View Full Version : Things ppl should('ve) know(n) at Darien

A list of stuff i wish i knew and that ppl might like to know in the future. some of this advise can also be applied to other shows as well.

yes, i know this is in the dairen thread but i feel it deserves its own thread. no need pointing this out.

1.) if you have reserved, they will check your ticket for every section you move up to. so in between section 500 and 400 they check your ticket. same for 400 to 300 and so on. when you go into section 100 they give you a non-transferable wristband and they mark your ticket.
2.) the merchandise stand by the park entrance is MUCH less crowded than the Parking lot entrance merchandise stand. go there instead.
3.) just because you get there at 5pm doesnt mean youve missed the soundcheck. thats about what time they did it this year.
4.) the 500's and the back of the 400's are not protected by the shell/tent. if it rains youre as screwed as lawn, except youve got a seat.\
5.) i didnt sit in lawn, but i heard it sucked. puke everywhere, distracting/annoying ppl. expect it. those who sat there can expand on this.
6.) i do know one thing about lawn: you need to get there as soon as the gates open in order to get up by the fence.
7.) bring a lighter. it looks cool.
8.) they dont really pat you down well. you can hide a camera or other "special things" in a folded sweatshirt that you are carrying in your hand. they dont check it. or crotch it.
9.) the fireworks appear on the right side of the venue, at approximately 10pm.
10.) i took the backest back roads you possibly can. we had to ask a lady passing by on her bike directions, but she knew exactly where it was. was of no delay to us. and we had no traffic issues either.
11.) on a similar note, if youre going to take the thruway, get off one exit before 48A (the Darien exit) and then take backroads.
12.) get in your seats for Daves introduction to the opening band. it was hilarious, and awesome. i wish someone taped it.
13.) dance. dont just nod you head. dance like no one cares. y'know why? they dont.
14.) pretty soon after the show ends, the staff will try to kick you out.
15.) if you do bring a sign, dont hold it up for extended periods of time lest you face the wrath of those behind you.
16.) tailgating is fun. if youre gonna be there for awhile bring chairs.
17.) there will be scalpers and scalpees there. i overheard some kid in teh 2nd row say he bought his in the parking lot for $20. dont expect the same deal, but if you wanna sell your ticket, its possible.
18.) bring at least $31 for a shirt and sticker (on this years prices)
19.) the crowd around me wasnt that bad, but i heard horror stories about the crowd. cell phones, spilling beer, talking during Cry Freedom... try to not let it get to you.
20.) for getting out of the parking lot after the show: we hung around until midnight, and were out of the lot by 12:11. after dodging the beer bottles in the lot, we drove up by the Superman ride, where cars were slightly moving. they kept moving, and we were gone.
21.) the ID check station is outside of the entrance. better make sure you go there.
22.) you can get discount park tickets if you wanna get there real early. i think theyre at Tops.
23.) it might be easier to get out of the lot if you go in the Park lot (you have to pay for this).

hope this helps

A couple other things:

1. Get there early. They really don't have enough help or gates to get everyone in the venue in a timely fashion. My girlfriend and I were in line to get in for about 35 min.

2. Try to get to your car ASAP after the show or it may take you three hours to get out, no exaggeration.

3. I felt like the crowd was rowdy, but a good rowdy (singing along, dancing, into the show in general). This is what I thought of the crowds at Ralph Wilson also. Just really into the show.

future reference. it answeres many questions ppl were asking before the show. hopefully if he comes back to darien next year, i'll be able to use this list.

24.) the 100s are 17 rows deep.
25.) seat one is on the right, seat 20 is on the left.

#1. There is/was another ID check immediately upon entering the gates. With a much shorter line.

#2. There is no larger discount at Tops. It's $12 no matter how you slice it when you have a concert ticket.

#3. It is much easier to leave the front lot and they don't always charge you to park there.

#4. I addressed #2 and #3 in the official Darien thread.

They will, too. That's a good idea - and pretty damn accurate. :) It pretty much describes last year's show at Darien.

What time did you try to get in? I went in just before Moe went on and I was able to just walk right in.

One more thing to add:

If you think you will have the need to throw a piss, do not wear sandals to the show. The bathrooms at DL are woefully inadequate. Unless you like 1/4 inch of piss and water all over the floor.

this is true. add a little mud to that combo, and youve got yourself the Darien Bathrooms.

Whenever I go to Darien for a show, I of course go into the park (6 flags) and spend the day there. Every time I see the Dip & Dot's "ice cream of the future" stands. Here's a question...that stuff has been around since I was a kid. When is it going to stop being the "ice cream of the fiture" and start being the "ice cream of the present."

something to add: if you want a really quick exit, and don't mind shelling out a few bucks, the people that live on the road adjacent to the park let you park in their yards. I think I paid $5, and was on the road and out within 30 seconds of starting my car. No lines at all until you hit the main exit crowd later on, which thins out pretty quickly.

I have to stress the fact of PUKE EVERYWHERE. We were on the grass last year and had to REALLY watch where we were stepping, sitting, standing. We had a kid pass out pracically right on top of us, while his annoying friends poked him and laughed at him....I honestly thought he was in a coma.

I have been to Darien the last 2 years and both times I have had experiences with puking, underage drinking (not a big deal) and A LOT of drunk driving....even the cops saw the kids drinking while driving and didn't care! Both times we have spend over 3 hours in the parking lot waiting to get out and then another 3 hour drive home.

However, I wouldn't change a thing....I guess that is what makes the whole experience of a summer DMB concert. I am curious to know if it is like this at all DMB concerts? Anyone know?

cell phone traffic is horrendus. just because you get a signal doesnt mean your call will connect

Just re-iterating the point that if you park in their parking lots you will not get out in a reasonable time, so bring a grill and a case of beer and have a BBQ.
Or bring some burgers and ask the other 500 people with grills to grill them for you.

the woods out behind the parking lot is a good place to smoke b4 the show

dont worry about jellos shots, girls walk around and sell em to ya

you can make a guy w/ out his shirt on and a guitar feel like an ass when he says i know all dmb songs, and you tell him to play heathcliff's haiku warrior or even stone

dont expect extraordinary setlists

dont expect good acoustics

fireworks work well w/ the show......02 they were playing the jam in watchtower when they went off very cool

dave and the guys go to the park early in the day, you can buy pics of them goin on the rollercoasters.......as some people have posted pics of dave and asheley goin on the predator

what's the point of this thread?

its kinda helpful I think, I have never been there (let alone NY state) so its good to know these things. Hopefully I get good seats but I'm not holding my breath, I am actually excited to meet other ANTS, I have always been sitting around people who just sat there and didnt dance or anything, there's lonely ol' me dancing, screaming, and singing all by myself, it'll be good to have others doing the same!

The Sean
02-24-2004, 04:59 PM

whatever you do, don't get lawn seats. you can't hear the show very well because of all the little brats chatting on cellphones and to eachother. this year i'll be getting REAL seats so i won't have to worry about that stuff.

The Sean
04-27-2004, 11:26 PM
this should probably go into the tour forum, but please dont merge it. much is applicable to other venues

I appreciate this thread's candor and accuracy! :D

I would like to re-iterate for those of you coming to Darien for the first time. . .Darien is a deep dark pit of concert despair. . .If you think you've seen extremes in concert experiences think again. . .now you're going to Darien. . . :evil

I do have an important question however guys :) What time do you think the grass lot will open? Last year I was really pissed that we weren't allowed to the grass until like at least 3:30 PM?

THanks

Not sure if I want to chance the guy that lives by Darien or the park lot - for 10 bucks extra if its guaranteed to work then I'm all for it.

yeah it wasn't just gross but FUCKING gross....they had the bathroom NAZI's in there trying to organize it but there were just girls pissing all over hte place, every toilet overflowing, and an inch of piss and other bodily fluids all over the floor. NASTY.

also, if there's still camping open, just camp, so much easier, I did last year, when the show was done just walked through a hole in the fence back into the campground and partied there. :thumbsup
