my opinion...
newsgroups > HTTP > file sharing (DC/Bit Torrent/etc) > FTP
newsgroups are the best because one person uploads it to the server and anybody with access to it can download at their full speed they recieve from their ISP all the times nomatter how many people are getting the files at the same time.
HTTP is seconds because while it's public like newsgroups, bandwidth isn't as pleantyful. You are limited by the amount the server has oppose to limited by the amount of bandwidth your ISP gives you. The more people downloading the slower it gets.
File Sharing, while it's good because it's public bandwidth is the limiting factor. At times you might have a person sharing that's on a cable modem, thus speeds are slow. Not an unlimited amount of can download at a given time depending on the implementation. DC you have slots, Bit Torrent is unlimited bascially.
FTP is last because it's private for the most part. They are hard to get into beacuse of limited connections at one time. Speeds are sometimes fast and somties slow, it's a toss up. You usually don't take advantage of ones full download speed.

lately, just bit torrent. The ants server has been hella slow for me, and I've been getting most shows with bit torrent in under 2 or 3 hours. I still use ants occasionally though.

Newsgroup --> Direct Connect --> AM.org
If I can't find it on those 3 sources, I'll find FTP and at a last resort B+P.
