I think it was more part of the Illini playing sloppy at the end rather than UNC hanging with Illinois. Piss poor basics in the last 5 minutes of the game made it appear to be a close game.
Yes, but Illinois didn't score those 14 straight points at the end of the second half for the Tar Heels. Whether or not Illinois played sloppy, the Heels handled the pressure well and made some huge shots (especially Ginyard's leaning shot from the perimeter and Hansbrough's clutch free throws). Had they not given up that long rebound off the Illinois missed free throw, they could've won.

wrong- elite is just some random programs they think will sell more- wake was "elite" last year, we havent been to a final four since 64 i believe.
sorry. it started out that way when it was rolled out a few years ago. at the time i was managing a retail store that did 40% of it's business in licensed clothing. they may have changed it since then to take advantage of the flavors of the week, but when it started that's what it was for.

Can't wait for the Oklahoma-Villanova game this weekend. We get our first road game here in Tulsa tonight against the Golden Hurricane. It obviously won't compare to what we'll face in Philly Saturday, but it should provide a better test then what we've faced so far.

'Nova is overrated. The only way they could hang with UNC in the tournament last year was to throw their bodies at defenders every time they took a shot in hopes of getting fouled, and the refs fell for it. One of the most aggravating games I've ever watched.

I was at that game. 'Nova got screwed by the refs and should have won that game. And no, they aren't overrated. They are a ridiculously good team.

No way. Nova was IN that game because of the refs. They called a foul nearly every time Villanova took a shot, even when it was their own players who were initiating the contact. It may have been difficult to tell what was going on in person, but on television, it was blatantly obvious what they were doing.

I just thought I'd pull up the box score of that UNC-Nova game since we were discussing it...
UNC - 41.7 FG%, 42.1 3-Pt%, 79.2 FT%, 42 Total Rebounds, 11 Assists
Nova - 37.7 FG%, 28.6 3-Pt%, 63.2 FT%, 33 Total Rebounds, 7 Assists
Nova got outplayed.

they were down two with 6.9 seconds left, went length of the floor and dumped the ball off to CJ Giles under the basket. he went up and was absolutely hammered by the defense (couldn't even get his arms above his head) and there was no call. I loathe CJ Giles. While he was in high school he went on a radio show here in Seattle and says "I am 99 percent sure I'll be at the U-Dubb next year." A week later he was gone to Kansas.
Kurtis Townsend is the sleeziest recruiter in mankind's history. Nobody else found it sketchy that Mario Chalmers' dad got a job for the Jayhawks? Isn't there something wrong with that? Giles is driving a nice car these days... so is his dad.

It's like the OU fans that get pissed when Sheldon or JR leave for Duke or Kansas, but are happy as can be when a top football recruit leaves North Carolina or Kansas to come to Oklahoma. You can't get mad at kids for maximizing their opportunities.

If I was a high school player from the city of Seattle, I would go to Washington without question. It's the same reason Jon Brockman picked Washington over Duke. Same reason Spencer Hawes picked Washington over North Carolina. Washington is a budding basketball program with good fans in a good city.
Giles would have been a star here. Immediately. The one thing we lacked all last season was a post presence. We had a No. 1 seed in the tourney without anyone that could play down low, just Mike Jensen, a less-than-mediocre 6-7 forward and 6-5 Jamaal Williams. Giles would have played 30 minutes a game and could have gotten us further in the tourney.
And let's be honest... nobody wants to live in Kansas unless Townsend is funnelling money or a job in their direction.

Everyone in the NBA knew who Nate Robinson was, however. Same with Brandon Roy.

Even if theyre playing shitty they can still pull it out. No reason to hate just because they're that good. I'm an SU fan but you gotta have respect for such a good team.

More proof that Len Elmore is a the biggest douchebag on the planet:
My dad was sitting next to him flying First Class last week when they got to talking about Duke and Greg Paulus. Len Elmore's comment was that Greg Paulus is not as good as everyone thinks and we will see how bad he really is later on in the season.
Hey Len, no one cares what you think because you are not as good an announcer as everyone thinks and we will see just how bad you really are when you are doing Big East games on ESPN Regional. The worst part about Syracuse's National Championship season in 2003 was having to listen to Len Elmore do all of the games.

Having to rely on a lucky shot at the buzzer to beat a mediocre team at home is no reason to celebrate. If Duke plays like that against Carolina, they will lose.

Thats exactly what Ive been saying. My squad cant take some of these unranked and lower ranked teams for granted. The ACC is too tough.
I swear right now about 6 teams in the ACC could easily beat up on eachother.

Great game tonight. Fun to watch for sure.
By the way, I would have rushed the court to. Emotional wins like that, you don't really think....you get excited and just do things.
I was bummed out with the loss to Nova this weekend, but I think we will be alright. Just need a little defense.
Hey Royce, don't know if you saw it or not, but on the Blitz last night they talked to Sampson about the game and he basically said he was happy with the game other then they obviously would have liked to win, but he said unless you were there you have no idea what that atmosphere was like and he was very happy with the way they played and handled it. He also thought that if they played ten times, five in Philly and five in Norman it would probably be a 5-5 split, so basically he called it a home court win. The interviewer asked what they need to work on to be a Final Four team and Sampson said passing, getting it into Bookout and Gray more in the post and on ball defense. The Nova guards killed OU off the dribble going to the basket.

I didn't catch the Blitz this week. I always watch it but I had things to attend to.
I thought the same thing. Nova was not going to stop OU in the post, but for some reason we didn't figure that out until about 8 minutes to go. I may be crazy, but a 2-3 zone might have helped solve that dribble penetration. I mean absolutely no one could stop them man to man.

Saturday's win was big, but I think UNC will be very inconsistent this year. Against Kentucky they proved when they are on they are could be one of the best 15 teams in the country. However, I expect some losses that to teams that just should happen.

Saint Louis pushed UNC pretty hard last night. I think it was a great game for the young Tar Heels though. They faced a team that was on fire from the perimeter and refused to go away. The Heels would go on a run that made it look like it was over, and St. Louis would come right back and tie it back up. I was very impressed with their poise down the stretch.
Duke looked good, although I don't think you can say it was the blowout Duke fans were hoping for. I wouldn't be too confident going into Saturday if I were them.

Ok Morrison is more of a force downlow but thats where he belongs. He can shoot the 3 ball which is great but how many times is he going to be 9-13 from behind the arc? JJ is still my favorite. Down by 2 and 3 seconds left to win the game I want the ball in JJ's hands

Morrison is the better player. he doesnt need 3 screens to take a shot. jj is the better pure shooter, but the rest of his game is no where close to the level of morrisons. but he is in no what the best 3 point shooter in the history of college basketball. hell last year he wasnt even the best on his team. and over his career, hes not even close to being the best from the ACC, let alone duke. hell last year he wasnt even the best on his own team. its just the fact that he takes, on average, like 8 threes a game, and over 60% of all his attempts are 3s.
just in case you wondered- ACC best 3pt shooter by percentage- Cal Boyd- career average of .470 (jjs is under .400 before this season started with this season so far its about .416)
highest from duke Trajan Langdon- .426 career. jj would have to shoot about .550 from 3 this year to get close to that

They could be a Cinderella Sweet 16 team coming in as like a 7-10 seed.
I hope we are. I was calling us to make it before preseason. Oklahoma has a stacked team this year and will be cruising.
We have a very, very nice class coming in next year, and a Top 15 National player for 2007 has been visiting A&M a lot to see friends he has on the team:D
I just pray that we can keep Gilispie around. He was taught by the best, and his coaching attitude is reflected by his team. He's a Bobby Knight style coach minus all the bad tempers Knight has. I love his coaching style, and he's a great person based on the time i met him. He's a no nonsense guy and stresses defense and conditioning. If you're the best player playing that night, you are going to be on the court at the end of the game.
I think A&M can get into the tourny. We might be a year away, but if we don't have any big injuries, we should be able to make it. I think the Tech game on Jan.7th will be huge for us. It's our first real big competition (@Pacific will be tough too) and the Tech game could set a good tone for us heading into the BigXII schedule. The Texas game did it for us last year, and the Tech game could do it for us this year.

I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but I'll say it again... JJ is a great player, but he seems pretty selfish at times. I've seen him take some AWFUL shots in his career at Duke, and more than once those bad shots ended up losing the game for them. I know I know, "Well how many games has he won for them?". That's a good point. I just think his poor shot selection is going to end up costing Duke in the tournament again this year.

for all of my fellow Jelly haters, here's a hilarious article Pat Forde wrote about Tubby Smith and Kentucky.
What other goodies lurk on Tubby's desk?
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=2261251
here's a preview...
Whooooaaaaa! Look at this!
National Letter of Intent, November 2001.
I, J.J. Redick, hereby commit to an athletic scholarship at the University of Kentucky...
Unbelievable! Tubby must have misplaced it four years ago. Maybe he can send this to the NCAA and get Redick in a UK uniform by January.

as do i. i've had to tone it down a bit this year though. i generally don't talk a lot of shit about other teams (Jelly not included) if my team is having an off year. i don't like making myself an easy target.

eh, i think when your team has an off year it's the best. you should expect nothing (ie carolina) so when they make fun of you you're like "ok, yeah, what did you expect when you lose your top 7 scores." so when things go well you can be like "haha, look at that, out of no where"

yeah, i was thinking more along the lines of Jelly fans. i know it's a down year, but i'm not going to proclaim that we're the best and we'll be in the Final Four. it is what it is....... a rebuilding year. there's a chance that KU will gel and be able to make some noise in the tournament, but i'm not going to start screaming about it now. if it happens, great. if it doesn't, oh well.... it wasn't supposed to.

If Syracuse doesn't get a handle on the turnovers we are going to be struggling when we hit the Big East season. However we did some things right last night, we shot 46% from the field, but only 25% from long range. McNamara was awful from deep but he dished out 12 assists. We also tied a team recrord for blakced shots at 16.
No more basketball until the 27th. :(

Obviously if they need a miracle shot against VT at home, VT on the road may be tough. The ACC should be a sweet ride this year.

WVU is hurtin' your boys right now. Big XII is struggling this year.....
(sorry for posting basketball talk in this thread......:D )
Yeah, I don't know what to think about this team other then they must be overrated. They have played like crap since the the Villanova game. I pretty much attributed it to playing a bunch of juco teams and lacking motivation and fire, but now it's just really getting frustrating. It's rediculous for a Sampson team to give up 80+ points at home and they have no perimeter shooting.

Yep, just like football, the conference is terrible in basketball this year. If we beat Alabama and get one win over texas that's only two quality wins all season. That won't be very impressive when it comes time for seeding.

I had to gather my bearings before I posted. I have never been so angry at a basketball team.
Taj Gray is playing like an animal, but Michael Neal thinks his name is J.J. Redick and won't stop shooting. Now, I can live with the threes him and Terrell were taking, if they are with 7 or 8 on the shot clock, but not one pass, and then a shot. Unbelievale.
My man T-Griff with a nice put-back jam tonight though.

I've never understood rooting against your rival when they are playing an out of conference opponent. You root first and foremost for your team, then your conference and then against your rival.
Do I hate Georgetown with a passion? Absolutely. But until they are playing conference opponents, I want them to be undefeated. That way, when we beat them, it is that much sweeter.
