Welcome to the Best Recording Opinion/Feedback/Source File Thread of DMB Summer 2003.
This thread can be used to post comments about recordings. Also use this thread to find out when a recording has become available. So use this thread to your advantage. Get other opinions, list your opinions, and just keep track on the current recordings being spread.
Listed below is each of the played tour dates with taper info (purposely in alphabetic order). If you click the tapers name the source file for that recording will come up for you to view.
Look through the thread for opinions on recordings. Many times Ants will make a list of their choices.
If you happen to have a recording not listed here please at least send me the source file so that i can host it for others to view. My AIM screen name is JoeMal1121 and my email is Joe@antsmarching.org.
NOTE: It is very important that the tapers want you to know that this is nothing offical. Everyones opinions will differ. While I base all opinions on a computer and home stereo test of clarity, range, balance, vocals, crowd noise, and many other things these are still accurate notations. If you have any questions be sure to ask.
These are based on opinions and feedback. Every one of these recordings are concidered good and each taper puts a great amount of work into them. If you can, download them all and listen for yourself. That's what I would recommend.

Joe, is it possible that along with the txt files you can put MD5s as well? We're getting these shows 99% of the time straight from the taper, so its not like the MD5s are going to be bad ones. This way theres no confusion between the time the show starts to circulate and the time it gets to db.etree.org

Here's the deal. I won't do it all myself because it requires making a folder for ever single source to put the md5s in (md5s for the same show are named the same thing). Also in many cases I only have access to the source file or tapers only send me the source file.
Now. What I can offer is the AM.org Tour Center has added the ability to store md5s for each source listed. The thing is, right now we are only storing the ones we have on the HTTP. Now I can talk with Matt and see what he thinks about adding md5s for all the sources. But that's pretty much how it stands.

Not all tapers track the shows for 80min disks. Some track to 72min disks. It also appears that Drews might have ended his recording almost immediately after ants while the others give a little settle time (but thats only a pre-hearing observation)

I ended ants about 10 seconds after dave said see you all later or whatever he said, and due to the disc flips some of the encore break is missing, but none of the actual show or dave speak, id much rather have a 2 disc show than 3 if nothing is taken out that matters all that much, but thats just my opinion

There is supposidly a slight skip in the recording. I don't have much details at this time about it. But as for 6-17 watch for Travitz and Sam's to come out. They should be good also.

Phipps - Good call. As I was listening to the show, and especially towards the end, it definitely sounded like more of an echo than a skip. In addition, Boyd seemed to be out of tune for a few songs on that night. However, as I was listening, it almost sounded like there may have been a problem with his mic, rather than being out of tune. It almost sounds like there are effects being added to it.. Anyway, I'm rambling. Just wanted to concur with Phipps on the echo.

this is a huge point right here. not everyone gets there sources out the next day (understandably so, 2 week rule always applies), so personally i would wait a week or 2 even and see what other sources come out. then download a track or 2 from each and decide for yourself, also read that thread i pointed to to see what others think. or if ya got room download as many as you can and only save 1 or 2 and burn the one you like the best to audio.

i figured you did, but its easier to have feedback in 1 thread.
i kinda like culbreth, but have only listened to culbreth & weaver. i'd say give lincoln's or phipps a listen. it all depends on your ears.
the best way:
download a track from each and compare yourself.

Preliminary observations (this will probably change a bunch, though):
6/17: Sarnovsky (over Weaver and Culbreth)
6/18: Drews (over Culbreth and Phipps)
6/20: Jones & Bastable too close to call
6/21: Ice (over Naylor, Brown and Dahl)

I try to stay with recordings, though I'm not the one to care.
Pull :: Matrix
They both are alternatives for commonly used words.
They both have little to no meaning behind them.
They both are widely used.
When either is said everyone still knows what was meant.
How are they different? No on flips out about the word "Matrix".
I try to make people happy. I don't know why. But I do. So I try to use "recording".
Thanks for the headsup greppson. :)

I agree with Ccronks on the 6/17 and 6/18 shows. However, for 6/18, ive only listened to drews, culbreth and formwalt/stockdale, drews being the best IMO.
I prefer Bastable over jones. In the process of downloading the Ice and Brown 6/21 shows.

Brown's was the first one I downloaded and I don't think I will bother checking any of the other recording's out. This is definitely a solid recording. Not to degrade the other recordings, just don't have the time to check them out. :)

I am listening to Eric Phipps source from 6-24-03. Does any one know where his stand was? I was at both Cincinnati shows and i noticed that most of mic stands were pretty low, (eg. security at riverbend sucks) Overall I have to say that Eric's pull is pretty decent. The crowd was loud in general, and Riverbend's accoustics aren't the best. So working with what he had I have to give him a thumbs up.

Security made everyone lower thier stands to head level after some problems. I think that was just for night one though.

I have listened to Phipp's 6-23 and 6-24 recordings and they sound pretty good. The only other recording I have seen for that stand is Culbreth's 6-24. After an initial listen, I am going to say that Phipp's 6-24 is the better of the 2.

this song
> Indicates a segue into the next song
Notes:
This recording was not intended to be released in its current form. The mics that made this source were but one pair in a matrix, and run extraordinarily wide to facilitate a wider stereo image in a complete "dpa_mix" source, a la 06/20/03, but thanks to some idiots sitting in Row G, Seats 11/12, the laptop that was recording the four tracks to be mixed was fried by the half-cup of beer spilled from the hands of some moronic idiot who seems to believe she can't enjoy a "Dave" show without being incoherently drunk. So I'd like to send out a heartfelt "Fuck You" to the two lushes sitting behind me for the trouble they've caused.

hey joe... anyway we could link the txt files into tour central? i mean, it would be nice to be able to check out the text files before committing to download an ants file... maybe where is says "download ----------------'s tape"
maybe that is already happening and i am stupid, but just an idea.
if you click the "view all sources for this show" link, you can see the text file for each recording.
the link is just above the download .ants file link

dude, who pissed in your wheaties this morning?
there's a difference between someone bitching and someone just being sad that their first show may be the only one of that tour to not be released.
it's a perfectly natural reaction. you have to admit it very strange for a show to go this long without being released. i'm not saying the tapers are horrible people because of it...just that it's very unusual.
if someone tapes for themselves and has no intention of ever releasing them...then whatever. but if they taped them with the intention of releasing them, and then decide not to because they're mad about people wanting to hear the shows...that's just being a dick.

1st off, remember that ALL tapers tape for themselves... why do you think that as soon as the show is over and you go and ask for an email address or web site where you can download the show the second you get home, the tapers give you the look of FUCK OFF?
Most tapers are nice enough to share the shows right away amongst the "taper's FTP servers" and then from there they get out via the newsgroups and other places.
But, if a taper decides to not release the show, that does become an unusual sitsation, but you will have no choice but to LIVE WITH IT.
When the 2 tapers who taped these 2 shows get email after email about where is the show and then it is being released.... it gets freaking annoying.
Send me your email address, and I will email you every 2 hours asking you the same thing .... and I will also send the same email from 50 different email addresses.... see how you like being annoyed.
The, next time you are at a show, go sit by the tapers... trade with someone who is sitting behind the taper, and watch what goes on.
But wait, you wll have to go in as soon as the doors open, then get hasselled by security, then you will have to give up your 2nd row center seats to sit on the outer aisle to make that tape....
So, while sitting behind a taper, keep track of every drunk bozo who wants a copy before the show, who bugs you during the how and then after... all while spening 3+ hours watching levels on a the deck in the dark, and missing 2/3s of the show because you are watching the equipment and making sure drunk fuckers are not hitting the stand or beach balls are hit into them
And there is so more, but this is annoying me....
So, bottom line, Toronto and Montreal 2003 may go down as the only 2 shows on the summer tour that did not get taped.... or did they?

well, i'm not a taper, but i get the idea that most tape with the intention of sharing. i would assume they are proud of the work they put into it, and enjoy sharing it with others. the reason they get pissed off at people bugging them at shows (and again, this is speculation) would be because they can't be expected to have a tape converted and released overnight, and it's got to be annoying as all hell to have people expect that of you. that much i can understand.
as for all the work that goes into taping...i get all that. and i certainly don't take any of it for granted.
my main point was simply that you're being a dick. period. nobody here deserved your little tirade.

greg can do whatever he damn well pleases with the show. if you have a problem with that, then go buy some gear and tape it yourself next time they come near you. it's that simple
until then, you have absolutely no right to bitch and moan that someone else isn't living by your schedule and complying with your every wish. he's not obligated to share a thing with anyone

Oh man, this sucks. Really, that's all I can say. I've been waiting patiently for 3 and a half months for the Canadian shows and now I'm hearing that they're never coming out? That REALLY SUCKS! Whoever this Matt guy is, I don't know much about you, but fuck man, if you are the reason these shows don't come out, then the fuck with you.
Greg, I hear you taped the shows, and I can understand that you don't like being hassled or underappreciated, but don't let these idiots ruin it for everyone. I know you don't like to be bugged, and this is no excuse, but most people have just been asking about these because they took a long time. Hold back any show for more than 2 weeks, and people will ask, and hopefully they'll be polite about it. I don't think people were violating the 2 week rule, and I don't see why those of us who were patient have to suffer. Honestly, let's hold back a NYC recording for 3 months and see what happens, and then punish all those people.
I know you, like many tapers, get annoyed by this, but understand that most of us appreciate what you do and respect that you have your own lives and schedules. I hope that you can look past the idiots and do this service for the trading community. Otherwise, I'm just going to have to hope that the DMB actually does start releasing official copies of every show like the rumour suggests and that they go back to Sept. 03.
damn. i guess i shouldn't have said anything about it not being out.

It does suck that Matt may have ruined it for everyone. And it is not that I feel ""underappreciated"" or pissed off that I spend all this money to go to shows and tape.
The choice I made back in 1986 (the 1st time I taped a show) was to spend money on recodrinf gear, tickets, travel, gas, tolls, hotels, etc. was my choice, and that is not my need to hold back these shows.
It comes down to politics. The DMB fan base that is on line today has some sort of an instant gratification need, and that stems from the work of the WWW and how instantly we can obtain information, new and the like.
But when it comes to taping, it is not that instant. May be one day the band will sell copies of the show just after it, and they have the means, money and people to do this. Personally, I cant pull that off.
After Montreal I drove home 5 hours, to sleep about 5 hours to drive 3 hours up to Toronto.... as did the other taper who I went with... and then we both had to go back to work, and then pile back inthe car for 5.5 more hours (a couple of days later) to Camden... and so on.
I am not looking for simpathy, just some sort fo an understanding that "show recordings" are not a god given requirement and fans do deserve the recordings, but when they get out there and at the tapers timing, not the fan base timing
Feel free to comment with "educated" comments, not banter and whine.
Greg
PS - I will not provide cheese for that whine.

Greg, I can understand that you are not happy about the communities reaction and rightfully so....
My thoughts are that if you released these sometime in the future, the whole issue would come to a resolve. You would get no more emails or retards like the people on these boards on your ass to release these shows. But that decision is up to you man....
Please take this as a "educated comment", I am not trying to be an ass here...

Hey Greg,
I was at both Toronto and Montreal this year. It was the only shows i attended and i want to hear these tapes as badly as anyone. That being said not having the tapes isn't a very big deal. What you do is up to you. I and many others will get along just fine without the shows.
But if the time and effort was put in by you to tape the shows why not release them. I'm sure there are a lot of jackasses that were unkind to you over this subject, but there are hundreds who have quietly waited and hoped they'd become available.

Greg,
You absolutely have the right to hold onto those recordings and yes, there is a good portion of the online fanbase that is disrespectful. But I believe there is a greater portion that appreciates the hell out of what you and the other tapers do.
Take the D+F recordings for example. The tapers are making the effort to get the tapes out insanely fast and everyone is amazed and extremely grateful.
That being said wether these two recordings are coming out is ultimately up to you. So why would you tease those who have been quietly and respectfully waiting by threating not to spread them because of a select few. Your decision can be made, whichever way that is, and then posted.
Please don't confuse excitement and anticiptation for the recordings as ungratefulness or greediness.

I feel for the people who were at Montreal and won't get to hear it - but they'll live. The behaviour shown by a good portion of the community over ONE show has been pathetic. It's wonderful that shows get out quickly, but when they don't, suddenly we have an angry mob of DMB fans demanding shows.
Like Greg said... go watch what a taper goes through. I sat near several in the summer and helped someone out last night. What they go through is incredible. The guy last night missed most what was actually going on onstage so that other people who didn't get the show could enjoy it too.
For those of you who think I'm ass-kissing, I'm not. I don't need hook-ups or logins or shows. It's more that what's gone on with this whole affair has been pretty disappointing for me as a member of the community.

yes, people expect shows to be up quickly. why? because every show is up quickly. when a show isn't up within two weeks, questions start. does this mean the people asking the questions are ungrateful, greedy or assholes? No, not usually. Of course there's always a couple jerks out there who "expect" tapers to provide shows, but most people asking are just asking because it's unusual.
I personally really want copies of the Canadian shows, but at the same time, I appreciate what the tapers do. I appreciate the fact that their work prevents me from having to buy equipment and tape for myself. I appreciate that I can go watch a show, not have to set up rigs and all that shit, and still go home after and later listen to the show again. I understand that taping is not what they devote their lives to, and I understand some tapes take longer to get out than others. But if the reason that they're not out is because tapers are making a stand against idiots who are unappreciative, I think that sucks. What is this, grade five french class where the whole class gets detention because two kids piss off the teacher? I thought I left that shit behind ten years ago.
To Greg and the rest of the tapers, most of the people who post here and trade in this community have a great deal of respect for what you do. Some people are immature and feel the need to treat you like shit, don't spoil it for the rest of the community just to make a point. If it takes another month or even a year to convert them and spread them, that's fine with me, I'll be happy whenever they surface. Just don't judge the whole trading community, especially the Canadian part of it, based on a few morons.

the point is that the ONLINE fanbase has become much more greedy, mainly due to the fact that shows have been appearing in shorter and shorter amounts of time.
and the online fanbase make up a good postion, but not the largest portion of the fanbase(as far as i can tell).
greg(and other tapers) take THEIR money, THEIR time, THEIR effort to tape. if he or they want to hold on to a recording--it is truly up to them.
in a way, i'm glad these recordings have been held back, to prove how greedy this community is. people on the boards feel they "deserve" a copy of any and every show they were at/want/need, or however else it is termed.
and i think that point has been proven. but, it will constantly be an issue, especially with recordings coming out so fast. i do wonder however if it will be completely null when the official live recordings start, depending on how that is structured.
i respect everything the tapers do, and wish there was some way that i could help or do more for them. recently, i went up to a few tapers at a dave and friends show and just said thanks. i didn't try to give them my email or ask for a recording, i just wanted to show them that there are people out there that truly do appreciate and patiently wait for recordings to surface.
and as i said, the tapers can do whatever they want with their recordings of shows. i come here for the music, i host stuff because i want to spread the enjoyment i get from going to shows. and i know that is the way a lot of tapers are as well--they simply want to spread the enjoyment. sometimes that sharing can come hours after a show, or years down the road. it all depends on when and what is going on in the taper's life. that's what i think a lot of people forget: tapers have lives OUTSIDE of recoridng DMB shows. i look at posts and questions sometimes and i wonder how people can be so dumb.
i wish it was a mandatory requirement for every fan who downloads or trades shows to work with a taper for one show and see and do everything they need to do. the community would be a lot better off, imo, but obviously that is a pretty unreasonable request!:lol
i guess i can't think of another way for people to really understand. i don't tape, but i've worked at a lot of shows(mainly during college) and i've seen the work and effort that goes in JUST at the show alone. and that is where my respect comes from.
tapers: y'all can do whatever you want. you always have and will continue to, but please don't judge the entire online community by the comments or inqusitions of a few. they may truly not understand what goes into planning, taping, and converting a show. yes, i was at montreal and yes i would like to see a recording, but i can wait and i do realize i may never see it.
hell, it took me 5 years just to get my first show.

I agree with this post entirely. I really do appreciate the investment of time and effort tapers make and I realize it takes a lot. I'm willing to wait, and I have waited, but it honestly bothers me to hear that a statement is being made because of the immaturity of others and I will have to suffer for that poor behaviour. I know the tapers are trying to make a point here, and if you want to hold it back for a while longer, that's your business. I also understand that the situation surrounding these shows is a matter of circumstance, since any show that took a few extra days would've been treated this way by both sides, and it's just unfortunate that it's two shows that I went to that are being held back to make a point to the whole community. But I don't like to hear that it will be held back forever because of a few idiots, and honestly, I think the point you all have been trying to make has been made. Everyone waiting for these shows has seen about 10 DMB shows and all 8 DM+F shows come out within hours, plus the release of CP and an album since this show. We've been in the penalty box long enough to pay for the idiocy of some. Nothing is 100%, and you will never get 100% of the trading community to behave. It's the holiday season, maybe it's time, or soon will be time, to end this stand, give those who have been waiting what they have waited for (and no, we don't "deserve" it or have it owed to us, but we all would like it and appreciate it), and at the same time shut up all the morons who are complaining and calling names.

But if the time and effort was put in by you to tape the shows why not release them.
Well, the time and effort put forth are my personal choice, and I tape many bands that don't allow taping, and many bands (other than DMB) that do.
I mostly (now) feel that the DMB communities as a whole do not understand that taping to many Tapers, is an individual 'sport'. In the end, the result is a personal joy and a personal fulfillment, so just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride when you get to the end (as in the show gets released).
In the end, you all can probaly be asured that the shows will get released... even if the other taper is well known for passing out and missing all of Camden2 2003, and became "that guy" that you see at every DMB show

Yes, I agree that there are always a few bad apples.... but i will not judge all DMB fans on this one guy.... I have been going to DMB shows since 1995, so I know better.
...But if the reason that they're not out is because tapers are making a stand against idiots who are unappreciative, I think that sucks. What is this, grade five french class where the whole class gets detention because two kids piss off the teacher? I thought I left that shit behind ten years ago.
May be this is my main gripe..... I just want and need to be appreciated and not have expectation set upon me.... is that unfair?
...especially the Canadian part of it, based on a few morons.
This is not a "south park" thing, I am not Blaming Canada.... just an ironic timing.
I do blame Canada (the OPP) for stealing my Radar Detector, but that is a different issue.
