i just read the DMB taping policy. doesn't this quote from that policy make the public http server on this website illegal?

quote:
In addition to helping fans recreate the live experience, we hope tape trading will foster greater interaction within the fan community. Any method of trading that does not involve personal fan interaction defeats the spirit of this goal of the taping policy and is not authorized. In particular, posting audio or video files on web sites for streaming to or downloading by the public, is not authorized.

this question has been asked a thousand times. short answer: no. if you want the full answer search it out.

The server is not public. You need to register with the site before you can use it, so no average Joe can use it. I think that was part of the archive.org issue if I remember correctly.

i'm not going to argue whether or not the server goes against dmb policy, because...well...i like it. :D

but, since there's no fee to register, no age limit, and i'm pretty sure matt and james aren't doing background checks on new users...then, yes...any average Joe can use it (assuming they know how to type their own name).

well, yes, i like it too and wouldn't want to see the site removed, but i just wonder if DMB would see it as public, since anyone can register. it isn't exactly private, even though you have to register.

it is private. this is a privatly owned site subject to rules and regulations that you agree to upon registering, and that includes both the forum and the rest of the sites content. And it builds community interaction, which is what the taping policy asks for as well.

Basicaly - this sites too fucking big for it to not be noticed. so for the past what... year?... we've been downloading, dont you think if it was a problem then it wouldve been addressed by the bands management? and yes, the band and its management know about this site.

In my opinion the Ants server gets abused. Lots of peple come, download anything they want, and don't interact. I'm not saying I'm for or against it, but though it is technically "legal," in practice it really doesn't seem too in line with DMB's policy. I personally don't really like the idea that any shlub with a cable modem can just jump online and grab 600 shows without ever having to even attempt to trade.

i consider the forum and the downloading section two dif. parts of this awesome website. if they dont want to interact, fine with them, theyre just missing a huge part of this site:)

Yeah, that last part...how many people here can barely handle that? I mean, just look at what happens in just this area of the forums... ;)

Well maybe you'll learn a little more about forum interaction now, because you sure won't be doing any downloading anytime soon.

Call into question a topic that has been discussed at length already, make a bonehead statement about the visibility of this site, and press the issue as if you want to stir up problems, and you're going to catch the responses you got.

You won't have to worry about the legalities anymore. You can't access it. Happy? :)

Should I edit my post above to say "any shlub EXCEPT that guy" ?
