Is it common for alcohol to affect one's throat when singing? Or is it just unique to me?
It sucks because a couple drinks really take the edge off when playing out.. but as a result, my throat doesn't feel 100% when singing. It's a no win situation.

Drinking drys you out. I always bring water when I play at bars and try to take a swig between songs.
This is a good thing to some people. Playing in a dry, smoke filled room does change how you sing, especially if you've been drinking.
Drinking helps to curb the nerves and you don't feel any pain if you have a sore throat. But it does dry you out and change your sound a little.

I think drinking wine is the way to go if you are going to be drinking and singing. My friend's singing coach told him if he needs to, drink red wine and smoke hawaiin (if possible). I know Eddie Vedder has a bottle of red wine every night on stage with him. Not only that, but wine gives you such a cool buzz! Hope this helps.
