if there were concrete reasons as to why the server is down, they would be posted as an "update" in the download login area.

and it'll be up when it's up. remember--people run this site out of their own free time and sometimes their own personal lives have stuff going on that is more important than fixing a paid for by them free server for the community.

And not to insult anyone's intelligence, but how many people would understand the ins and outs of server maintenance?

So let's say we put up a long winded explanation of what's going on. Then we get the questions, "What's that mean?" It never ends.

Well considering the fact that all you have to do from the homepage to find out the server status is:
1. Click on downloads
2. Scroll down the page

it really gets a little old seeing questions about this. You can only imagine how 20 of these questions a day make the Mods feel, so I do my best to discourage people from asking. :) Have a nice day!

Nevermind the mods. I think the average Ants user has a much shorter fuse when it comes to all questions like this. I'm proof. :)

Directly from the download page:
The 1990-2002 SHN Server is currently Down.
Should be up back up soon.
The 2003 SHN Server is currently Down.
Currently unavailable but should be back up soon. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Now there isn't a why but there is an indication of when. So I believe that was the question.

I'll be glad when it's back up just because people can stop complaining.

I think it's my fault the servers down. Since I graduated in May I've been waiting for high speed internet to reach my house in northern MA. I haven't been able to hear a single song from the 2003 tour except for the one show I went to in Mansfield yet. The day I scheduled with comcast to get connected was the day the server went down.

That's just the way my life seems to work.

Yet more proof Comcast sucks. You know, aside from the fact I cannot upload over 20k/s without having to reset my modem, or the fact their DNS servers rarely work (not that I'm using them ALL the time, hehe), or those nights when the service just drops for no reason.

I've found the service quite good so far. It may be that my area is too busy yet and therefore there is much more consistency in the quality.

I'm anxious to see what speeds I can get off the server when it goes back up. On dial up I couldn't get higher than 1.5kb/s, which meant about 12 hours to download a song the lenght of I Did It.

Hrmm, perhaps. When it was Comcast@Home, speeds were insane (200K up and nearly 1MB down). And almost zero downtime. Then @Home went dodo. Now I'm capped @ 32/180 approx. I can't even reach the 32k up since I get cut off at any point over 20K/s. And I average about 10-15 hours of outages per week. But, when it is working, it's fast downloading, I usually hit that 180K/s barrier and it sticks.

BTW, I pull the max possible speed from the Ants server here. If yer capped expect somewhere around that. If yer not, expect more. If you have a very busy/full node, expect less. It's tough to tell, really, heh.

Heh, the day I got broadband is the day the server (02) went down as well. I am averaging 3300 kbps (thats *bits* - about 412.5 K *bytes*) downstream, but I have nothing to download. Oh well... I'm sure the all-knowing super-secret extra special on-top-of-everything admins here at Ants are working feverishly around their own and the Jones's personal lives to devote every free second they have to considering the restoration of the servers :rolleyes: :D .

Is anybody else having trouble with the ants downloader for the part of the server that is back up? I seem to get this error everytime I try to login.

Could not login! Please check username and password.
Too many IPs for this account! Please wait 15 minutes if your IP address has changed.
Time since last login is -3122747041 seconds.

I have done everything I can think of, DL the ants file again, DL the program again, check my password and username. I am stumped. If somebody could help that would be cool.

Oh yeah, thanks guys for an awesome site and sharing the music as you do.

I'm having this problem too, it sounds like it's a server issue. I'm sure the admins will post something when they have it fixed.

In the mean time, you could always download one track at a time. :)
