Is it better to sing terrible than to not sing at all? I'm not a very good singer but I do it when no ones around. Should I start playing and singing to people?

honestly: everyone can sing. it just takes a lot of practice for some. fiona apple never took a lesson in her life, but for those like you and i: we can (after maybe lessons) can sing more on key, understaned melody behind music and etc than other who "sound " better. everyone can sing. i am convinced. if you work at it enough and WANT to sound "ok". and even tone-deaf ppl i have heard sing more on key than i.

but as for your question: it 's better to sing bad than not sing at all... that way you can learn the limits of your voice early on..otherwise you won't know what you can and cant do if you ever go for something higher

I just want to be able to sing in tune. I guess I'll just sing by myself until I'm ready.

What has helped me is singing along to songs in the car and holding one hand over an ear and try to sing in the same key. I hope i am saying that right. but try that for a while and if you practice every day you will start seeing results. Atleast I did. Some one on Ants told me to do so a coulple of months back.

If John Mayer can do it, I guess you can. More power bro (or sis).

I've been trying for a while now though...I guess a few months. And I can only do a few songs on key, and make them sound decent...with difficulty. I can play em fine...just cant sing em. :( I dunno....doesnt seem like practice is really getting me anywhere. Lessons seem a bit extreme...I just wanna do this for fun ultimately. I think i am a bti tone deaf

buy a mic and something to play it through and listen to yourself. It will tell you true voice.

A lot of people who claim they "can't" sing are shy too.. :D I maintained I couldn't sing for a while until I said fuck it and played a short set for some friends over the summer. Played a little Loving Wings to get warmed up and then played some Ants with all the high notes. You have to be decent but confidence is a huge factor as well.

Oh man.. I can relate to that. Not that song, but I originally was going to play Christmas Song to warm up. It was the first song I learned completely. I went for the first line, and my voice cracked awfully and it just sounded so high and whiny.. and that was that.
