I'm on a winXP Pro machine behind an MS router (NAT). I can't connect to any of the FTP servers listed in the corresponding section on the site here. I can connect to numerous FTP servers around the net (netscape, my work, a friends...), but none of the servers listed here. Here's what happens:
C:\>ftp sully.antsmarching.org
> ftp: connect :Unknown error number
ftp>
**so I try to open by IP
C:\>ftp 129.74.166.237
> ftp: connect :Unknown error number
ftp>
Debug and Verbose are on, but don't show any better messages. Someone please try and shed a little light on this for me! TIA

Thank means the server is not online.

All of them? Some of these servers info pages say that they've been up for 2 years with almost NO downtime and they all say "ONLINE" on the FTP Servers page (all the ones I'm trying at least). I think that it has to be something else, as I tried almost every server listed and some of them more than once and at different times of the day (yesterday and today).

I tried Joe, but I got the same error. AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!! Man, this is frustrating. Anyone else got any ideas why this could be happening...

Is passive mode FTP enabled on NAT? I was pretty sure that command line FTP won't work on some servers because it doesn't allow you to choose passive mode.
I could be wrong, but it's worth a shot. Also, what about trying some other FTP program besides the command line program, still have the same problems?

Good thought, but I'm in PASV mode and just to be sure I tried using WSFTP and IE with no better results. I've tried PASV and PORT with all three programs and I can't connect. I tried connecting to some other FTP sites with all of the programs and met with success. Is it the router??? I've disabled the firewall and had no luck then either. I'm totally and completely stumped.

you could try to ping the server from your machine. if you can do that then try and connect and see what happens.
also i know people behind a router that can not connect to my machine behind a router.
not sure what software you have tried, but what about smart ftp?

I am rather surprised that you are having success with other sites, the only common thread that all of the antsmarchign sites have is that they connect through port 21. But then again, this isn't a very uncommon port for FTP protocol.
I would be very interested in exactly what other FTP servers you are able to connect to and over which ports you are connecting to them.
My guess is that it is a problem with NAT. When you attempt to make a connection over PASV I believe that it uses a port on your machine that is >1024 to actually make the connection. I might be readign stuff wrong, but I am pretty sure that is how it works. I don't know what ports you have open on your NAT, but this could be the reason why.

I would tend to aggree that it is a problem with the NAT somehow. To make issues a little more muddled; I can take the router out of the way and all is well, but router in -- no bueno! I called a couple friends that I know use similar routers and NONE of them can connect either, but all can if they unplug the router...
I can successfully connect to:
openbsd.com
tugraz.at
tux.org
ttu.edu
unc.edu
...and many more without problems.

I'm using the standard DHCP from the M$ router for NAT
