Bit torrent and direct connect

I recently downloaded DC++ and I could not get it to work. I heard about other programs that allow direct connect but I have no idea how to work those either. I am no computer expert so I am lost. My friend told me about bit torrents and I am lost with those things too. Please help me out if you know about these things. Thanks a lot!
