I'm not sure if I want to go for the acoustic-electric .
Right now I have a Martin DX1 and a Takamine EG530SC ( acoustic-electric ).

Go to any guitar store and try every guitar they have in your price range. Which ever one you like best, buy that one.

OR, after you find some that you like, come back with specific questions, then people who have those guitars can give personal experience with quality-over-time.

Some brands/models you should look into that most people, sadly, don't know exist.

Lakewood D1 - great sound. really thin wood. you get get it for abouit 1000.

Larrivee - Don't know any models of the top of my head, but I love these things everytime I play them.

I recommend Taylor, but I'm biased.

I have a 314ce-LTD, solid maple back, sides and neck. I love it, and I will definitely be buying more Taylors.

That was just the guitar that spoke to me the best. I liked the tone, the playability, the design, the comfort, blah, blah, blah.....In short, it was everything I wanted in a guitar.

Play A LOT of guitars and different brands before you choose.

Go play some Gibsons, Guilds, Taylors, and some Martins......see what speaks to you, because, believe me, they are ALL different.

you could save some money and get a $500 or so Takamine or Dean acoustic/electric...they are both becoming pretty good quality guitars...and with the extra money buy some other cool stuff for guitar, cuz once you start lookin around you'll see all sorts of cool gadgets and what not...or do what i wanna do, save up for a cabinet amp...

Rule number one dont buy a guitar from a website especially an acoustic. All of them sound and play slightly or drastically diff. A 1000+ dollar martin can sound worse than a 180 dollar epiphone. Speaking of that i actually paid 160 dollars for a guitar that is an absolute gem. I like it better than most martin's i have played even 1000+ dollar ones. My friend picked up my guitar (he is my guitar hero by the way) right after i got it. He asked me how much i paid for it. I told him it was 180 with a gigbag and an extra set of strings. He starts laughing his ass off. He says "no seriously what did you drop for this thing like 800-900?" I sid no i am telling you the truth. His face gets totally serious and says "do they have anymore of this model left?" so we ran back to the music store and they had 1 left and he picks it up and plays it. It sounded good for a cheap guitar but wasnt even close to the one i bought.

What $180 guitar did you buy?

I bought a Fender DG-10LH for $130, and mine's either one of thoese that is oustanding from the rest, or the whole line is pretty good...I'm not sure. But I've had it in tune since May. Excellent guitar..the action is PERFECT. I agree with Alex..you may find something for a lot cheaper that still satisifies you.

I got a Martin D-15 for an early B-day present at $700 even, and it plays like a dream. Sounds better to me than some of the high end Taylors. It's all personal preference though, to me, telling someone which guitars are better/worse than others, is like telling someone what a song means, or forcing an interpretation, that sort of thing. You don't know until you hear for yourself.

I am biased too... but I love the Taylor 410-CE, $1250. I still have a old acoustic Fender passed on from my dad, definately not a Taylor, but still love to play that thing.
