl who complained all show about the
height, asked me for a copy afterwards.

The crowd around me was pretty bad, lots of drunk screamers. For a little entertainment, pay
close attention to the yelling at the 9:08 mark in Two step.

so what do you guys like better? 3/29 Vernal or Brown? Brown's is crisper of a recording with way less crowd, but Vernal's has more of a well rounded, warmer sound, and sometimes that crowd adds to it just enough.

by the way, this isnt a personal dig at the tapers, but would it be so hard to update the info files with the names of tims solos? it just seems so blah to see "tim solo" on every file going around, even if its converted after they're named.

make sure you get the correct version. there is a source floating around without a d3t07 and d1t10 is the same song as d2t01.

there is a fixed version out there. just make sure you get that. look for a d3t07. that should be the fixed version.

Need a little help for someone out there that knows.

For the 3-28 show. The Schoeps MK4Vs source.

Who was that?

It's exactly Berners set-up. But Maler was listed to be recording and he uses a simular setup with schoeps.

EDIT: Ok, it's Berners. I remember being told he ran on same stand as brown.

I know that the minime source was reconverted... just wondering what difference the minime makes in the recording?

ron2uva
04-02-2003, 04:15 AM
that should be berner. maler was running the following.....

Taper: Chris Maler
Source: Schoeps CMC5 (modified)/MK41 > Apogee Mini-Me > Sony D8

* Modifications on CMC5 Amplifier Bodies:
Mylar coupling capacitors changed to Wima MKP 2 polypropylene film capacitors
Faster JFET (J305) (fet bias also trimmed to match mics)
European BC transistors switched to Hitachi bipolar transistors (2SA1085)

Modifications performed in an effort to open up transient detail and microharmonics, while reducing the top end spit from the European transistors. The mids are smoother. The new JFET is a very fast rf device optimized for low noise at high impedance.

at least that's what he was running @ boone. plus, chris has yet to convert his 3.28 tape, as he said here (http://www.anyoneseenthebridge.com/msgboard/showthread.php?s=&threadid=155045)

Both are great. Phipps' has a fuller sound, but Weaver's has more vocal clarity. I chose Weaver's.

*Sarnovsky's is also pretty good, but from the 3 songs I've sampled, it seems to have a bit more ambient crowd noise throughout.

i'd have to agree.. i actually had the opportunity to sit next to craig that night and even though there was some annoying people around us, the recording ended up working out and sounds really good. Could have had something to do with the fact we were sitting right in front of dave and tim and that he pulled the sound from the speakers at the front of the stage and actual sound from the stage. i think he did a great job, as always, and it was great to finally meet one of the awesome tapers this community has and get to thank him for everything he has done.

so i would defitely suggest taking a listen to his pull for the 3/26 show!:D

Ice, looked like you had the best location from the show, though there was someone over in section 2 but had to have the mic low cause of the craines. I didn't recognize or get a good look who it was. Any info who was there and what was used Ice?

ice8888
04-08-2003, 08:59 PM
no clue who it was. as high as those stacks were it's probably not a good tape from way up front, and will definitely have crowd issues from staying low. i could have moved up to 6th row on that side, but decided to stay where i was cause the stacks were way up there.

For Purdue, I was first row second balcony and stuck it straight out over the first balcony and it turned out pretty well. The crowd is kinda hard to handle at times but the songs are pretty good quality.

Joe M.
04-08-2003, 09:03 PM
Yea I noticed that too at ~15 feet you would have still been under the stacks and the sound. I was dead center 11th row so I didn't see but did they have monitors on the stage? Maybe thats what the low stand was trying for.

ice8888
04-08-2003, 09:07 PM
yeah, there were some monitors, but unless you were front row those would most likely be overpowered by the stacks.

That's a way to dispel a rumor. To respond saying, "I never said that" implies that he had quoted you as saying there was a problem with the recording. Nor does your response clarify whether there's a problem with the recording or not, only that you didn't say one way or the other. Therefore I believe the rumor continues, until you say for sure whether there is or isn't a problem.

Relax there, Sparky. You came back with an off response to the first user who had commented on a rumor they heard. Then when I point out that it was just a rumor, you responded. I respond back again, and suddenly you're in a little tiff. Smoke a big fatty and keep those fine tapes rolling.

personal suggestion, set your prefs to not get ims from outside your buddy list. If someone wishes to talk to you, they contact you elsewhere, and if you want to you can extend it to AIM on your own volition. Its not worth the hassle to get harassed.

I appologize if I offended you, I just read that somewhere on the bridge i think. The reason why people think of these things is because you are so damn good at getting your stuff out there fast. I guess us people that dont tape really dont have a good understanding of what has to be done to convert a tape and have it spreading by the next day. Good work on the tour and I look forward to your tapes in the future.

everyone has different things that they look for in a recording.

for starters, check out brown's 3/28 and 3/29

i think this all has to do with what kind of tape you are looking for. there are basically 2 types of tapes this dt tour 1) aud tape from seat location 2) aud tape off the monitors. The second resulting in a like sbd sounding tape with minimal crowd which is ideal in the dt setting. the first results in very loud crowd points in most cases. again it comes down to personal preference. i know a lot of us had a hard time making decent sounding tapes from seat locations, a lot of problems with stand having to be at head height and proximity to stacks onstage and how they were setup. a lot of variables were in play on this tour, but all in all i think most tapes sound pretty good, even given the circumstances at some venues.

seriously now. Alphebetical order is to prevent it from being mistaken for a list with the best one on top. I doubt it would be accidental that its entirly in ABC order.

There were many drunk kids around me who were loud during the concert, mostly in between songs when they were screaming for requests. There is also a cell phone that rings a couple of times in the drunk man intro > dancing nancies.

Getting caught? I thought tapers were allowed to tape the shows? Why would anyone have to worry about getting caught? Or are they only allowed to tape from their seats?

The only stealth recording done for the D+T tour was 3/23/03 at West Point. It actually turned out to be a better sounding tape than some of the other shows.

Can anyone please tell me how to turn the d+t 3.29.03 show from a bit torrent file into a mp3 file. I downloaded the Scott tape and I can't turn it into a cd
