Which Ultimate Fake book do I want for my Acoustic Guitar playing?
I am wanting to check it out from the library before I buy it and make sure it's what I want but there are C editions, E editions, E flat, and B flat.
Also has anyone ever used this book and if so what do you think of it?
Thanks,
Dennis

I presume your talking about jazz standards real/fake books in which case you want the C edition, as the others will be for wind/brass instruments.
I have copys of the original hand written fake book which is technically illegal due to royalties etc, but its alot more complete than the newer legal versions song wise, although it doesnt have lyrics and some songs have errors.

Well I have heard a lot about it, that's why I was wanting to check it out of the Library but I really have no idea the book is about. Can someone give me an idea what it is?

Its a whole collection of lead sheets for jazz standards transcribed with melody and chords, kinda the bread and butter of jazz. Things like Satin Doll, Summertime, Green Dolphin Street.

So it's only Jazz? I thought there would be some popular 70's music and stuff like that in there. Is there another Fake book that I might be thinking of?

There's a LOT of fake books out there for all kinds of genres - Pop, Rock, '70s, alternative, jazz, blues, etc.
As sunstorm said, you want the C edition since guitar is a C instrument (as are piano and flute).

How do people feel about these books? Do they help you learn cover songs? I am a beginner that has only been playing for about 2 months so I am looking for something that can help me learn a few more songs.
How many other people have these or have used them before?
Thanks for all the help, and links.

Honestly, I really only use them for chords & lyrics, for the most part. Because of that, I'll usually just go online and download the chords/tabs from OLGA and cut-n-paste the lyrics on to the page as well... Saves me some money, gets me exactly the songs I want. Plus, I have my 'fake book' saved as a PDF & Word file so I can always add to it or make changes.

With so much info on the internet, they're not really necessary. I made up my own from all the tabs I had printed as I was learning because I couldn't remember all songs I wanted to play.

What is a good site to look for Chords of songs? I am having a tough time with the tab thing, I don't understand how people say it's easier to read. I can't figure out how many times to play or how fast, whether it's an upstroke or downstroke?
Am I perhaps doing something totally wrong w/ tabs or what?

Yeah, I made my own "ref" book, which kinda doubles as a fake book, but is just a binder with printed tabs or charts I think are the closest to correct. If I catch something that's wrong or sketchy before I print it, I'll change up what I think sounds closer. A very personalized fake book is the cheaper way to go.:D
