i am a beginner and i am looking for my first acoustic. after researching, looking around, and talking to friends i have come up with 2 guitars that sound the best. i am thinking of going with either an alvarez or a seagull. if anyone knows if either these 2 are good for beginners, or any other ones that may be better please let me know. i was also wondering what kind of wood & finish are best and if i should get one w/ or w/out gloss. i am not sure on some of the minor differences with guitars. i was also wondering if it would be safe to order online with a money back guarantee. i know it would be better if i could see it first, but there is a huge difference in price and i dont have much money right now. any advice would be appreciated.

um I haven't played a seagull before but from the word around here a lot of people like them. If you don't have enough money for the ones in the store but have access to them in the store then you should play them both. When your a beginner its not THAT important to worry about sound. just find one that is comfortable and that you like... don't get something if you dont like it just because someone told you to. hope this helps

yeah seagulls are good guitars. they've got some goofy looking headstocks, but they're probably one of the best-balanced, fullest-sounding guitars for that price. alvarez's look alright, but i think they're sound is sort of enclosed. go for the seagull, it'll give you a few good years.

i like my alverez. i have been playing guitar for a very long time and i find it does everything i need.

by the way, when you ask if it is good for beginners i don't really think that is a relative question. a good guitar is a good guitar, as opposed to say...wakeboards, just for example. some wakeboards are designed for beginners, a certain wakeboard that is extremely good for a professional would not be good at all for a beginner. but with guitars, a good guitar for you is the best guitar you can buy with you price range. i don't know if what i was trying to say came out right, but i think you get the idea.

tacomas are also worth checking out...they look like crap, but the cheapest all-wood guitar you can find new...not sure of your price range tho...

thank you all for the help...... my price range is around 200 so its not like i will be going out and buying a martin. the seagull's sound good to me, i just need to find a place that sells them. so, does everyone think it would be better to pay the extra to a guitar shop rather then purchashing one online?

i think if you're going entry level you can buy online safely. i would never buy a high end guitar without playing it tho...

I just got a Alvarez RD20SC I paid $260 w/ a special discount from my aunt who works in a Music shop, but you should be able to get the Alvarez RD20S for $200 or a little bit more. I have done a lot of searching on about 5 different message boards and nobody has told me that Alvarez is flat out a POS.

You want to try to get a solid top which the RD20S is and the Seagull S6. I wouldn't let the salesperson push you into a laminate. The first guitar shop I went to was telling me it would make a difference to a beginner and it would be stronger. I was like hey I am not a 6 y/o I am not going to be jumping up and down on it. So that was his reasoning for selling me an overpriced laminate top "Beginner" guitar.

Just shop around, I think Alvarez is a good choice for a first timer, I love mine and have only been playing for 2 weeks.

Enjoy and good luck!

PS: Just from a lot of the research, buying online could be risky, so becareful.

I didn't like my Seagull at all. Probably a fluke thing, but it just didn't feel right after a while. Now my Taylor--that feels right :)

i purchased one today. i only had around 200$ to spend and i wanted a case too so i decided on the alvarez rd 8. i wanted to go with the rd20s but it would have cost me an extra 100$ or so. i guess ill look at it as a temporary solution. is having a lam top really that big of a difference? if it is, maybe ill think about returning it. i just liked the whole deal with the case and everything and the guitar actually sounded good to me. i am not really a good judge though. hopefully i made a good decison???
