Are you downloading via the Downloads area of AM.org? Or are you using the AntsDownloader? I'm guessing the former...but I'm not sure. How aboot some more info?

Have you read the Frequently Asked Questions/How To page?

http://www.antsmarching.org/music/downloads/antsdownloader.php

its the reason why you can't get in probably.

joe - for the ants downloader you need to add an agreement statement saying they have read the FAQ and such :D

or on the 1st run of the downloader have the config file open if its empty.

good idea.

also, the download should not start if the destination folder has not been set.

i would also like to see it create a log file that would record errors. might help with troubleshooting.

also good ideas. i don't use the downloader, but i'm guessing there aren't that many configs. why not have them display in the GUI? or at least have it be a menu option to open a popup window. still have them store in the config file

the config is just your username, password, and download folder.

it would be great if you could enter your O/S info in the config file. that, along with a log file would REALLY help those who are having trouble. they could post the error log and we would already know what OS they are running and what error messages they are getting.

thought there were retries and stuff like that? i think it would still be easier if it was right in the GUI

yup. i don't even think you have to enter your OS info in the config. I know with VB i can get that info in the program itself and display it.
have the error log look like:
OS/Date/FileDownloading/ErrorMessage

i wish i could see the code ...

yes, the config does have retries, but there is a defualt setting for those already, so you do HAVE to change them.

is the downloader written in VB?

I'm thinking he did it in C#. I'm pretty sure it wasn't VB .NET.

Having config access in the app would take away all of the mystery. Can't completely spoonfeed people.

even if we did spoon feed people, we would still get the same questions.

i have pm'd shawn and i have also asked previously for the code to be open source or to at least see the code.

and to follow up. i have pm'd shawn (only once though) and asked to see the code in other threads. i'm assuming there is some reason why i am not allowed to see it.

Probably a good one. :D

Shawn has been known to graciously show some of us source code in the past.

i guess my point was there isn't really an easy way to port the code to mac & *nix if ya can't see the original

There has been talk (if not action) with this already. Unfortunately I'm on the lesser informed side though.

if you've installed the ants downloader recently, then go into your start menu, programs, Antsmarching.org, Ants downloader config.

So, in reading all that information, this will be a little harder then I thought to fix. In sorta involves being computer literate. I will wait to see if there are people that are having more luck - 1 out of 6 is not that great of odds! Thank you for your help! Amanda

if it works most times and the error only happened once, then just leave it be. it might have been a random error.

yes it most definatly does. and to that point i say leave it alone if ya don't know what your doing or how to fix it when it breaks.
