I'm wondering how long a burned CD will last/is useable. I heard that most burned CD's have a life of about 7 years before they come unreliable. That being case, how does everyone plan to archive their shows? I have quite a few shows burned to CD and I want to know how long I can expect them to last...
Any ideas?
I imagine the life of the CD is dependant on the quality of the CD. TY's ( Taiyo Yuden ) are supposedly one of the best brands you can buy. Fuji's are Taiyo Yuden's. Basically when you buy CDs, look for "made in japan" and try to stay away from "made it taiwan".
But to answer your question, I don't know how long. Though at 1 point I did hear that Kodak made some CD that supposedly would last 100 yrs.

i don't think anyone really knows for sure ... i think its all just speculation, but it could come down to the quality of the die or the cd-r.
FYI ... fuji's are no longer TY ... check the package label

I thought I heard that not all fuji's are TYs but so far I haven't seen any that aren't....
damn, it's going to be such a pain to find "good" cds.
Speaking of which, I bought this 100 pk of memorex, I have had sooo much trouble w/ them. They are shit!
i use Princo and have never had a problem. i know i have burned close to 1000 of them.

the fuji 100pks @ BB are non-TY ... made in Taiwan ... i think the 50 pks are still TY just because they are probably older stock ... either way its always good to check the labels ... i've burned with almost all brands and really never had any major problems ... have used imation, memorex, fuji, generics, etc ... only burned a few coaster overall ... probably over 3000 cd's burned
more info on how long a cd-r will last can be found by searching google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=how+long+does+a+cd-r+last

also here is more on longevity: http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-5
just do a search online.
regarding the memorex, I don't make coasters, but sometimes they play, sometimes they don't. Same thing on many different CD players.... I think I just got a bad batch cause I have never had problems w/ memorex before

usually i think the life of a CD also depends on how much you use it. that can wear down the life of one i would think.

I've had a couple turn kinda yellowish on me. Haven't used them but 5-10 times. Only had 1 cd completely shatter while playing in my drive. Broke my drive so I had to get a new one. But it worked out ok. I was able to replace the cd and I got a 24x burner instead of a regular cd drive back from Dell:D

Best Buy (for what it's worth) usually has the 100 Pack Fuji's (TY) for $9.99 after a rebate, just make sure to get the ones with the label marked "MADE IN JAPAN/FABRIQUE AU JAPON." I personally use Kodak Ultima discs. I stocked up on these when I heard Kodak was no longer manufacturing these a couple of years ago. The Kodak Ultima and Kodak Gold cdrs are by far the best discs I have ever used.

Cool - thanks for the responses. Another question I have is this. Are any of you worried about your archived shows (on cd) eventually being lost (say 10-15 years down the road)? If so, any suggestions on a better media for archiving data?
