I don't see how anyone would think this is a prequel. The written trailer clearly says this season takes place 18 months after the last the one ended. In fact, I don't think this season will have anything to do with the first 3.
Trust me, it'll tie back in. They're already making mention of what happened at the end of S1. :) "It took Jack Bauer a long time to be happy again....then Day 4 began."

During the first hour, when Heller and Audrey are in the car on the way to his son's house, one of them mentions meeting someone named Max at Vandenburg.

Later on we find out that someone had to have told the terrorists that Heller was meeting his son, because it wasn't on his schedule.

Perhaps this Max is the same guy from S2, and they're finally going to resolve that loose end.

Or I'm just dreaming. Anyway, excellent start to the season.

if they didn't know who he was at the start of the show (ie: before his 'discovery'), how did they know what cell number to track? is it as simple as getting it from his mom or from the girl in his office they killed?

I disagree. I think they used the numbers in the mother's phone (checked recently dialed/received calls) - then used a node [conveniently shown when the camera panned to the terrorist's screen] to tap into the cell phone signal, they just happened to hear what CTU said on the other end.

If there is another mole in CTU this season I will be surprised and severely disappointed.
