Tom is the font closer to authentic? It looks closer than v1 did on mine. I also went with a color on 1.1 that was closer to the color of those attachments I gave [which were just captured from s3 DVD].

Fittingly- I'm not sure the true-type fonts want to cooperate with flash mx. I installed the ds digital bold italic [which looks almost perfect] and it won't show up.

I've logged enough hours on this today. Maybe I'll give it another whirl tomorrow.

It may just be my computer, but the font looks totally wrong. It looks like Times New Roman.

Fox's drama series in which special agent Jack Bauer races against the clock to save the world for terrorism, has angered America's Muslim community by its portrayal of a Muslim family as a terrorist sleeper cell at the heart of a dastardly plot.

In response to the complaints from the Council of American-Islamic Relations the network has agreed to a modest mea culpa issuing stations that air the show with public service spots that depict the American Muslim community in a positive light.

"We met with representatives of CAIR on Wednesday and found the meeting productive and informative and we look forward to working with them in the future," was the only statement Fox (accustomed to complaints about the content of its programming) issued about the issue.

On www.cair-net.org CAIR thanked Fox for "the opportunity to address the Muslim community's concerns and for the willingness of network officials to take those concerns seriously in an atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation." The organization also stated "network representatives said they had already reviewed existing episodes and removed some aspects that could potentially be viewed as stereotypical."

On previous seasons of 24, which is headlined by Kiefer Sutherland as Bauer, the terrorists have included both Eastern Europeans and rogue US agents. This fourth season the main terrorists are a Muslim dad, mom and teenage son. Even before the first four episodes premiered this past Sunday and Monday as a heavily promoted "2" day, "4" hour event, a DVD, released in issues of an entertainment magazine in order to hype the premiere, had riled up CAIR. The organization's concerns escalated when the premiere episodes aired and at 10:39 A.M in the fourth episode the mother Dina Araz (portrayed by Iranian born actress Shohreh Aghdashloo, Best Supporting Oscar nominee last year for House of Sand and Fog) was depicted poisoning her son's non-Muslim girlfriend because she thinks the girl might jeopardize their plans.

Rabiah Ahmed, a spokeswoman for CAIR, told Reuters, the protest was an effort to counter the stereotypical depiction of Muslims on television, which studies show influence public perception of her community. Civil rights abuses and hate crimes against Muslims have reportedly escalated since the 9/11 attacks, and surveys commissioned by CAIR show that more than 40 percent of Americans think its okay because of the war on terror to curb Muslims' civil rights.

"What we are hoping to do is to try and mitigate the damages of the stereotypes because it can bring real-life consequences on American Muslims and their lives here," Ahmed said. She backed up her argument by citing a public opinion survey conducted by Cornell University last year and stating, "There aren't any positive or even neutral portrayals of Muslims on TV; whenever Muslims or Arabs are portrayed it is always in a stereotypical way."

The show's creative and executive production team attended the meeting along with Fox representatives.

E!Online calls to the producers' office were referred back to the Fox spokesperson.

CAIR has requested the public service announcements, sponsored by their organization, be aired in proximity to 24 which airs Mondays (9 p.m. ET/PT). However its up to local station managers to choose if and when to run the 30 and 60 second spots, which reportedly state, "Muslims are part of the fabric of this great country and are working to build a better America."

I guess they have a problem with the airing of an idea that is a reality. I see no problem with what Fox has done. It's a perfectly feasible scenario.

I guess no matter who they choose, they're going to get some section from that group that is offended by it. Their problem is, their own kind are the ones most publically responsible for the 'terrorism' as of late - I guess they are ignoring it, and expect the rest of us to also.

You know, I understand that Jack's gotta do some crazy shit, but every episode, he obeys the orders that are given to him.

Before he was let go by the cops, I turned to my dad and said in a humorous tone, "Boy, I can't wait to see how he gets out of this one." I wasn't expecting that to happen.

By the way, props to Behrooz - when Debbie's phone was ringing- I expected Mr. Araz to pull Debbie's mom in and put a bullet in her head on the spot.

Oh, and, obviously Jack is going in. It would be un-24-like if he were to go in and save the day saving both Heller and Audrey, and single handedly foil the entire plot. Someone is going to escape, and they're going to have the briefcase, Audrey, or Heller.

This is all speculation, I haven't read anything about next week, so this is not a spoiler, just a guess.

Behrooz is going to turn on his parents at some point, and help the authorities find the terrorists. Marianne has alterior motives, but I believe that in the end she will end up being an asset to the CTU. Heller will be killed, but the daughter will be alive , but taken by the white guy, I thinkthis is where Behrooz may come in to help find out who and where he is.

Yeah, the whole sequence when you saw the look strike in Jack's face, you KNEW what was going through his head. That's why having the 3 prior days under your belt benefits the viewer. We know how Jack thinks, so that scene was that much more enjoyable.

24 News

Jack Bauer's going to have to call in the reinforcements to get through this one.

Facing heat over how Muslims are depicted in its countdown thriller series 24, Fox is working to mend fences before time's up.

The latest season of the Fox drama, which kicked off a week ago, stars Kiefer Sutherland as special agent Bauer. His latest race against the clock to save the world from terrorism has angered America's Muslim community by its portrayal of a Muslim family as a sleeper cell at the heart of a dastardly plot.

Rabiah Ahmed, spokeswoman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told Broadcasting and Cable that the show is "taking everyday American Muslim families and making them suspects...It's very dangerous and very disturbing."

In response to the complaints, the network has agreed to a modest mea culpa--offering a public service spot to its affiliates that depicts the American Muslim community in a positive light.

"We met with representatives of CAIR on Wednesday and found the meeting productive and informative and we look forward to working with them in the future," Fox said in a brief statement.

On its Website, www.cair-net.org, CAIR thanked Fox for "the opportunity to address the Muslim community's concerns and for the willingness of network officials to take those concerns seriously in an atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation."

"Network representatives said they had already reviewed existing episodes and removed some aspects that could potentially be viewed as stereotypical," the organization added.

On previous seasons of 24, the terrorists have included Eastern Europeans and rogue U.S. and British agents. This fourth season the main terrorists so far are a Muslim dad, mom and teenage son.

CAIR was ticked off even before 24's clock started ticking down with its first four episodes on Jan. 9 and 10. The group was tipped off after a promo DV Dwas issued in Entertainment Weekly. Then, CAIR's concerns escalated when the premiere episodes aired and, at 10:39 a.m. in the fourth episode, the mother, Dina Araz (portrayed by Iranian born actress Shohreh Aghdashloo, Best Supporting Oscar nominee last year for House of Sand and Fog) was depicted poisoning her son's non-Muslim girlfriend because she thinks the girl might jeopardize their plans.

CAIR rep Ahmed says the group wants to avoid sterotyping of Muslims, which could translate into ill-will and even civil rights abuses or hate crimes. Ahmed reports that, per surveys conducted by CAIR, most Americans believe it's okay to curb Muslim's civil rights during the war on terror.

The show's creative and executive production team attended the meeting along with Fox netowrk representatives. (Producers referred all calls back to Fox.)

CAIR, which is sponsoring the PSAs, has requested the 30- and 60-spots be broadcast before, during or after 24, which airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT. However, it will ultimately be up to local station managers to choose if and when to run the PSAs, which feature the line: "Muslims are part of the fabric of this great country and are working to build a better America."

I still stand by my assertion that we'll never see anything like that on television again. That entire first season was perfection. Think about it - everything ends with a happy ending in entertainment. How gutsy was it to end a season with that? And here we are...5 years later (in the 24 world), and there still hasn't been resolution? That might be the saddest finale I've ever seen.

True type fonts may not be alter-able in macromedia [flash program]. I thought about it- and as cool as it would be- I'm not looking to blow 42 bucks on a font for a screen saver. Like I said, I emailed Fox about a screen saver. Hopefully they'll put out an authentic one- then I won't have to bother.

fox can be a bitch about copyright stuff. back when i was a HS freshman, i was obsessed with the simpsons, and was big into the simpsons online fan community. lots of websites, i even made one myself. that community had a big problem with FOX though. the network would often send Cease and Desist orders threatening legal action to the webmasters, telling them to remove content from the site (usually screenshots, audio, video, and other fun things). most of the good and big site had been shut down several times, only to reopen at a new domain with a new name.

I just finished rewatching the first 8 episodes of Season 1. Damnn that's some good shit. It's very powerful to go back and see the show beginning.
Some things I noticed. At first there were quite a few actual songs used in the show. It didn't take too long though for the people making the show to realize what a brilliant jon Sean Callery was doing with the score and within 4 or 5 episodes there is hardly any music other than the score.
The windows in Season 1 move very quickly from split screen into full screen when animated. In episode 1 there is a camera clicking noise as each window falls into place instead of the slow whoooooooshhhh....kerrang!!!! The clock ticking in episode one is also hilarious. By episode 2 they introduce the clicking sound we are familiar with now, the deep echoing BLINK, BLINK, BLINK, BLINK.
Tony's terrible little chin fluff changes from episode 1 to 2.
The damn show kicks ass. I remember thinking how good the show was as I watched S1.1 airing for the first time, then all of a sudden Mandy blows up the plane and I was like :eek :eek
Greatest show ever.
I'm rewatching Season 1 with a friend who I just got into Season 4 and has never watched any 24 before - probably because of the Toronto Maple Leafs. So something good has come out of the hockey labour dispute - a new 24 fan. Plus I get to rewatch all of Season's 1 and 2 with someone who's never seen them before which is great. this is my third full viewing of Season 1.

About this Muslim thing...

1.) Quit your bitching, it's TV, not real life.
2.) Did people from Kosovo get pissed with the Drazens?
3.) Did the British get pissed with Saunders?

This isn't even the first time Muslims have been potrayed as the enemy in this show, but I don't recall anyone getting bent out of shape during the second season. Oh, I guess it was okay because it was the little white girl and not her Muslim fiancee..

Sorry, but I can't stand people getting offended by the slightest thing...

Tough call. On the one hand, all the time in between episodes of s4, you easily have enough time to finish all 3 seasons before season 4 ends. You would be all caught up on Jack's past and s4 would make that much more sense. There is also no such thing as
too much 24. 19 weeks is a long time to wait to watch the first 3 seasons.

On the other, you don't want to get your stories and plots all mixed up. Once you start a season, it's tough to stop without finishing it.

How do you go about "unpacking" a .RAR file?

Winrar

You should be able to google it and at least get a trial version.

I am having to bust my f-ing balls to keep from ruining tomorrow night. Dammit Fox, I know you're excited about 24, but stop showing spoiler clips from the following night's episode.

is what they are showing in these commercials that big of a surprise? I havent seen any, but how much could they reveal?

Ben F.
01-23-2005, 05:30 PM
Whether or not Jack goes in. Whether or not he gets anyone out. Who ends up in whose possession. What the cliffhanger for next week might be.

I don't care if they reveal the style of Jack's shirt - I don't want to know anything :)

You'll need to download the following file [screen saver and font (Digital Readout Thick)], unpack it, and install the font [control panel->font->file: install new font]and drop the screen saver into c:/windows/system32

right click and save target as (http://www.clemson.edu/~btfowle/24 Clock Screen Saver v1.1package.rar)

I realize the font is not authentic, but we found one that looks like a dead on match, but it's 42 dollars. I emailed Fox and the 24 fan club - if I hear back I'll post it here.

hey Ben, what program is needed to open up an .ssp file. I can't get the screensaver

Ben F.
01-23-2005, 11:25 PM
ssp?

when you open that package- it should come with a font and a screensaver file [.scr maybe]. Install the font- and copy/paste the screen saver into c:/windows/system 32

DMBfan41
01-24-2005, 12:36 AM
i did that, then what do i do?

Ben F.
01-24-2005, 12:53 AM
Right click on your desktop - pick the screen saver tab at the top - then go in the pulldown menu for which screen savers you can use- and pick 24 clock screen saver v 1.1 and hit apply or ok.

You guys did use winRAR to unpack the file you downloaded from Clemson's server- ending up with a .scr file and a font file, right? The font file should be installed [directions above] and the .scr file should just be copied and pasted into c:/windows/system 32. Other people are getting this right, gentlement, pretty sure it's not on my end.

The season is very nice so far. My wife and I watched the first five hours in one sitting yesterday. She wasn't able to be home for the first night so we taped it. We had not had time to watch it so we just keep taping each show. It was a real bitch changing the station every time a 24 spot came on so that we wouldn't catch anything too soon. I'm glad to be up to speed and can't wait for tonights show! Hope to be in here more often to talk about the best damn show on tv!

If you watch S1 again you'll note Jack changes shirts at least 3 times between S1.1 and S1.6
When I left on Friday my roommates were at S1.17
I got home last night they were on S2.6 telling me how blown away they were by the last 10 minutes of S1.24
Tonight's episode is going to be brilliant and I'm so glad I know nothing about it at all.

You get up early for a man living in Central Time!

Also note how much better the desks and lockers look in S3 than they do in S1. Made me think that this is probably due to S2
