It's a Martin, but shop around on that model number some... it'll probably be over $500 (that's the lowest I've ever seena Martin for). With Martins, you pay for a name more than an intrument.
Pick your price range, go into the acoustic room, play what you think you can afford, and whatever feels good and sounds good is your guitar.
I wouldn't suggest mail-order.

Well i've been playing almost a year and i still have my beater Gremlin that my sister gave me cause she didn't want it...it cost like $75 (i can't wait to get my new tak)...anyway...i'd recommend the jasmine by takamine, i think its around $120 or so...that was my friends first guitar so i played that a little when i was first starting out...i thinks its a great beginner guitar...

I honetly don't think Martin relies on its name...........Taylor...Fender....Gibson.......... they all rely on their name more..............Martin makes a great guitar for the price....

Yeah, Martin makes a good guitar. I don't think they rely on their name.
HOWEVER - You can sometimes find a guitar for a lot less money that sounds just as good (or even better) that isn't a Martin. That is all a matter of opinion and willingness to shop around.

One thing you can try is to go to the local shop and take a look at a guitar that cost 1000's, play it and get a feel for it, check the strings, thickness of the neck and so on, then check out the lower priced guitars and see which one feels and has similar characteristics, you should be able to find a lower priced guitar that feels somewhat like the more expensive ones.

I had a classic Fender guitar and just sold it to buy an Acoustic Fender, it came with a DVD, pick, tuner, string thing and strings. Nice package if you are just getting back into it again like myself. It's a nice guitar as well...$250 for the entire package, beats buying a Takamine for the same amount when all you get is a guitar. Fender is a great product.

I think buying a new one may not be the best way to go for a few reasons. One people sell old ones cheap. I have a gibson acoustic from the late 60's that was my dads. He never played it so its in great condition, but if I hadnt came alone and played he would have sold it in a garage sale. Second reason is that old guitars wood is older. Older wood instruments for the most part sound better. Get better over time. Third reason, unless its like a Martin, Taylor or Gibson there is a good chance youre gonna get a mass produced piece of shit. Seems like the companies paid more attention to detail with the old ones. More sturdy, more complex, better sounding, all types of stuff like that. Finally, and this is kinda a crappy reason, but not a lot of people have old ones that they play with. Kids sure dont have old ones. They arent cool. But if a real guitar player sees it theyll think its real cool.
