I want to spend about $400 - $500 on a acoustic/electirc guitar. I know it should be about the sound, not the name... but what do you reccommend I check out?

Try as many different brands as you can but in that price range, I've always been a fan of Alvarez. I would def. recommend checking them out. I think they're one of the best values for that kind of money. Good luck!

I am a definate fan of the Takamine lines...I ended up with a G-Series Takamine for around 399.

Thanks for the advice. I actually found a Dean today that I really like. I'm not sure what they're like in general, but this particular one sounds and feels great.
Well, someone is going to say it, might as well be me. Try out seagulls, they are nice guitars and will fall in your price range.
