In attempting a practice method for my mandolin, I started playing DMB and Pearl Jam songs on it. Seems to be helping.

On the off chance anyone has a mando too:

Heres Satellite worked out for Banjo. As for the chords I had to fudge a little bit and I haven't been able to work out a good picking pattern for them (I may just do the clawhammer thing). But anyway, here's the notes:

Awesome, I've been looking for an excuse to get a mandolin for myself for Christmas. Guess I have one now. Matt do you play any violin? Or is it all mando for you.

Joel

Played violin for some years a long time ago. Still have it, break it out occasionally. My bowing is what's regressed the most. Pretty sad state of affairs so I don't play it if there is any living creature within squealing distance.

I play my old violin etudes and solos on the mandolin now. Have a mandola (tuned like a viola CGDA, a fifth lower than mandolin) too, which is very cool. Play some Nickel Creek on it because Thile's voice is too high for me to sing with.

Very, very nice indeed. Huge fan of Nickel Creek here. First fan I've met on this forum actually.

Im assuming a mandola is sort of like the viola of violins, or baritone guitars of guitars? Sounds pretty cool. If you have any of the tabs for Nickel Creek, that'd be amazing.

Bingo on the Mandola = to Viola. There's also a mandocello which is the cello equivalent (1 octave below viola). Apparently mandobasses too. Turn of the century there were all these mandolin orchestras with all the string equivalents.

I saw Nickel Creek two weeks ago. Awesome show. They did some some great covers. Nice Dream by Radiohead and a Toxic (Britney) which was hilarious.

Check out Mike Marshall and David Grisman too if you like the mandolin. Jethro Burns has a jazz standards album that's pretty cool as well.

Show 287, you can watch a great vid of Marshall and Thile.

Going to California too. There's a little mandolin riff in the middle that I always thought sounded like the harmonics intro to the Lighthouse Tale (Nickel Creek) and would make an interesting segueway point

No no, I was aware of that. I was asking if a mandola was like a viola. I can see the confusion though, I really didnt word that question too well.

Hot Buttered Rum is so sick. I love those guys. Their mandolin/violin work trumps almost all of the newgrass bands out there today, well except the King of Newgrass, ole Sammy.

Also, there are a million accurate Nickel Creek Mandolin tabs on Countrytabs.com

you have to register but its worth it

e---------------
B---------------
G---------------
D---------------
A----------6--4-
E--4--4---------

Just look up the notes on this system

E
--
4-1.1 Being the G string (i know people say its the 4 string but i call it one) first fret

A
--
4-1.6 again 1.6=frist G string aka lowest string sixth fret
6-2.1 = 2 string D second lowest 1 fret.

thus making proudest monkey on mando

E-------------
A-------------
D-------1-----
G-1--1-----6--

anyways hope it helps someone, it just a fun little way to quickly transpose things..

enjoy!

Haven't been on this board in a long time, hows everyone's Mandolin-ing agoing?

Mines going great, just played a bluegrass/folk gig with some buddies of mine, got to perform with the mandolin for the first time ever, lots of fun but killer on the fingers (as opposed to the violin).

If anyone is interested in some great mandolin playing you can't go any better than David Grisman, I STRONGLY suggest checking out Shady Grove and Grateful Dawg, two albums where Grisman plays with Jerry Garcia (they were long time friends).

On an interesting sidenote I'm having a violin of mine restored by the man who makes Grisman's mandolins and I can honestly admit this guy is a genius. Knows EVERYTHING there is to know about string instruments and music in general.

Anyways, hope to get more interest in this thread going :D
