Cry Freedom is easy if you can pin down the strums during the verse...and it's easy to sing over, too.

the only (and I mean only. stone is a breeze, tripping billies, warehouse is a blast.. satellite was one of the first songs i learned etc) dave song I cant play/sing is proudest monkey. pretty easy to play.. but I must not be playing it right (strum wise that is.. )

Many easy songs.. my first one was Christmas Song. If you mean just play, you can't go wrong with Proudest Monkey or Blue Water (two chords on BW!) . Some intermediates.. Grey Street, Crash, #41 isn't so bad, neither is Halloween if you can get it to sound good.

Lie in Our Graves...easier than Proudest Monkey? Do you realize Proudest Monkey is like 4 or so notes? LIOG isn't exactly the Stone but its sure as hell not the easiest.

Yeah I'm a fairly new player, and I've got Proudest Monkey, Bug Eyed Fish, Route 2 Typical Situation, and most of Ants pretty much down.
But I make an attempt at The Stone, and I just sound like an idiot

i find the stone is real easy without a pick, i just can move a lot faster, doesn't sound as full but i'll use one now and then

okay, maybe i'm also full of BS!!! i love watching dave's hands playing that song -- amazing!
i don't play the guitar, and i can play typical situation -- so that's just a little insite into what is really the easiest song!

I don't see how anyone can argue with Proudest Monkey. You don't move your hand position at all the whole song and you just have to lift your fingers twice. Ridiculously easy, typical situation's intro is easy but the rest of the song doesn't make it a contender for easiest song to play, and whoever is suggesting lie in our graves or crash and such are crazy, since anyone who has never played guitar in their life can learn monkey the first day no problem, and on their own, which i can't say the same for many other songs.

For those who have never touched a guitar: Proudest Monkey
For those who know basic major/minor/power chords: Big Eyed Fish, Watchtower
For those who have developed a decent sense of rhythm and timing: Crash, Typical, Nancies

Proudest Monkey and Blue Water are the only ones I would consider anywhere close to easy
the rest are easy once you get them or are pretty decent on the guitar. Also people find different songs easier, I could sorta play ants within a month of me starting, but a year later and I still can't get it to sound good. Lie in Our Graves took about an hour for me to learn but I still can't play crash(haven't had too much desire to learn it but have tried)
so I say PM and BW are the only actually easy songs, also if you don't follow dave's fingerings a lot of his other songs can be simplified.

Good explanation. A good sense of rhythm is a must for Crash. Although I do'nt think Nancies belongs on that list. To get it to sound right you really need to work on muting, and that's not a given to go along with a good sense of rhythm.

Yea, you're right. I just looked at my post, and I was like....."Yea rhythm won't get you anywhere with Nancies :) "
It's tougher to get it down the RIGHT way.

i think spoon is fairly easy because of the basic chords
but my first song was watchtower fairly easy just get practice switching chords

not trying to offend or make fun of you but why the hell do people keep referring to Watchtower as the easiest "dave song" to play. Dave didn't come close to writing it or even come up with the rythm for the way he plays it

yes, most of us know that. it could have slipped his mind, who knows. although, honestly, i've heard dmb do it so many times, when someone mentions watchtower i mention dmb, then catch myself. just depends on how much you think about it.

Why do ever-loyal Dylan fans get offended each time someone mentions Dave and Watchtower?
We know its not Dave's song. We know he didn't write it. But its a DMB board, what do you expect. Dylan already has all the respect in the world; he's considered an influence on everyone, what more do you want. And quite honestly, I think DMB's version of the song was an improvement on U2's, Hendrix's, and even Dylan's.
All these people mean when they say easiest "Dave song" is the easiest song that is PERFORMED by DMB. They just want to know an easy song so they can learn it and play it.

There are ways to play Dave songs easier than he does, but you'll be taking away some of the nuances that make it great.
Take "Say Goodbye." Intro is Amaj (sus4 and add5 if you want to play around with it), Emaj, Dmaj. Chorus is Bmin, Emaj, Amaj, Dmaj. There's the girth of the song, in terms of the chords we all learn as beginners.
Take the intro and majority of "Crash." The high drones are an E and a B, so we can simplify this to the top strings of the guitar. After that, the hardest part is the bassline. This my be a fingerpicker's way to play it, but you can do it with a pick, too.

Now, I know this isn't the way Dave plays. But hell, we're all here to spread the music. Making it a little easier for some never did hurt anybody.

yep, what he said, although crash could be difficult for beginners cuz of the rhythm, and after playing for 2 1/2 years my hand still hurts like a bitch after playing crash all the way through! is there any hand excercise or something i could do to get rid of this?

I very much so disagree with Crash. That was the first song I "learned" but i still dont really have the rhythm down right. Sure pretty much any one can strum the chords to the song, but to get the rhythm down every time takes a little more skill.

Some good ones posted guys. I don't think I saw anyone mention DDtW, though. That's a really easy song and fun to play. Also, For the Beauty of Wynona is pretty easy as well (yes...I KNOW it's a cover...but Watchtower was mentioned). Cheers!

Strangely enough, that was actually the first song I learned, too, and I picked up on the rhythm just fine. But I think more people are like you than are like me (rhythm wise)
