What kind does everyone here own? How much did you pay for it?Positives/negatives?

I've got an old Alvarez 5043 from the mid 70s. The sound on it is just amazing, the action is perfect...I love it.

Taylor 214 over here. I'm liking it a lot. I like the bass sound that it has, really makes me prefer Grand Auditoriums over Dreadnoughts. I paid about $800 with tax at Guitar Center, it was $750 before tax so I got about 25% off list.

Fender DG-10LH- Great guitar. The last strings I had on it (the ones that came with it) stayed in tune for 4 months. Basic dreadnought build, nice, simple. Medium bass-y sound...i like it.

Epi Chet Atkins SST- in the process of being heavily modified, this baby will boast Fishman Natural 2s (maybe 1s), a new finish, shaved neck, and then some nice pedals and wacky electronics when I get all done. When I got it, it had crappy electric strings and a crappy pickup. Right now, it has neither...

Ovation Celebrity LH - Cherry Stain Finish. $100 after trading in my Takamine. I love this guitar. Great action, electronics with built in tuner is nice to have too. My only problem with it is, I can't put the damn thing down so I go through string like a mad man! :p

Epiphone Les Paul LH - Starburst Top $499 Great electric sound, this guitar was hard to find being left-handed and all. I love the feel of this guitar, but as all Les Paul's the damn thing is heavy. I mean real heavy.

Fender DG-10CE, got it for about $300 about 4 years ago. If I ever start saving up, I'd like to get something in the $1500 range.

Martin D-15: This guitar owns me. Personally I think it's the best bang for the buck in the $500-$1000 range, and I got it for $700.00 flat with a case. Sound gets better with age, and a nice new pair of Elixir Lights complete it. My only problem is the strings go dead very fast since I never put it down.

Fender Squier D-6: My first one that I played for 8 months, as a Christmas present. Probably a couple hundred. The action is way too high, and the strings are kind of cheap and extremely worn down, but I use it to play in strange tunings once in a great while.

I have a Washburn WD40 that I got as a gift. I think it cost aroung $200... I bought my second guitar, a Martin JC-15E, for $850. My 3rd guitar is a Taylor 814CE-LTD (fall 2001 limited) with Brazilian rosewood sides and back. It was a gift from my dad. I think he paid $2900 for it. My latest guitar is an Alvarez AJ-60SC-12. I paid $460 for it without a case (the case was $90).

The positives and negatives of each.....
well the Washburn is a laminate top so it has a rather cardboard like sound. The action is great but the neck is really thick,

I like the Martin alot. I probably play it the most. It has a nice rich sound and and great action (after i shaved the saddle down alittle)

What can I say about the Taylor. WOW!!! It is too nice for me, The action is awesome. the sound is awesome. The only thing i didnt like about it was the elixer strings that came on it. They seemed to make it sound alittle thin to me. I put some Martin SP's on it and it sounds really sweet.

And finally the Alvarez... It has a great sound unplugged. Crisp highs and rich lows... the down side is that when it is plugged in, it sounds like a tinny piece of crap... damn piezo... i am working on an internal mic to blend the piezo with so that it sounds better. Only other complant is that that the neck is alittle thick. I guess that is pretty normal with 12 strings though.

Anyway thats my stash...

johnson jg-610 redburst...got it for $75 on ebay...only problem I have is that I'd like to get a different guitar with a new body style. I like mine, which is a dreadnaught...but i wouldn't mind something else for a change...

bought it from my brother. hard case and guitar all for 400- so i don't really know how much it was.

i use elixir- medium gauge strings.

positive- solid sound. sturdy guitar- strings are seperated really well.
negative- aesthetics really- i wish the neck finished with a head that widens[like the J's guitar a few posts up], not narrows. oh well :)

I've got a Larrivee D-05. Everyone that plays this baby loves it. I payed $765 with $30 shipping to total around $800. This thing reatails for about $1700 and has a street price of $1000-1100.

I don't get it why people buy Martins or Taylor's for 5, 6 and 700 dollars that aren't even an all solid wood guitar when they could get one made by larrivee or Tacoma that is all solid wood for a better price. I'm not knocking Taylor or Martin, but it's their top of the line guitars that they are known for. If you are going to get a guitar with a solid top and plywood back and sides get a seagull s6 and shell out $300 instead of $700.

You can land a Larrivee D-03 for about $600 and anything in that price range from Taylor or Martin is just blown out of the water, excluding the D-15 from Martin but only if you want an all mahogony guitar.

Sorry for the rant, heres my guitar:

What's a decent electric guitar at a good price? Also, a side note:What guitar did Tim play at Live in Chicago?

Dancing Ants
10-30-2003, 12:13 AM
Tim played a Gibson Les Paul of some sort on LiC. A "decent" electric guitar would be a Fender American Telecaster, purchaseable at Guitar Center for just under $700.

What's your opinion of this puppy? I'm looking at getting a 12 string and have only played a couple... Washburn and Taylor.

Although I did have a dream last week that I had a double neck acoustic jammer that was wicked good. Ahhhhh.... to dream.

Lakewood D1.

Lakewoods are overlooked by pretty much everyone looking for a 'higher end' guitar. All the Lakewood models that I've played sound incredible, and compare to Taylors and Martins.

The only thing abotu Lakewoods that could be troubling for some people is that the wood used is very thin, which could result in warping. But, if you just take care of your guitar (LIKE YOU SHOULD ANYWAY) it won't be a problem.

I love it, its an older model, from 1980, still an awesome guitar. I love the Washburn Cumberland 12 string, and i am going to get a taylor 355, that is the sweetest 12 string. I'd like a Taylor W65, but I dont see that in my budget anytime soon.

Another one you may want to check out is the new Fender GD-47S12. It is a dreadnought, solid spruce top, solid rosewood back and sides, grover tuners. its a very nie guitar. I would tell everyone to go try Fender's new GA line especially the GA-43 and GA-45, they make cutaway models for both the GA-43 and GA-45.

haha no you cant.

Mahogany and Rosewood are very different sounds. The D-18v is a very different guitar from the others. The D-35 was my first, it's a gig guitar and roadworn. The D-42 is a cadillac, the best woods and I record with it. It's a beautiful instrument.

awesome. it's nice to get an inside look on the guitars people choose for serious stuff. i did realize there were differences, but since i'm new to guitar it's tough to see what's an extravagant purchase and what's a useful purchase. it's too bad i can't have one.
