I was just thinking, what actually would've been a nicer ending was the news of Sutherland re-upping for another few contract years having been a false plant in the press to have people drop their guard, and then BAM -- have the Chinese kill him right there on that boat in the final seconds. Go out in style. Which, damn, ya think about it, that boat was already a couple minutes out to sea when we saw it, just how friggin quickly did they get him on that thing?? :ugh Typical special "24 time" :lol
mehh... the only last bit of submarine threat in the 23rd hour just seemed like some last ditch effort the writers came up with right at the last minute to provide one last terrorism scare, and also to kill the time needed to get to the final hour. I mean, considering how Bierko & Co entered the damn thing, he dropped that in there, the gas released for all of about, what, 20 seconds or something 10 feet below them, then EVERYONE on the sub was dead? wtf?? Like the way they portrayed it, they could've just as easily gone in there guns blazing to secure the sub, they didn't need "one more mystery can of nerve gas that's been held back until now.... oooh.. ahhhh". Aside from Jack having to talk the Navy newbie into killing his first human there really wasn't much suspense to it, all in all with Henderson the thread was quelled rather quickly.

haha, well you just may be right there, Brian. Lord knows that the 2nd half of season 2 got so beyond laughably bad that I swore up and down I wouldn't return for the 3rd season, and yet.... I did :devil
And no, I don't even feel this one wound down nearly as bad as that, but I think it's time for me to pack it in on 24 (and again, with perhaps the influx of quality new pgms there may be this fall, so...)
It's just real tough in a way, because for as much as this show frustrates me, especially being a writer myself, I've so long been a Kiefer Sutherland fan and was so happy for him that summer of 2001 when the inaugural season was impending, with so much buzz behind it, there were these cool 24 billboards up all over Los Angeles at the time. He's been one of my really top favorite and underrated character actors since the mid-80s and especially after virtually falling totally into obscurity in the video bin in the late 90s, it's like he was finally getting some real due and recognition that I'd always hoped he'd find. And don't get me wrong, those first 13 of season 1 was really quality, interesting TV. I just don't think the series can continue to sustain itself as is and be worthy, the model itself is too flawed. I'd like to see him be able to do challenging and compelling work, I just can't see it happening here with this show anymore. :shrug

Nothing whatsoever that you didn't already know. It's just as well you didn't watch it because it was a complete waste of five minutes sitting there waiting for it.

When Jack was down with the Chinese he said "i know how these things work, let me have one phone call" what do you think that was about? Was he going to call Kim?

When Jack was down with the Chinese he said "i know how these things work, let me have one phone call" what do you think that was about? Was he going to call Kim?My first thought was that the Chinese would just laugh at his request, but I think they may let him do it (considering he could still be locked away in hiding for a significant period, regardless of his value).
My thinking is that the phone call he makes, should he get one, will be to a person who has been pre-designated for such a scenario in which he gets captured.
We all know Jack, and he didn't spend the last 18 months just sitting on his ass. You can bet he was prepared for such a situation.

that's what I was thinking....there is someone out there that knows to help Jack when he gets "the call".
But at the same time, maybe it was to call Kim so he could talk to her before he gets locked away.
Either way, i'm still in shock about the way the season ended. Hearing a demoralized Jack saying "kill me....kill me..." had me shaking.

Yea I didn't quite get that line myself. It's like, ehhh Jack, in your chlyroform(sp?) induced haze did you mistake this dank ship's hull for a police station? :lol You don't have your Miranda read to you here son, you don't get "one phone call", you've been covertly kidnapped by the Chinese government. There ain't quite any rules where he is now.
But obviously the Chinese feel they can get something for him, I highly doubt the boss's reference to Jack being "far too valuable to kill" was just alluding to how extensively they'd wanna torture him first en route to eventually just killing him. But what and from whom? The US? That's a natural first assumption, it would likely be something that could overall weaken America's stance over China in the larger global picture, I would think. Something that they consider would make the world look at China more as an equal to the US.

Well then I don't know what the hell to tell ya there kiddo, because I've seen other people here praise season 2, and as I just said a couple posts ago, most of that (especially its second half), degenerated into the most awesomely bad television of the last decade, so if someone loved that stretch that just scares the hell outta me for what they label quality. I mean we're talking the infamous Kim Bauer/cougar showdown, Kevin Dillon as Crazy Nature Man, etc etc :lol

i think the real time format is starting to limit the show. there are only so many one day scenarios they can dream up, without getting repetitive. Especially at the end they really started to take some huge liberties with time. the ship thing you could argue that they choppered him out to a ship that was already en route, but some things, like how long it took logan to fly to the cermony and so on, were really stretching it. and come on, logan's an older man, he's going to take more than 7 minutes to ride the first lady train.

I think you completely misinterpreted the situation...he said he knows how things work...in Jack's mind, he knew they were going to kill him, so he just wanted one phone call to say goodbye to his daughter. That's my interpretation, and I thought it was pretty obvious.
And S2 was one of the best seasons, easily. I mean, no doubt. Other than Kim/Couger (which was extremely pointless, it was one short scene if I recall) and Kim/the cabin guy, the second half was pretty damn good. Not as good as the end of S1 or S3, I don't think...but there was a lot of intrigue, and it was a very suspenseful season. Some of those episodes are just simply classics. The ep. around the discovery of the bomb, those with Nina were absolutely classics. Laughably bad?? Not a chance. I could find much worse any given day on any of the major networks.

The Sports Guy would agree with you. In his article today, he wrote something along the lines of "I don't know what was more shocking from this season...Logan's involvment in everything or the fact that he suffers from pre-mature ejaculation." Classic stuff. :lol
Not only did he take 7 minutes, but he rode the first lady train, and then was already re-dressed in 7 minutes. Either she is a pro or he just hasn't gotten any in forever and got off in a second. Gross old people sex...

My favorite are the last 2 hours of Season 1 where Nina is outed and Palmer and Sherri are at their ends. That scene in the hotel room bathroom where Palmer explodes on Sherri is my favorite single non-Kiefer scene in the entire series. Then shortly thereafter, Kiefer's Russell Crowe-esque Gladiator tearful meltdown into his renegade assault on the Drazen compound is peformed and filmed masterfully.
"DAMN YOU SHERRI IF THAT CHILD DIES!!!" - Dennis Haysbert's best delivery of line in the series....and then when he throws the vase. THAT is what drama television is all about.
There was a interview with Penny Johnson Jerald where she said that Haysbert entered that scene without her knowledge so that she was legitimately taken aback by his entrance, and she even said she was honestly frightened by Haysbert in that scene b/c he delievered it so well.
S1 is just so god damn good. I could go on forever about it.

It's too hard to recall a lot of my favorite episodes...so many of them run together, especially because I watched most of S1 and S2 in only a few sittings each....
But yeah, some of my favorites are definitely the last 2 of S1...The Nina twist was amazing (not perfectly reasonable, but it was effective). And the last episode is possibly the best ever. I really enjoyed the episode of S3 where they killed off Chappelle...I think it was S3.18. Simply an amazing episode. Great action, the way they tricked the audience with Saunders, and then Chappelle's reaction to Saunders not being at the location they thought...and the final scene...gutwrenching. For S2, I really loved a lot of the middle episodes...they were so classic. The plane crash (again, not perfectly reasonable, but still a very good section b/w Jack and Nina aftewards resulted), George after learning about the radiation poisoning...just great, in my opinion.

:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup Easily one of the most memorable scenes of the entire series ever. Haysbert is impeccable in this scene. I think Season 1 is my favorite season. The meltdown of David and Sherri's relationship is so brilliantly done.

JUST FINISHED THIS SEASON!!!
:bounce :bounce
long post ahead:
I backread a few pages from the end of the season finale. It's been an amazing few months, from when my roommate was watching the season premiere, and I sat down just to see what "24" was all about. I continued to watch season 5 til about episode 9, when they started talking about old events, characters etc. and I stopped and since then have been trying fervently to catch up from Season 1 (that's a lot of 24 in that time!) And unfortunately I wasn't able to catch up to the finale in time to watch it on tv, but I just watched 23 and 24. In watching all 5, I've never fist-pumped so many times, or gotten so excited about something on TV.
Damn that was all awesome, I'll just add some of my opinions here and there, and I'm sure a lot of this has been discussed, maybe as far back as season 1, but I wasn't here.
So, funny how Logan is such a weak and stupid moron yet they reveal him to be a mastermind in the end; but I guess he was still pretty incapable of dealing with it alone. I couldn't believe how simply and easily they killed off Tony, I was in a bad mood after that. I was afraid towards the end they were going to reveal some other mole within CTU (like someone BIG- Buchanan, Chloe, Curtis) but I underestimated the writers and they weren't that stupid. Again, I'm just throwing random things out here, and not everything really.
Also, a few pages back someone was talking about the nerve gas in the sub not hurting Bierko's men by burning their skin, even though it ate through the seals at CTU. If you remember, Chloe said, in that episode, it had been mixed with some kind of agent or something designed to corrode them. So I take it that was a one-time case with that canister.
In the past few weeks I came to two random questions, which, again, may have been mentioned before:
1- Why is CTU, a government building, so poorly-lit? :lol I mean, the main floor is lit by what seems like a few spotlights, and every hallway and additional room is nearly pitch black. Yeah, of course it sets up the drama, but it's funny.
2- How does Jack have so much cooperation from the people who work inside CTU. It seems he beats the shit out of or knocks out nearly as many friendly cops and security guards and field agents as he does terrorists. I'm surprised there are not more grudges with him :lol
Oh, and maybe they will just leave Jack alone for the boat ride over, and he can get plenty of sleep on the way. When they told him "you're far too valuable to kill" it reminded me of exactly the plot line of "The Last Samurai." Anyone else? Haha, imagine, they befriend Jack and he becomes on of them, fighting their terrorists.
Oh yeah, another point that may have been brought up back in Season 4, this Chinese dude who's been doing all the talking to Jack, he was the Chinese consul in Rush Hour :lol
Junior, I, and some others, also thought lightly after the news of his contract that it was some giant conspiracy to just kill Jack at the end of this season and have it be even more shocking, so I definitely had that in the back of my mind towards the end.
By the way, I was watching "Best Week Ever" on Vh1 the other day and they started to talk about 24, so I had to change the channel. They were saying "this season was looking like it was going to be the best yet, until..." and that's the last I got. What was that about?
Anyway, I'm with you all on being lost til January. I never really "had a show" that I just had to watch like I have with this one. Who knows, maybe in a few months I'll feel like watching them all over again, but not now, it's too soon. I look forward to actually being on track and able to watch Season 6 episodes when they are aired, thus being able to stay in this thread!
Woo!!! :twenty4

Any news on S5 on dvd?
I would put my hard earned cash on sometime in December. They've done that the past two years. They'll release the DVDs about a month or so before the new season comes out giving people a chance to catch up on the show.
My money is on December 5 (which is a Tuesday). Nothing official yet, though the official press release for Prison Break just came out, so maybe in the coming weeks we'll have an official date.

Just watched S2 straight through took me about a week and all I can say is WOW!!!
I just started watching 24 this season at 8pm haha :)
Only thing I can say after S2 is over is that I want David Palmer to be our President!!! Heck let's just get Dennis to run if he is President like he is in the show then I would vote for him in a heartbeat!
Oh my favorite part in S2 is when Jack runs up the stadium wall and breaks that dudes neck!
And best quote! When Jack tells Kim to shoot Meghan's dad in the chest. WHOA! INTENSE!!!! I LOVE IT!

Here's a nice little blurb from sun-sentinel.com about the movie:
Will the big screen give Jack Bauer his biggest bad day yet?
20th Century Fox and the producers of "24" have signed a deal to make a film version of the counterterrorism exploits of special agent Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). Sutherland wants to reprise his favorite role, but the deal is not final yet, his publicist said.
"24's" executive producer Howard Gordon said he would work on the project with the show's co-creators, Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow, who will write the script. "It will follow along the continuum of Jack's life but won't be tied to the TV show narratively," Gordon said. The film would probably shoot after the sixth season -- which begins airing in January -- in locations outside of L.A., such as London, Gordon said.
But don't worry: You won't have to spend an entire day in a theater to get the whole story. The film will abandon the show's real-time clock, so all of the action won't take place in a 24-hour period.
"We felt too constrained by it and we realized one day that Jack Bauer was such a strong character that he could fill the big screen," Gordon said.
For his part, Sutherland has been saying for months that he'd love to spend even more time in Jack's shoes.
"I think there's always a way to actually deal with the idea of '24' as a film that would completely be separate from '24' the television show," he said at a news conference in January. "And by that I mean the characters could be different. They could be completely unrelated, and I think that would still be effective."

its interesting i read that it would probably take place between s6 and s7, so no luck for dead characters coming back or for a prequel or something

Has anyone else seen this 24 Magazine that's out right now? I just happened to notice it the other day in the grocery store. Damn thing's $7! So on my lunch break at work I walked down to Borders and started reading it. Good interesting stuff. It's all new, as in written after the end of season 5, so there are a lot of good interviews and information about Season 6. I only got a few pages into it, so that's what I'll be doing the next few shifts.

Some of this may have been covered already...
I read that there's a strong possibility of a lot of the next season to be filmed in England. They wanted to do like 6 episodes last season there, to tell another story, but didn't (obviously). Or they might do a "dvd prequel" filmed in London, which sounds like something cool. They just said England and Japan really want to work with them. A lot of the filming still in LA.
I read what I think was some about them possibly coming back to Kim later on, they just wanted the last meeting of them to be really rough and uncomfortable.
I still only got through those first few pages. I'll share more after the next time I read.
FYI if the mag gives anything away about plot details, it has to be considered a spoiler, and must be put in the tags. :)

Not really a spoiler, but it does mention possibilities for next season (nothing confirmed), but I'll put it in tags just in case. (I'm die hard (don't watch previews for next week) and I had no qualms about reading this)
Supposedly they're going to focus more on Jack evading pursuit/capture more and stray from the save the day/stop the terrorists plot lines.

I think it sounds great as it will open many doors in terms of new characters, new scenarios, new threats, etc. They can finally stop playing the mole card, or the chemical weapon card, or someone working for the government that obviously never went through a background check.

Great, now if they'll also stop the "captured-hostile-with-demands-for-information" game. Every time they get someone with information I just hatehow it's the same damn thing: "I want full-immunity, signed by your president, and travel to a foreign country."
I read the rest of that magazine or most of it. Nothing really spoiling anything in there, just cool interviews and sections. It was apparently the second issue of it. The next one comes out August 8 or 18th I think.

Yeah I was watching it this past weekend with my friend who'd never watched it, trying to get him into it. It was earlier in the season, when they were having the auto guy drill the canisters, and Jack and Curtis break into that guy's penthouse who's holding the 15yr old girl... anyway, there was one on right after it and I was looking forward to it, but it was a few episodes later

THE "PALMER FAMILY" UNITES AS REGINA KING AND DB WOODSIDE CLOCK IN FOR SEASON SIX OF "24"
Released by FOX
As 24's "Day 6" approaches, the cast continues to assemble, with Regina King ("Ray") and DB Woodside (24's "Wayne Palmer") joining last season's most Emmy-nominated series as series regulars in season six. The clock will reset for 24 in January, Mondays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
After last season's shocking assassination of beloved President Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), the Palmer Family now comes together with the addition of King as Palmer's sister "Angela," a powerful advocacy lawyer, and the return of Palmer's strong-minded brother "Wayne" (Woodside) as the recently elected President.
King is best known for her roles in "Jerry Maguire" and the Academy Award-winning "Ray," while Woodside has earned recognition for his recurring role on 24.

Just wanted to post this thought, after watching some episodes on tv right now. Season 3 is definitely way up there in the top one or two of my favorites. And one of my favorite moments is when they do the exchange, Saunders' daughter for Michelle, and Jack chases Steven, then they call in air support and the fighter jets come through and blast that chopper to shit.
Followed in the next episode by the moment when Jack threatens to send Jane into the hotel with the virus, that's one of the more intense moments!
I gotta start from season 1 again, but I'm afraid to get readdicted to it!!!

The Unit = :thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup Very well done show. I've watched about the first six episodes and I'm going to watch the rest before the season premiere. Dennis Haysbert is the maaaaaan!! (As if you didn't know that already!)
Another great war/military show that never stood a chance was E-Ring. It had Benjamin Bratt and Dennis Hopper and was very very well done, but enough people didn't hop on and it got canned by NBC last spring. :shrug

Article from IMDB
Dennis Haysbert was furious when he found out that his character on 24, President David Palmer, was being assassinated and told producers he would refuse to tape the scene. The star argued over the storyline for months because he felt killing the president would send out a dangerous message to viewers. Haysbert appeared on US chat show The View yesterday where he explained how he left the show saying, "They did it as a stunt to get ratings and it worked. It started at the end of season four when I did the last six episodes. Then I thought I was done. I was right in the middle of the fourth episode I was doing when they called me up at lunch time to talk to me and said, 'Dennis, on the first show of next season, we're going to shoot you.' I said, 'Good luck with that. What's it going to be a CNN (news) report? Because I won't shoot it.' So we went back and forth and back and forth and the season ended and all during the summer the fellows kept calling and then they sent their mercenary, one of my best friends on the show, the show runner Howard Gordon, whom I love, and I have to tell you before I go any further that I love the guys on 24, both in front of the camera and behind it. We have a legacy of killing our leaders in this country and I said, 'Guys, don't do it.' Howard basically said, 'Dennis, look I understand how you feel. I believe you, I believe in what you're saying, but we need it to start the show, because without it, we don't have a season.'" Article from IMDB
I believe you, I believe in what you're saying, but we need it to start the show, because without it, we don't have a season.'" Haysbert eventually gave in and went on to star in the TV series The Unit about a top secret United States Special Operations Force.
wow thats really interesting. i wish they wouldnt have left things so strained with haysbert though, cuz he was so great on the show. im happy he has his own show now, but i wonder if this means haysbert wont sign on to do the movie if its a prequel like has been suggested

This isn't a spoiler, just some exciting info about the premiere dates etc.
24 Returns with Trailer, Four-Hour Premiere
Fox announced on Wednesday morning that Season 6 of 24, this year's most Emmy-adorned series, will kick off on Sunday, Jan. 14, and on Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, with a two-night, four-hour premiere. (Must. Rest. Brain. Cells.) An online countdown to 24's return commences today at www.24trailer.com, where an extended "Day Six" teaser will debut on Oct. 24, and the new season's first promo is set to air during Fox's coverage of the World Series' Game 3.

Haha, good thing this thread is stickied, or else it would have been lost on page three for the past two weeks!
I saw that article about the season premiere, same deal as last season, so no big surprise.
Truthfully, I'm on a "Lost"-high right now, so I better leave this thread before I start trying to decide which show is better... And avoid that one poll that asks the same question.

I can't imagine that season 6 is going to be better than season 5... season 5 was good I thought... better than season 4... but I think that the smaller plot where jack was just saving the president was a better plot than jack saving all the innocent people...... I mean.......... killing innocent people is bad and all but I'm not going to cry about it. saving palmer was much more interesting

I think the show is significantly better when it involves trying to decide between two evils, or letting someone die vs. committing an evil act.
Just think back to when he had to bring the gun to Palmer's assasin in Season One, or when he had to kill Chappelle in Season Three. These were amazing dilemmas and I would like to see more of them.

I agree. I also wish they would tone down the extravagance a little bit, as well. I really enjoyed the first season where the goal was to protect Palmer, the presidential candidate. With seasons 4 and 5, they just gave way to these massive plans and such, and it just got too big. I mean, S5 had some fantastic stuff, especially with some of the Robocop episodes, as well as the very beginning and very end. Some of the other shit, though, I mean, the airplane landing on highway was just ridiculous.

Yeah, that would be cool, although maybe they are saving that for the movie? (Remember after this season wraps they are moving onto the 24 film before season 7.) Another thing would be getting former cast members involved, namely Dennis Haysbert. If he were to be involved in the project it would be difficult due to The Unit, which is locked into CBS for at least another few seasons (good show by the way).
EDIT: Then again, Palmer was only being nominated for President in Season 1, so he probably wouldn't even be a factor.

at first i didnt like this either, but then there were some old episodes from season 3 on tv and i was paying attention to wayne and since he was davids campaign manager he was thinking of every move in terms of the voters. i think he def couldve ran a really clean campaign, appealed to voters (especially their emotions, what with david being killed), and maybe it couldve been a weak opponent. also he has a military record which we found out this season when he and jake went to save audrey.

Yes, Wayne is a smooth politician, I'm sure, but I woud've preferred to see someone else, but now we're still hung up on the David Palmer storyline a little, ya know?
Also, I believe the connection was that David Palmer was part of the secret Congressional committee that authorized Jack's attack. Anyone agree or disagree?
I had forgotten about "24-The Movie." It was pleasant to re-hear that news! Personally, I think that "24" and "Lost" are such kings of tv that it's a little cheesy to make a movie about it. Somehow.

I'm at the beginning of watching Season 3 again (got the S3 DVDs for X-Mas). January 8, 2007 - According to the CES 2007 trade paper Blu-ray Today, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release both the first seasons of its hit television shows 24 and Prison Break on Blu-ray Disc "early this year."
"With DVD, Fox was one of the last and most tentative but we are not tentative at all now," said Peter Staddon, executive vice president of marketing at Fox. "We're very aggressive with catalog rollouts and complete support of new releases. There is no comparison to the first six months of DVD with the amount of product on the marketplace."
No word on exact pricing or availability yet, but these two sets are definitely big releases for the Blu-ray format. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

( NO spoiler!!) update: alright i shoulda known this would happen, i watched all 4. the fourth episode is crazy, and now im punished by having to wait two weeks for ep 5. 24 is the best show of all time and theyre continuing the amazing quality of television programming theyve put out the last 5 years. not that ne doubted it would be another spectacular season, but im just reassuring you that is so far.

(No Spoilers) I've watched the first 4 eps and all I can say is you will not be disappointed. I don't know how this show does it but it continually gets better. The best show on TV just kicked its own ass. Enjoy.

I just started watching 24 on dvd this summer/fall and got finally got caught up a few weeks ago. Can't wait for the next season but I dunno if I can handle commercials and waiting a week for the next episode. 24 is the best show I've ever seen and Jack Bauer is the greatest tv character of all time.

Yeah, Season 5 was the first time I started watching the episodes when they originally aired. It's actually not as hard as you think it might be, but I suppose that will also depend on how gripping this season is so it maybe harder (although I thought season 5 was terrific).

How much will it hurt me to not have watched any of the seasons yet, but to start watching tomorrow?
Is this a show that I need to have seen all the way up until now?

It's not essential, but it's good to have the background info by watching the other seasons, and plus what would be a lot of surprises to new viewers if they watch it from the beginning.
But I can definitely see you being a fan of this show.

Yeah man! This time last year is when I became a fan. I'd never watched it, but my roommate was watching the season 5 premiere in the living room so I sat down and joined. I was hooked.
Anyway, I'm so excited, today is gonna go by slow, I'm working til 6, then driving to Atlanta to watch with my brother and some of his friends. Not sure how much I'll hang out in this thread though after today

OK, so let's discuss 24 thread etiquette here...
I'm under the assumption that we can discuss things that have happened in the show already (i.e. currently airing episodes or already aired) out in the open, yes?
But if we read up on things that are going to happen, but have not aired yet it gets the SPOILER tags?
And also, any theories or ideas that we've come up with on our own are for open discussion as well...?
Just want to get the etiquette rules clear because I remember some arguments in this thread last season. :lol
P.S. SO FUCKING PSYCHED OUT OF MY GORDE!

I can't believe another year of 24 is starting. I really feels like S5 just ended as I graduated.
I've been on the couch since the first hour of S1. It's really unbelievable to me that this is the 6th season of it. After S3 I was skeptical it wouldn't return. But now S...6? wooooo, here we go!
