i had Kansas, Syracuse, and Georgia Tech. after the first session of games friday afternoon, i was 23-1 in my ESPN bracket. it went in the shitter very fast after that.
I've been too scared/embarrassed to check the ESPN bracket.

The good, the bad and ugly of opening weekend
March 21, 2005
By Gregg Doyel
SportsLine.com Senior Writer
It's not time to give out the national championship -- although it's tempting, North Carolina -- but CBS SportsLine.com has plenty of NCAA Tournament awards to dole out, based on the first two rounds.
B.J. Elder's season was a total disappointment. (Getty Images)
Some of the recipients won't be pleased. Typical. Nothing's ever good enough, is it?
NBA stock rising: NBA scouts already liked Louisville guard Francisco Garcia. Two games into the tournament, they've got to love him. Garcia is starting to look like a guy who has wandered into the wrong gym. He's too good for everyone here.
NBA stock falling: Kansas' J.R. Giddens and Nevada's Nick Fazekas announced they won't enter the 2005 NBA Draft. Meanwhile, I'm announcing I won't enter the 2005 Mr. Universe competition.
Best performance in a losing effort: Disintegrating Boston College lost a game it should have won, but don't blame Jared Dudley for that 83-75 defeat to Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dudley had 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Worst performance in a winning effort: Anything's possible now, but Wisconsin takes the least impressive tournament resume into the Sweet 16, having beaten Northern Iowa 57-52 and Bucknell 71-62.
Worst performance, period: Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt routinely wonders why senior B.J. Elder doesn't get more credit. This is why: Elder had three points in the Jackets' second-round loss to Louisville, a sadly typical performance for one of the streakiest players in college basketball.
Best coach: Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Bruce Pearl and North Carolina State's Herb Sendek got consideration, as did Bucknell's Pat Flannery and Vermont's Tom Brennan, but the pick here is West Virginia's John Beilein. Two weeks ago his Mountaineers were an NIT team. Now they're in the Sweet 16, and capable of going farther.
Worst coach: Kansas should never lose to Bucknell, Bill Self. Never.
Better get better: Oklahoma State All-American Joey Graham has 16 points in two NCAA Tournament games. With Graham at his best, the Cowboys probably aren't big enough to surpass last season's Final Four showing. With Graham averaging eight points per game, Oklahoma State will have no chance.
Can't get better: With or without Graham, Ivan McFarlin will do what he can. The OSU senior posted the highest-scoring game of the tournament with 31 points in the second round against Southern Illinois. In two games, McFarlin is averaging 24.5 ppg and shooting 78.3 percent.
Best league (big surprise): Trashed all season, the Big Ten advanced 60 percent of its NCAA Tournament teams (three of five) into the Sweet 16.
Worst league (no surprise): Trashed all season, the SEC advanced 20 percent of its NCAA Tournament teams (one of five) into the Sweet 16.
Most puzzling: Syracuse's bench was short three players -- three! -- for the Orange's opening-round loss to Vermont, and coach Jim Boeheim didn't help matters any. He declined to address the futures of troubled junior Billy Edelin and freshman busts Josh Wright and Dayshawn Wright. Of the three, only Josh Wright accompanied the team to Worcester, Mass., but he wasn't at the game. Question: If neither Wright shows up next season, will anyone notice?
Best liar: After Duke beat Mississippi State to reach the Sweet 16, coach Mike Krzyzewski acted like it was no big deal that he had just become the tournament's all-time victory leader with 66. No big deal, though he had just passed Dean Smith. No big deal. No big deal. Sorry, we're just trying to be as convincing as he was.
Worst liar: We have no idea what really caused those superficial injuries to Boston College's Jermaine Watson. But we'd bet our weekly salary -- OK, we'd bet your weekly salary -- that he didn't dive through any window trying to avoid a pounding. Come on, Jermaine. You're a senior. You can do better than that.
Biggest sweetheart: After beating Gonzaga to reach the Sweet 16, Texas Tech coach Bob Knight gave a public declaration of gratitude to wife, Karen. Very nice.
Biggest jerk: Incapable of merely enjoying his team's Sweet 16 moment, Bob Knight later went on a national radio show and leveled Indiana coach Mike Davis -- saying he would have fired Davis had he been kept at Indiana for one more season. At least that's what The Ensign says he told his son, Brat.
Best bracket: Yours.
Worst bracket: Mine.

Yeah, he needs to use some of that athleticism and start taking the ball to the hole. I watched him play a lot in high school (even got schooled by him in a pick up game) and he loved taking the ball to the rim. Now all he does is stand around the 3 point line. He has a huge upside but just needs to find his game

that's the problem. it has nothing to do with the seeds as much as it has to do with who it was. the only thing i can remember that's close is UNC / Weber St. and Princeton beating UCLA in the first round when they were defending national champs. none of the #15 / #2 games were that big.
Well, #2 Syracuse losing to #15 Richmond in 1991 was just as bad. It was just wrong.

No bitching from I. They are definitely the most impressive thus far.
But I m REALLY happy that a lot isnt expected of Duke. This whole season was supposed to be their "worst since 1995". And everytime theyve been predicted to not do well, they tend to prove everyone wrong. So that actually makes my heart happy that nothing much is expected of them.

The thing about Bob Knight doesn't suprise me...he has always been a jerk and will forever be one. Boy, but the man can coach basketball...T Tech beat Gonzaga because he just outcoached them. And from a Sooner, Let's go O State! and if not O State then LET'S GO DUKE! Gotta love JJ and Coach K and my Oklahoma boy Sheldon

Just got back from hospital in intensive care all weekend, the doctors label me as "stable", yet critical condition. I keep waking up with the replay of that Simien miss over and over.... I was one that had high expectations for this KU class with what theyve done, only to be shot down with hopes of pulling something together with the hardware on the line.... what I am left with is the knowledge that this KU team/class was overrated to begin with, a team that had no energy or courage to right their ship when they were tested with adversity. Its easy to blame Self, and I will... he needs to take a good look in the mirror with what he is doing with this program.

Hypocrite -- Yes. When you talk all the UK smack about them winning it all and then you abandon them with your picks. What kind of fan are you???
Maybe you need to grow your hair out (butch) and perhaps boys will actually talk to you. I guess that explains a lot of your aggression in this thread. My wife seems to agree with me on this.
I've been here every time (once) that the Illini have lost. You, on the other hand, never seem to be around when Jelly loses. Pretty typical of what we've seen from you.
Again, yet another childish response from someone who needs to learn how to have a discussion.

this tournament is all about "survive and advance." while they are plenty of teams that are better than some of the ones left (save it, i know), what it comes down to is the teams that are still playing got the job done. the ones that didn't are at home. there's a reason the games aren't played on paper.

i love soccer as much as the next euro, but single elimination is what makes the tourney so great (this coming from someone who suffered the worst defeat in school history friday night). if the NCAA tourney used round-robin in the Pool format and took the teams with the best record from each pool as they do in the World Cup, the upsets by Bucknell, Vermont, UAB, etc. wouldn't mean shit. they would win that game, celebrate, then get blown out their next three games and go home anyways. they aren't playing for the opportunity to go to the Final Four, their joy comes from ruining someone else's season.

That was actually a quote that someone else left for me.
Yeah SU played pretty piss poor against Vermont. I still don't know what the issue was. I think that the fact that three players weren't at the game had something to do with it. I know Jimmy B said "that is an excuse losers make" but that has to weigh on the team a little bit. The latest word out of Syracuse (or at least the rumor) says that Billy Edelin had failed an NCAA random drug test and that is why he hasn't been playing.

I'm done until I can cheer for 'Nova on Friday or we find out what the problem was with Billy Edelin, Josh Wright and Dayshawn Wright. My guess is that it will be the Dome on Friday at 7:30.
As an aside, the dome screwed up their fliers that they sent out to the other schools explaining the different services that they have in Syracuse. One of the things was taxi services, the listed the wrong phone number for one of the companies and actually listed one of the private lines for my company.

That's an interesting one. I would assume that it would be a smaller school from a small conference that has had a team since the begining of the NCAA tournament. No one really stands out in my mind.

-boring day one
-boring day two (until vermont and bucknell happened)
-Julie made an appearance(hurray!), a very short one predictably, some filth about we'll "shit a brick when UK wins it all" or something, and Illinois doesn't look very impressive (though I'm not sure what was impressive about jelly's victory over east-jelly...)
-everyone went ape-shit on here while watching the Wake Forest/WVU game
-some big-10 prostitute came on trying to hate on the superior ACC
-eventually, seekupig showed back up and we were all happy to know he was indeed alive
-there was a debate about Coach K being a "whiny bitch" or not, and I was surprised how many non-dukies stuck up for him
-following Sunday, I pointed out how the Triangle area is the Center of the Basketball world, as we have 3 schools in about a 25 mile radius in the sweet 16 (this is all still true :D)

Very true, but in their defense, they live and die through hoops. That's all they have. Had it been football I would have been in the same boat they were in. I was very disappointed in OU's tourney loss, but not nearly as much as I am in a football loss, even in the regular season. I was in the same state as the Kansas crew after the Orange Bowl.

no doubt about learning to throw... but that's an issue for the pro's.... if he had be QB when Roy Williams was at Texas... then yea.. he'd need to learn to throw... but look at what Crouch did at Nebraska without ever learning to throw a pass. and Vince is 100000000 times better runner than that cornhusker douche bag. you can be a very effective QB in college with your legs....

I don't think Vince Young is a better runner than Eric Crouch. Eric Crouch had a great 40 time (4.45 i think) and anyone recall his 105 yard gallop against Mizzou? I have seen Vince Young in person two times at the Red River Shootout and I was never really impressed. The Sooners were caught a little off guard by his runner skills in the 65-13 mashing but made adjustments and dared him to throw....which he couldn't. Last year, they gave him his choice and he couldn't do either. He is an incredible athlete for sure, but I am not so sure Vince Young can cut it in the NFL unless he learns how to throw a football

No offense, but it's to bad for you that the only thing anyone in here cares about the NIT is the fact that ND, Temple, and Clemson lost in the first round, and Maryland feels like it got burned.
Now back to your usually scheduled Wednesday trash talking thread. Too bad there isn't a MSU fan in here so I could bring back all those feelings of dejection from all those ACC/Big X challenge losses.

I'm very disappointed. We are getting the Illinois-Milwaukee game tomorrow instead of the Louisville-Washington game because CBS has decided that they will get better ratings for the Illinois game here since all the OSU fans will have an interest in seeing who their opponent will be if they win. While this may be true, it sucks. The Louisville-Washington game should be a great game.

No offense, but it's to bad for you that the only thing anyone in here cares about the NIT is the fact that ND, Temple, and Clemson lost in the first round, and Maryland feels like it got burned.
I guess that's what happens when people care about overrated and overhyped teams.

Its understandable to be concerned because any team can lose on any night in March, but I think the real game to be a little worried about will be the next one. The Illini should roll tonight.
I'm so glad that the Washington vs. Louisville and Ok. State vs. Zona games are on at different times tonight.

it's tough right now. there are teams i like but it depends on the matchups. i like OSU against UNC, but not Duke. I like Illinois against Duke, but not UNC. the matchups go on and on like that for me. for reasons other than the basketball game itself there are certain teams who i think will fare better given the right circumstances and matchups. if i have to pick one right now though, it'll be Oklahoma St.

I was bored sitting in management class and came up with All-American and All-Conference teams for the BCS conferences. I could have easily overlooked some people because I had no stats or anything in front of me, but there you go. Big East was the toughest conference.
All-American 1st Team
PG-Paul
SG-Stoudamire
SF-Warrick
PF-Simien
C-Bogut
2nd Team
PG-Felton
SG-Brown (he hasn't been the PG in the Illini offfense this year)
SF-Redick (he starts at the 3 for Duke)
PF-Diogu
C-May
3rd Team
PG-D.Williams
SG-Head
SF-Garcia
PF-Graham
C-S.Williams
ACC
PG-Paul
SG-Redick (because he is a natural SG)
SF-Hodge
PF-May
C-S.Williams
Big 10 (no traditional lineup, but I can't think of it any other way)
G-Brown
G-D. Williams
G-Head
F-Grier
F-Wilkinson
Big 12
PG-Lucas
SG-Stinson
SF-Gray
PF-Graham
C-Simien
Pac 10
PG-Robinson
SG-Stoudamire
SF-Thompson
PF-Diogu
C-Frye
Big East
PG-M.Williams
SG-Ray
SF-Warrick
PF-Smith
C-Gomes (a PF, but both are deserving)

well, since OSU only has one white guy that sees the court and Stoudemire didn't know his name i don't have a problem with it. if they were interviewing a

I totally agree with you about what Stoudamire said about Bobik. The white guy would be a racist if its the other way. Kind of like that stupid movie with Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac. What a freakin' baby!!! The place was dump when I used to work there (early 90's). They've done some major renovations to the lobbies and replaced all the seats in there. I'm not sure about the locker rooms, but the place certainly took a step up as far as I'm concerned. Sure, it's no United Center, but they have to spread some of these regionals around and looks like DePaul got to host it.

easy, i've only seen it from the outside when i was up there, from what i've heard this regional was actually supposed to be here in okc, but scheduling problems okc forfited (sp?) and the ncaa switched depaul's bid from 1 & 2 rounds to this. take it easy on sutton, he's not the only one griping about the arena.

I reside in beautiful Mustang, Oklahoma.
And yeah, it was on the back page under the "OSU Notebook" section where it says "Thumbs Down" 4 from the bottom. It says: "Eddie Sutton said Allstate Arena, DePaul's home court, is the worst facility he's played in during his 26 NCAA Tournament appearances. It's Sutton's second trip to the arena formally known as Rosemont Horizon. The Cowboys split two games in an old-style classic in Sutton's first season at OSU. 'If they did $22 million of innovations, I don't know where they put it,' Sutton said.

They should be happy that they have a court to play on. These athletes and coaches aren't supposed to be on a whirlwind vacation. Play the games and shut up.

'If they did $22 million of innovations, I don't know where they put it,' Sutton said.
i'm south of earlywine park.
i missed the article then. thanks :thumbsup

No, but if the NCAA said we'll pack 18,000 in to see it and give you national exposure, I'd say "when's tipoff?" College athletes (and apparantly coaches) are getting a little to big for their britches.

SF-Warrick
PF-Simien
C-Bogut
:thumbsup Good overall picks, I'd have Diogu as PF but I might be a little Pac10 biased. Anyway much better than Duke Vitale's picks.

Mine is:
PG - Chris Paul
SG - JJ Redick
SF - Joey Graham
PF - Wayne Simien
C - Andrew Bogut
The All-you-piss-me-off team
PG - Chris Paul (potrayed as a saint but play like a chump)
SG - Karl Krauser (just hate his "blackshirts" srm symbol thing when he scores
SF - Adam Morrison (celebrates way way to much and talks a ton of trash)
PF - Terrance Crawford (just annoys me)
PF - Johnny Gilbert (love-hate type of thing. He works harder than anyone and I love his hustle, but the man has huge freakin lips and no skill)
Honorable mention:
Andrew Bogut (just cause Dan Bonner was kissin his nuts all game long while they whipped the Sooners)
JR Giddens (because he is O-V-E-R-A-T-E-D...and he is a cocky mofo)
Daniel Bobik (just don't like him)
Paul Davis (he looks like a robot)
Jason Klotz (is he Brian Boddicker brothers? They look like freakin elves)
Pitts whole team
Gerry McNamera (he spells Jerry with a G and people act like he is a freakin good shooter but he sucks)
Charlie Villanueva (where are his freakin eyebrows?)
Derek Raivio (is he a little rat playing basketball?)
Patrick Sparks (white trash, fat t-shirt wearing something)
Shane Power (h
