I am going to start to d/l some shn shows, and had a question about getting started. I was following the steps before I could d/l the shows, and annts told me to d/l the antsdownloader and a .netframework. I was wondering if this was mandatory to d/l a shn show, or if I could get away with it. I have read the FAQ's and all that stuff, but there is no concrete answere to my question. Any help or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you want to download a show from the HTTP server with the antsdownloader, you have to have the antsdownloader and the .NET framework. You can download shns with just a web browser if you want, but the antsdownloader makes things easier.

So I can d/l shn shows from ants and listen to them, burn them, etc... without the antsdownloader? Also, in what way does the antsdownloader make it easier?

That is correct. The downloader allows you to queue up an entire show and walk away while it downloads each individual song. Otherwise you would have to click on each song name to download it.

So would I have to wait till one song d/l before I could d/l another one? or could I just click a few at a time?

Well I d/l the 1.0 .netframework onto my desktop last night, and will d/l the antsdownloader today. So it should work now?
rhuss

you have to actually install the .net framework (run the exe).
downloading does not equal installing.
you can try the 1.0 .Net, if that doesn't please try the 1.1 .Net
btw your previous posts are very contradicting.

Two things...I see that the are contradicting, I deleted both the .netframework and the antsdownloader yesterday, and was going to reinstall them. Now how do I install the .netframework? And eventually, how will I install the antsdownloader? Thanks for the help.

ok. i got confused.
to install .net: run the exe that is downloaded for the .net framework
to install ants downloader: run the exe that is downloaded for the ants downloader
same way you would install any other program.

All I do to d/l a show is double click on it and then save it to a folder right?
XeroMav
07-10-2003, 02:12 AM
Save the .ants file to yer HD, and then double-click (or single click -> Enter...or whatever the heck you like) and it'll open the AntsDownloader. Everything from that point on is automatic. It'll grab the files listed in the .ants file, and when it's done the d/l window will say 'Finished!!!' at the bottom. Then you can do the whole verify/burn/whatever you do w/ shows.
BTW, before you say 'I can't find the SHNs' make sure you check the folder you are saving to. For example, if you set the d/l dir as D:\Downloads\DMB, a 1996 show will be in D:\Downloads\DMB\1996 and so forth. When in doubt, search for .shn...I'm surprised people don't think of that when they complain the files are missing...

I have read the faq's. I tried to open the shn file to listen to it, but I think I need winamp and the plugin to do so, is that right?...I need to d/l winamp and such to listen to the shn show?

double click or drag and drop the shn to winamp.
*note* personally i would download winamp 2.7 or 2.8, not 3.0 and make sure you get the right shn plugin depending on what version of winamp you use
also most of the answers you need to know now are listed in the FAQ's. http://www.antsmarching.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=24 like running md5's, listening to the shn's and what not.
and please don't pm me with the same ? that you posted here in the thread. i get the email that the thread has been posted to, you don't need to pm me too.

you have to be online to download the shn's using the downloader.
you don't have to be online to run the md5's, convert shns to wav, listen the shn's
are you in dialup? you should look into B&P's or trading if you are. thats going to take forever to download shows.

My primary goal was to just d/l a few shows, like I got one last night. So if I can get at least one a night, I will be satisfied. Oh yeah, does antsdownloader tell me how many tracks are on the show I d/l, I saw some posts were kids said they had like 12 out of 13 tracks. I want to make sure I am doing this right so I can help out others and get my shows.
dmbhead41
07-10-2003, 11:29 AM
Ok so to get a show completely done, I have to d/l it from ants, save it to my folder where I keep the files, then once it d/l completely, I drag it over to the winamp, drop it in, let it convert, and then I can play it. To burn a cd of the show, I drag the show to mkwact, wait till it makes the show into an audio file, and then I burn my cd. I hope this is how you do it, because if it is, I have nothing else to ask, and you guys to thank.
dmbhead1: read the FAQ. that will answer your quesions.
rhuss
07-10-2003, 11:39 AM
always always always run the md5's after the download is complete. go into the folder where is was downloaded, you should see at least one .md5 file (if not 1 md5 file per disk), right click on it and select 'verify' from the menu that comes up. this will open mkwact and will start verifying the shn's you have downloaded to make sure they are all ok. if a track fails you need to redownload the track.
winamp does not convert anything. once you get winamp and the shn plugin you can play the shn files.
to burn the audio to a cd, drag and drop the shn files into mkwact and it will convert the shn files to wav files. the open your burning software and burn an audio cd with the wav files. now the shows are split into discs for a reason, meaning all the disc 1 shn files (once converted to wav) will fit on 1 audio disc and all the disc 2 shn files (once converted to wav) will fit on 1 audio disc.
FAQ's:
FAQ #1 ro read (http://www.antsmarching.org/music/downloads/faq.php)

Is the md5 a seperate file when the shn is d/l, or is it part of the shn, and what happens if you don't have one?
The FAQ's do not mention winamp, how to play the shn's once d/l, what to do when the .netframework has errors, and assume's that the reader understand all the technical terms of this type od d/l, I felt better actually talking to someone with experience rather than having a few questions answered.

I clicked on the links and things, and tried to search for those names to d/l the shows on ants, but am still pretty new at this game. I want to d/l the best possible quality of show, any input....

if your talking about from the forums you can;t download shows from there. you can either download via http or antsdownloader from this website. there are other ways of downloading not associated with ants.

I have an issue with the Download page. It could very well be my old computer. I would go in the download page. Hit Login browse down to 2003. Then, when I click the link to one of the shows (example 6-17-03) it would link me back to the years again (1990s-2003). I downloaded the shows the old fashion way (one file at a time) this past Aug 2002. If you can stear me the right direction that would greatly appreciate it. I admire ANTS.Orgs hard work. Thank you!

OK, I know that when you stop d/l a show, and click on it again it will start d/l where you left off, but last night I was d/l a show, about 13% done, and my power went off. It was off for about 15 mins, and when I got back online, I started to d/l the show again. The show started to d/l from the beginning, like it went 0 of 80MB downloaded, without showing that I had any part of that file d/l. Now my question is will the show d/l all over again, or since I had 13% done before, d/l up to 87% and then be complete?

my guess is the initial transfer probably didn't write a full file to your pc and when the power went off the file was not saved.
you'll have to download the full show again 0% - 100%

When you want to know something, you ask it. So here is another one. This last time I d/l the show I was at 80% done, turned off the old aol, and went to the folder to check to see if anything was there. There was a winamp file, I played it and it was only 33 seconds long. I guess this means I have to d/l the whole thing all over, again?

if you stop the downloader before the full show is downloaded 100% you are going to have to restart it. if you stop the download yes a file could only have 33 seconds, it just depends on how much you got downloaded.

So if I go back and start to d/l that same show I was 80% done with, it should start off and say 64MB out of 80MB downloaded and finish off what I started right? because I d/l this show after my computer messed up the first time and it started all over and only played 33 seconds after 80% done, I just thought it would play more I guess.
And if it starts all over again, am I doing something wrong?

i don't know. i can't answer that because i have never used the downloader.
is there only 1 file in the directory?
theres something funny though, cause there is no way the whole show is 80 MB ... hmmmm you might have only downloaded 80% of 1 shn, usually there is 15 - 20 shn's per show. not sure how downloader shows status' and such.

I had no idea there was that many shns per show, I only thought there was on. So are you saying the files should be bigger or smaller than what I was d/l....I think I know what I am missing. See when I clicked on the show to d/l, there is a list of shn files, like I am trying to get the 6-17-03 shn, and then there is a series of shn files, ranging in file size, but there is two groups with numbers 1-8 in the last part of the file name, do I have to d/l all of those files in order to have a complete show?

yup. my guess is your on the 1st shn ... which in most shows is the intro. so you are probably 80% done with the 1st track.
there are multiple shn's per show and multiple discs per show.
for example:
Disc 1
dmb2003-06-17d1t01.shn
dmb2003-06-17d1t02.shn

my honest advice. either go and get a faster internet connection (cable or dsl) or do B&P's and trades. these shows are going to take a long time to download. most shows are around 800MB to over 1 GB.

yup. my guess is your on the 1st shn ... which in most shows is the intro. so you are probably 80% done with the 1st track.
there are multiple shn's per show and multiple discs per show.
for example:
Disc 1
dmb2003-06-17d1t01.shn
dmb2003-06-17d1t02.shn
dmb2003-06-17d1t03.shn ...
Disc 2
dmb2003-06-17d2t01.shn
dmb2003-06-17d2t02.shn

WOW! I had no idea I was only d/l one part of the show, man that sucks. Well if I did continue on with my d/l process, could I d/l the shows out of order, or do they have to be d/l in succession?

That happens sometimes, oh well, there are bigger things in life to worry about than d/l shn's. Thanks for all the help and the patience. Take it easy. Are you going to any DMB shows this summer?
