I recently read a thread about how recording direct to a Computer's Hard Drive would be the next step in progression in recording after the DAT era.

I have been thinking about getting into recording shows lately but have been leary about dropping some serious cash on all that equipment that I could only logically use for recording shows.

But, I have been in the process of picking out a laptop for some time so I figured that these two things would go together quite well.

I am just wondering if people could give me some advice about what I might use. I have looked at various .TXT files from tapers shows but I don't want to go get stuff that people use for DAT recordings when in fact I might want to take an alternate route since I will be recording to a laptop.

Here are my plans so far:

I am looking at getting a 17" Apple Powerbook
- backlit keys a bonus for those dark nights at Alpine :)

I was also thinking about using ProTools for the Audio Recording software for the shows.

scott brown and bastable use laptops
you should try and talk to them
i heard though that most people who use laptops also run dat backups still

if you want the comp for recording i would go with the 12 inch too
i also wouldn't worry to much about light, if tyou have a spot good enough to tape from you will have lots of bright lights around you and the screen is pretty bright
don't forget every taper should have a mini maglight too :)
