I'd like to become a part of a dying breed. I just finished setting up my FTP server. Ants has goals that you have to accomplish before you can become an "Ant Server." Such as having 10 shows available for download (I almost have the whole D+T 2003 tour), and being up for 14 days. Now for my question, if I wanted to limit the time that an account (such as fast) can be logged in, is that acceptable? I was thinking about denying access during the hours of 6 pm to 12 am EST. That's the time that my wife and I would be on the internet, and we (well, she) don't want to lose the bandwidth. How frowned upon is this?

what kind of a connection are you on and how fast can u upload?

i don't seem to have any trouble browsing the net while serving. if thats all your doing is browsing and email you should be ok. give it a trial run when people are downloading.

actually i do a lot of stuff while serving. i am usually on the net, downloading via ftp and newsgroups and on trillian (chat). the only thing that really hinders the server uploads is the newsgroups, but thats taking bandwidth away from the server. i do notice when i am online that my upload speed drops for a second when a page is loading.

I've got a cable modem through Adelphia (east coast cable provider). At times when a friend of mine was downloading from the server at the same time I was, we were both getting speeds of about 15-17 KB/s.

i still would suggest surfing the web while someone is downloading and see if there is a lag.

how were you downloading from your own server? you have 2 pcs on a LAN? or were you at a different locale?

cause i have my server on my LAN and get can speeds 1500+ kbps when i download.

Server's at home, I was at work, friend was at his house. I have the FTP folder shared out on my network on the domain controller, so I can just copy and paste from it when I'm at home, so I get 100 MB\s.
