I might get totally ragged on for asking this question, but i recently have been setting up a trade, and all the shows the guy has are on VCD's, and of course i have no clue what the difference is between them and regular CDR's. So if anyone can clue me in... that would be great. What can you use to play them? How much do they cost? Stuff like that.
Appreciate it,
Brandon Martin

VCD's are computer video files (like MPEG, AVI and so on) recorded onto a cdr and played back as video's only, the difference with these is that they can also be played on standard dvd players. DVD doesn't necessarily mean better quality if the footage was not high quality to begin with.
you only get partial credit.
VCD = MPEG1
SVCD = MPEG2
an avi can not be a VCD. it has to be converted to MPEG first.
VCD's are compressed big time so you lose a lot of the quality.

Sorry, you're giving a lesson to the wrong white boy (lol), i've been using TMpeg for some time now to convert mpeg's and avi's. Let me quote exactly what you said:
"i would suggest asking for a DVD B&P. much better quality."
This is way too generalized to mean anything, a mpeg1 file converted to a DVD isn't necessarily any better, like for instance, a 3vcd dmb show converted to one DVD, same video quality, same sound quality, etc etc. Unless you wanna mix down the sound for 5.1, but why bother if it's a audience recording or even a soundboard recording which may be a mono or stereo recording and lack dynamics. Regarding SVCD, there's quite a few steps in quality (depending on resolution used and bit rates, etc etc), the best quality SVCD files i've seen equaled like 200+MB's=4 minutes of footage. SVCD isn't necessarily equal to DVD's based on video and sound quality, i've downloaded tons of mpeg2 files, quality varies from one rip to the next.
I can't wait to get my new pc up and running with my dvd recorder, first up at bat is the pro shot dmb show from 7.12.00, one dvd disc and i'm definitely gonna chapter it up :)

this is exactly why the DVD's that are out there are NOT made from MPEG files. they are taken directly from the master DV.

Cuz i don't feel like inserting one cdr after another, it's a 3 cdr show, why not just put it on one dvd with chapters? :confused:

it could be the music cdr's, my discman flat out refuses to read any of them and my main deck does read them though, i imagine dvd player's are a bit more finicky like my discman.
