looking forward to this one... I fully expect an Illini thrashing due to the lack of respect and problems up when they played at NW. :bounce super jacked, today... I think just scored tickets to the regionals at Allstate Arena in Chicago. :monkey

I live near ABQ NM aka. the PIT :D just went to a game on monday there. UNM beat UTAH and let me tell you. It lives up to its reputation of being the loudest court in the country. 2 hours of that 18,000 fans yelling and i couldnt hear anything until the next morning. Im gonna try and get some tickets for the qualifying stuff going down there.

Funny story about Sumpter and Fraser. They played on the same AAU team in high school and Fraser was the big time recriut, a McDonald's All-American and he told schools recruting him that the only way he'd sign with them is if they gave Sumpter a scholarship too. Now Sumpter is the one tearing it up whole Fraser has had injury problems through his whole college career.

John that's a great point. It got ugly at the Dean Dome... but the Terps play well at home and play like world beaters with their back against the wall. Either way if the Terps lose this one, the season finale with VT just got a whole lot bigger.

Winner goes to the NCAA... loser goes to the NIT.

if they go into the ACC tourney, and play Virginia, G. Tech, and Duke, that's about their only shot of making the NCAA tourney without winning out the rest of the reg. season.

I work for UMD, and the thought around campus is if we lose to Carolina and UNC we have to win the ACC to get in the NCAA. A loss to both puts us sub-.500 in the conference, with VT, Duke, Wake, UNC, Miami and possibly GT and NC State ahead of us. The ACC won't get 8 teams in. 6 tops... and I think 5 is more like it.

Tech will get more thought from the selection people than Maryland. They had 1 loss before BJ Elder went out. He's back now, though not 100%. Being the National Runner-up's last year, with the same team back, and now close to full strength, i think they'll get the benefit of the doubt if it's between them and someone else. just my opinion......

It's all good that Ga Tech were national runners up, except that they got their ass beat almost as bad as UNLV spanked Duke in '90. So I don't think that will get them much consideration from the commitee this year; in fact it may hurt them when you combine it with their season this year. Marykand is putting together some pretty good quality wins late, that will get them consideration for the tourney especially since they weren't supposed to be much at preseason.

they are 3-3 in Feb. with losses to NC State, Clemson, and Miami. their wins are against Duke, Va Tech, and Virginia. they've played six games, and only one of those teams are a lock for the tournament, hardly what i'd call quality wins late.

Very true, but looking at past years a team that is 16-9 right now is probably a tourney team. And they haven't been "blown out" to often this season.

If they go .500 in the ACC they're in. Only 3 teams out of 53 since the tourney went to 64 teams have not made the dance with a .500 record. Now... drop both and go sub-.500 and you're basically f'd.

they will look kindly on Gary Williams though, who is one of the most respected coaches in the game. He has paid his dues....extra slack is cut-out for embassador's of the college game. When push comes to shove, the NCAA is corrupt because of the way it markets itself, only caring about what money is in it for them....with ignoring more important things, like keeping their product(s) happy and secure with consistent rules and expectations...... and that would certainly play into the fact why the sport is losing out on top athletes and competition. Every tournament game, every tournament team is about how much money the NCAA can make off it.... of course, they are gonna want the people and teams that can sell it best.

true, they HAVE to beat Va Tech. assuming they lose to UNC, beating Va Tech will put them at 17-10, 8-8. If they lose both games, they need to win at least two in the ACC tournament to have a shot. the overall strength of the conference will help them, but being sub .500 with more than a couple of bad losses won't help them come selection sunday.

I agree with all of this. However two things 1) Gary Williams will be given extra consideration because he's proven he can win in the tourney, and 2) Even though the NCAA is dispicable as an organization there's nothing quite like the first weekend of the tourney. :D

they have tickets around the 50 yard line and since ya'll have never been to the dome all we do is section off 1/2 the football field and apply the hard wood. we have a blue curtain that acts as the "wall" anything behind that is like outer space seats, and that's where they have tickets. so id rather watch it at home then from there

best weekend in sports no doubt, certainly doesnt mean it couldnt be even better.... that's a whole 'nother thread though, I'll save it for the off-season talk. The tournament will always be great because of the upsets and the drama, but when the best athletes and highschool ballers head to the NBA and sit on the bench the whole game, rather than being a big man on campus....there's somthing wrong. Is it player's greed, or the way the NCAA handles its business??? Why can a coach leave when ever he damn well pleases, but a player has to sit-out at least a year?? Who gives a shit if these student athletes have a job?? The problems just keep on getting bigger and the NCAA continues to be blind.

Yeah I know. Try face value ($40 a piece), championship game, 100 level. About 5-10 minutes after the game started saw an older couple (Ohio St fans) that couldn't find a parking space so they sold us thier tickets. I have to admit I resold them instead of going. As soon as I turned around there was a guy offering $550 a piece, and I had a table reserved in front of a movie size screen to see the game.

good thing Wash. St. isn't going to the tournament this year. They aren't a great team but they hold teams to so few points that if they even get slightly hot from behind the arc they can beat you. At least, UA escaped with a win tonight. It was bad enough losing once when we hadn't in 14 years, twice in a row would have been really ugly.

So if you haven't seen how Duke's bench gets thinner and thinner every week here's the latest. From ESPN.com.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke guard Sean Dockery is out indefinitely because of a knee injury sustained Wednesday night in a victory over Georgia Tech.

Dockery, who played in Duke's first 24 games, tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, the school announced Thursday.

When my 24 hours are up I've got some rep points to spread around this thread. You all deserve them, and I gotta love that I get to give 5 at a time.

yeah, i saw that last night. sucks for the Dukies. Coach K has already worked wonders with a short bench this season, without Melchioni (sp?) playing more consistently it'll be a miracle job if they advance to the final four this year. good luck to you.

i'm not to worried about them right now. he's on a cold streak that can't last forever. better now then in the tournament. it they run the offense through Simien, he'll get better looks and they'll start falling. as far as UNC and KU in the same bracket, i wouldn't worry. the tounament people don't want that game until the Final Four. I take it you are not 6'8" 270 then. That's about the only way you could survive watching that game anywhere near Chapel Hill. Some of the Jayhawks outside shooters need to step up so the offense can be run through Simien without having three guys collapse on him each posession.

Ive never seen a player's skill level drop so quickly.... ever since he's had up to 10 NBA scouts watching him at every game, he's been far far to erratic and sloppy......He got back on his game on Monday night against Oklahoma, the end result was still the same........the problem with the Jayhawks is they can't pass (way too many turnovers) and they cant grab offense rebounds, especially without Moody. Giddens can certainly provide a spark, but this team will only go as far as their seniors take them.

And when Pitt did get the foul they didn't do a real good job converting. Especially towards the end (only making 5 out of the last 15 fouls shots)

:thumbsup I agree. I don't think history is a very good defense against current events in sports. If that was the case, UCLA fans would always be bragging about the John Wooden days, even though they're horrible. "Hey we may suck, but the 60's sure were awesome." *kansas has lost in two weeks what kentucky has lost all year.
*kentucky has the #17 ranked scoring defense in division 1. kansas isn't top 50.
*kentucky is #9 in division 1 in margin of victory, kansas is way lower.

that's bound to happen when the only two teams that are worth a damn are playing each other.;)

The pac 10 gets a lot worse rep than they disserve (this rep is of course due to their geography so consequently a lack publicity). They had the second highest RPI in pre-conference play (the only conference with a higher RPI was ACC). Besides USC and Cal every team in the Pac 10 can be a dangerous team any given day (yes even WSU, they did beat Arizona in Tucson).

see, where you go wrong with that is both of those teams are better then S. Carolina (who Kansas beat). with the KU/UK argument, you really need to stay away from specific teams played and RPI, etc.. because it's no contest. The way to argue how kentucky is better then Kansas is to use statistics on defense, free-throw shooting, and assist/turnover ratio. if you're feelin' froggy you can also go to the "our freshmen aren't freshmen anymore" card and discuss who's playing better down the stretch. A case can be made for a lot of teams being better than Kansas and Kentucky but you have to know the strengths and weaknesses of each argument before you get forced into the "yeah, but remember Adolph Rupp and that team back in..........."

What's important going into the tournement isn't your body of work but how you've played in the last month. The selesction committee uses body of work (as they should). SC isn't as good as the teams KU has lost to recently but we dropped one game on the road. Sometimes teams don't show up on a night. KU hasn't shown up for 2 weeks now. Yes you beat us in the middle of January, but we're playing better ball now. If the regular season was that important, people would be talking us up all over the place because of the last 2 years.

And that's why we don't do it by RPI. Pitt as a 13 seed? Yeah... that'll happen.

For all the Jayhawk fans I know it's difficult, but let's be honest with yourselves. KU is an above average team. But they're not special. They're not outstanding. They're not one of the five best. And they're certainly not worthy of a one seed. Teams stumble through the year. Case in point: Duke at VT, UK at South Carolina, etc. But the nation's elite teams don't drop three straight at the end of February. Kansas should just hope and pray they get a two seed.

settle down sparky......didn't say i agreed with it, just thought it was interesting to look at. if you backread just a little, you'll find that i've been laying out reasons why Kentucky is better than Kansas right now. nowhere will you find that i think KU deserves a #1 or a #2 seed. The thing that makes me think they will is that Tubby is a March coach and they don't have a go to guy where if you shut him down you beat them. Any one of the starters could drop 25 on you. Plus they, along with a a very few other teams (carolina, duke, maybe kansas) just always find a way to win. Look at the Louisville game and the bama game from yesterday. Some will bring up the unc and kansas game, but the uk team today is very different than the one from december.

How many final fours has mr March Coach made at UK? One, with Pitino's team. I mean I like Tubby, but I don't think I'd call him a march coach.... if anything lately they've looked damn good coming into march and then fallen on their faces.

I picked 10 teams that I knew had done well in the tounament over the last 5 years and dropped the ones that hadn't made it all 5 years (looked like UConna and UNC both sat out a year) here's what I came up with. If I got anything wrong I apologize. I did this by looking at the old brackets so I may have made a mistake.

Wins:
Duke 16
Kansas 15
Maryland 14
Michigan St. 13
Arizona 11
Kentucky and OK St. 9
Gonzaga 6

Sweet 16's or better:
Duke 5
UK, KU, Zona, Michigan St., Maryland 3
OK St., Gonzaga 2

E.E. or better
Mich. St 3
OK ST., Maryland, Zona, Duke, KU 2
UK 1
Zaga 0

FF or Better:
Duke, KU, Mich. St., Maryland 2
Zona, OK ST. 1
UK, Zaga 0

Runner Ups
Kansas, Zona

Championships
Michigan St., Marlyand, Duke

I will again say Tubby isn't a March coach. I'm not one of those fans, I'm a realist.
