So I have my setup all, well, set up. I'm trying to record with CoolEdit. I have done a few little test things. My voice is picked up fine. It is crisp and clear. My guitar, on the other hand, is terrible. It sounds like a distorted guitar (almost). You can't even decipher my guitar. Any ideas?

my computer does that same thing, i am pretty sure its the soundcard/mic that you use. it seems to me that wheneve ri plug my guitar into it, ithe harder i played the more distorted it got, that may also explain why your vocals sound ok, sense you more than likely arent singing with the emphasis of slipknot.
What exactly is the setup? Your guitar might have too much gain, so it's distorting, even though it isn't overpowering the line in.
You might want to try recording just voice, or just guitar, and see what kind of results you get with each of the seperate inputs. Often when you use a Y cable to connect two different inputs their gains are simply too different to work without modification.

Lakewood D1 with Fishman pickup -> Audiobuddy preamp -> laptop
I have my guitar plugged into slot 1 and my Shure SM58 mic into the XLR slot 2 in the back.
I have recorded my voice for 30 seconds by itself and it sounds perfectly fine.
When i try to do just guitar (or guitar with voice) the sound gets all fucked up. Bad bad distortion.

i have played with the 'gain' on the audiobuddy. it has no effect other than loudness.
It sounds like the Line-In can't handle the power being thrown at it. Have you tried plugging the guitar into the 1/8" mic jack that matches the line-in? Also, there should be an option in your audio options to accept a higher input power- it's under Mic options, I believe...

I'm not sure what you mean by that...but I think that is what I have been doing.

You wouldnt happen to know where it is in XP would you. I'm searching for it right now.

Start->Accessories->Entertainment->Volume Control
Then click the Advanced Button under that. I think that's what Rob is talking about.

Okay. Found it. So I should put the "line" volume all the way up?
There should be a seperate control for it, under "Advanced," rather than just the standard slider control.

my "advanced controls' is an option under "options" but it doesn't allow me to select it.
under the volume control I can see and change volume for the following:
vol. control, wave midi, cd audio, line

This is why I can't select the 'advanced':
On the Options menu, if the Advanced Controls command is unavailable, your sound driver does not support separate bass and treble settings.
