I was just wonderin what the the cutaways adds or takes away from a traditional dreadnought...i've played both but i've never sat down and played two side by side to hear the difference...basically what are the pros and cons?

pros: you can reach the high frets on the trebble strings, some say it looks nice

cons: some people say it takes away sound/volume since there is less wood to vibrate. on high end guitars though, you shouldn't hear too much of a difference between cutaways and non-cutaways

:) Glad to help.

I've never heard the difference. I think it would be hard to do. I really enjoy my cutaway. I don't play that high on the neck all that often, but when I do, it's dreeeeemy.

You can really hear the difference in a classical, or at least I have. I'd love to have a A/E classical with a cutaway but I never can find one with good presence or volume.

you technically do lose some surface area obviously, but it's damn hard to tell the difference...close your eyes and have someone play one of each...you can't tell

Dunno... maybe I'm too much of a volume/projection nerd when I play guitars in a store. If I were blindfolded, I could tell you that a guitar lacked volume, but a cutaway guitar wouldn't sound THAT obvious to me.
