View Full Version : just got a drum set
I just bought a drum set. Its a pearl, i think they call it the expert something edition. I have never played or don't know anybody that plays. I want to learn really bad and was wondering what route I should take, should i find someone who gives lessons or buy a instructional video. anything info would be very cool.

Pearl Exports, that's what you've got.

Find someone to give you lessons.
Most instructional videos I've seen are a little more advanced. Lessons are your best bet since that can help you from picking up bad habits in your technique.

I know this is a stuppid remark, but you really have to find a good teacher. Don't get stuck with someone that'll only delay your learning is what I meant. It happens often

No matter what, take things slow in the beginning. If you go at them too fast, you'll frustrate easily and then it won't be any fun anymore. Start with building your coordination - it's harder than you think sometimes.
4/4:
Bass on 1 and 3
Snare on 2 and 4
Closed hat taps on 1 2 3 4
Experiment with that, it's a very basic pattern. Try getting the hats in eighth notes instead of just quavers, then take away the downbeats and hit the hats on the offbeats, etc. A pattern like this will build a sort of mental pattern that you can always use to find the "1" of every measure.
That way, you'll go in for your first lesson a little more prepared and may have more questions for your teacher.
Good luck and have fun.
cool, i will try that. So how should i find a good teacher? just get lucky i guess?

Look in the phone book and see if there is a drum specialty shop somewhere around. Give them a call or go in and ask for a recommendation. They should be happy to help you.
Small music shops can work too. Most of them these days are offering good lessons.
ok, then thats what i will do. thanks a bunch
