i think they were a pretty good team that got hot when it mattered. most people have forgotten that they got swept by the two time defending NIT Champions, South Carolina. but, they're a year older and all still together so they might be the real deal this year. that said, i fully expect the Jayhawks to beat them in november.....
I think they're one of three elite teams in the nation. I'm just not sure they are a step above Kansas and UNC like a few have suggested.

They have all their starters returning and will be a tough team for anyone to beat. All 5 averaged double figures in points, they won the most games ever in school history, were #2 in the nation in field goal % at 50, and they also set a school record for blocks. They started 17-0 and ended 11-0 with the SEC and NCAA championships under their belt. Donovan has assembled an incredible team, one that he has strived for the last 10 years. They didn't just get hot during the NCAA tourney, they played well as a team, something that other teams should take notice of. If they remain as unselfish as they were last year, look out. I can't wait for the game, but more importantly the season to start. Last year they played as one of the top 20 NCAA teams to ever play the game. Regardless of how they perform this year, it's in the tournament where they will make their mark again! Go Gators Woo-Hoo!!!
Florida is about to learn what Kansas and UNC have known for years.....
it's a lot different when you're playing as the favorite with a bullseye on your back than it is as the underdog team trying to get over the hump.

are you basing this on anything in particular or is that just a number you made up and threw out there?
darbini
10-26-2006, 01:06 PM
The thing is, Florida doesn't give a shit about that, and Donovan won't let them. When was Florida an underdog last year? Not too often, especially when they started 17-0. If your opponent doesn't have a bullseye on their back, regardless of who they are, then you will not succeed.

one of them will be on November 25th and another will come in the NCAA tournament.
the attitude that Florida is the only team in the country that has talent, swagger, is unselfish and will perform well is exactly what will keep them from winning it all this year.

Well, Oak Hill could have probably gone 17-0 against that schedule. They got to a mediocre SEC, and not only did Florida fail to dominate, but they didn't even win their own six team division. The Gators were anything but great during the regular season last year.

They've done well for the past 6 years, but couldn't succeed in the tournament, eventhough they were runner up back in 01. It was 1st and 2nd round exits on repeat but they finally got a team together and perfomred quite well. Who said they are the best team ever?

I figured you'd appreciate Paul Harris on his All-Big East First Team.
This is what Parrish said about ranking Cuse 24 in his preseason poll.
"There are many who criticized me for ranking freshman Paul Harris as one of the top three shooting guards in the nation, regardless of class. Truth is, Harris can -- and will -- play both guard spots, and all those haters will be apologizing by February, if not sooner."

I don't think many people here care one way or the other about Missouri this season. But for those that do Keon Lawrence(fr Guard, projected to be a starter) is out 4-6 weeks with a stress fracture in his foot. This comes on the heels of news that forward Glen Dandridge also broke his foot and underwent surgery. On the bright side 4 weeks would put Lawrence(I really hate that we have two guys on our squad named Lawrence;)) possibly coming back for U of A which should be our first major trial(although with this team I'm guessing every game is up in the air) and the 6 week time line would be in time for conference play.
Also, I don't remember seeing it discussed here but Kansas jr. Sasha Kaun is having knee trouble and it's looking like six weeks might be his down time too. How long untill Self announces that the team has miraculously resolved it's issues with CJ Giles?:lol just kidding

Pardon me, didn't want to quote the entire article, I thought I did an objective job, I was mainly trying to point out that it is even a consideration. It seems to me that if a person can't afford to pay child support over the last 19 months of his college career then it is going to be highly suspect if he is all of a sudden is able to start making the payments AND come up with the 4 grand that he owes in back pay(assuming this is what the judge rules). That being said, if I was a coach at a school that had just gotten in trouble with the NCAA for giving improper gifts to players I wouldn't touch this situation with a ten foot poll.
Before this weekend while technically he was "suspended indefinitely" or whatever the exact terminology was, most Kansas fans that I know(in real life and internet posters) as well as a few local radio personalities and columnists had written off any chance of a Giles return. Now Self is being quoted in the media saying he is considering a reinstatment.

Sutton 'alert and responsive' in Stillwater hospital
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Former Oklahoma State basketball coach Eddie Sutton was taken to a Stillwater hospital Friday morning after being found unresponsive in his car outside a Stillwater convenience store, police said.
In a statement, Stillwater Medical Center said Sutton is "alert and responsive. "
"The ER physician stated that Mr. Sutton is not under the influence of alcohol; however a possible reaction to new medication prescribed by his physician may be the cause of this incident," the release said. "The physician expects the patient to be evaluated and released sometime [Friday.]"
Oklahoma State spokesman Gary Shutt told The Oklahoman newspaper that Sutton had an allergic reaction to a new prescription medication.
Sutton had been "largely unresponsive" but able to communicate verbally with police officers and paramedics after they responded to the convenience store around 9:34 a.m. Friday, Stillwater Police Capt. Randy Dickerson said.
Oklahoma State assistant coach James Dickey told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that Sutton was resting comfortably at the hospital. Dickey said he visited Sutton Friday morning and said that he was told he would be released later Friday.
Dickey said the the Cowboys' exhibition scheduled for Friday night agaisnst Pittsburg State that will go on as planned. He said head coach Sean Sutton, who is Eddie Sutton's son, was at the hospital but would be coaching the team.
Sutton, 70, retired in May after compiling 798 wins in 36 years as a college coach at Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State, his alma mater. His retirement came about three months after a drunken driving accident caused him to miss the Cowboys' final 10 games last season.
After his retirement, Sutton had begun working with a new alcohol education and support program at Oklahoma State. His first appearance was a speech to about 1,500 students at a fraternity house in September.
Sutton, who ranks fifth in career wins among Division I men's coaches, reached the Final Four with Arkansas in 1978 and with Oklahoma State in 1995 and 2004.

From what I read, Pfeiffer hit something like 8 of 10 3s once the game was over and all of Carolina's regulars were out. Plus, when teams are getting way more than 100 possessions, they're going to score a lot of points.

'Cuse ripped off three wins in three days to take the BCA Invitational. Not that it wasn't expected, but it was good to see that they actually came through.
Thoughts on what we saw in the first three games. Our man-to-man defense is atrocious. Thank the maker we play such a good zone or we would struggle a lot this year. Some of the guys are just not quick enough to compete against some of the fastest guys in the Big East this season. With that being said, Josh Wright is going to be a stud on defense. He handled the rock well over the weekend and last night displyed his defensive prowess.
The bigs are going to struggle a bit this season as I expected them to, but Mookie is building on his exceptional play at the end of last season and seems to be continuing his development as a player. He is a force on defense as long as he doesn't get into foul trouble, and he shot free throws very well last night. If he can continue to do that, we will do well this season.
Paul Harris is an instant contributor. I don't think I agree with some of the writers who say that he will be the leader of this team come January or February, but I do think that he will contend for Freshman of the Year Honors. He certainly will claim Big East Freshman of the Year. His ability to rebound the ball is amazing. He is always in position and that is something that the 'Cuse traditionally has lacked.
Boeheim picked up wins 727, 728 and 729 over the weekend. Tying him with The Shark for #15 All-Time.

Of all things, you really can't say that they're overrated, that just doesn't make any sense. Just b/c they're ranked #1 doesn't mean they currently are the best team which noone can touch. I think all of the top 5 teams can beat eachother, it just comes down to playing the game. I'm interested to hear your reasons as to why they're overrated.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily say Florida is overrated. The only argument I've heard against them is that they just got hot when the tournament started, which I think is true, but they also started last season out with a 17 game (I think) winning streak.
I could even appreciate an argument that UNC is overrated. They didn't look too great in the tournament last season, and their ranking is based at least partially on their three freshmen. I think they're going to be an amazing team by the time the tournament starts, but I have a feeling there are going to be some growing pains early in the season.

How was UF extremely lucky? How was UNC unlucky? Florida started off with 17 wins in a row and ended with 11 straight(won the SEC tournament and NCAA). Their 6 losses were by a total of 23 pts. How could they not impress you with the talent they have when all they did was play almost perfect basketball, the talent was nothing but sophomores too. Ehhh.

To be fair, Florida lost the first good team they faced last year. There was no reason for a team as good as you say they were to lose six games in the SEC last year. The conference simply was not that good. They looked far more impressive during the NCAA tourney than they did at any other time of the season.

Isn't that the idea for every team?
They lost twice to S Carolina(2x NIT Cahamps which is still impressive), and twice to ranked Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas were the other. So what if they lost to the first good team they faced, it was #20 Tenn and then they beat #3 LSU a week later. There was a reason a team as good as they were didn't win some of those games. They were young and inexperienced, but they grew as a team and became a real threat to anyone in the country. I believe that they will be even better this year, who wouldn't. Offense and defense they were tops n the league. All 5 starters averaged 10+ pts a game. Even if I wasn't a fan of UF, I wouldn't want to face them this year b/c I would know how strong they were.:D

I absolutely cannot wait for tonight to see the Heels for the first time this season ...
I want to see Hansbrough. Everything I've read says he's bigger, stronger, just as hungry and according to an opposing coach at least 30% better than last year.
I want to see Reyshawn in a leadership role. He had a couple of sick dunks last night, and is one of the most talented returning players in the ACC. He can do pretty much anything on the basketball court.
I want to see the freshmen play. Lawson is the one who excites me most. From what I hear he's something like a cross between Raymond Felton and Dee Brown. In other words, the prototypical point guard to run for Roy. But I get almost excited about Wright. The guy is long, lean and athletic. I've already seen a couple of huge dunks for him. I think he'll be raw offensively, but with Hansbrough demanding so much attention will be the perfect compliment as someone who can get to the bucket for a dunk and hopefully be a monster on the offensive glass. Ellington, from what I hear, can simply fill the bucket. I hear McCants comparisons, sans the attitude. The other freshmen big probably won't see too much time with Hansbrough, Terry and Wright taking up most of the front court tickets.
I want to see Danny Green come off the bench and show the potential he has to be an absolute stud on the wing next year. He was a McDonalds All-American who can light up the scoreboard so many different ways. I'm banking on him no longer being a black hole when he gets the ball with one year under his belt.
I want to see Marcus Ginyard give the defensive lift that will be needed at times this year. It seems like he gets lost in the shuffle at times. He's got the potential to become Jackie Manuel with an offensive game. I see Ginyard making an NBA roster someday.
I haven't even mentioned the stability Bobby Fraser will bring to both guard positions or leadership, clutch long range shooting, hustle and humility in accepting a lesser role this season because he thinks it's best for the team from Wes Miller.
Tonight's tipoff can't come soon enough ...

No. I don't have it either. From what I heard Reyshawn got in foul trouble early and then energized the team to run away with it in the second half. All 18 he scored came after halftime.
I think they'll be fine. It'll take a while for all of that talent to mesh, figure out rotations for so many players and the freshmen to get used to the college game, but they'll be fine.

the two games the Tar Heels play between now and the KU vs. Florida game are against Winthrop and Gardner-Webb. they should look impressive and blow both teams out. by college football precedent no, though ive always said if you beat team ranked "X" you should swap ratings :lol anywho if KU beats UF, UNC will move up and KU will be #2. if OH ST beats Mich this weekend in theory michigan shouldn't drop because they are a better team than florida, however, because we love drama and the bcs, florida becomes #2 in the polls, usc stays #3 in the bcs thus moving to #2 and plays for the title unless of course they lose to Cal or ND in which case chaos ensues. bottom lime: UNC #1, KU #2, UF #3, maybe a tad lower depending. we'll see what happens with UNC/Ohio State and UNC/UK

the reason i asked is because a few years ago, the Jayhawks started the season as preseason #1 and Wake Forest jumped from #4 to #1 by winning the preseason NIT before Kansas had even played a game. luckily basketball has the best postseason event in all of sports so rankings mean nothing.... it just gives us something to talk about.

If Kansas looks impressive in a win over Florida I'd leapfrog them to No. 1. There could be an argument made at that point if UNC went through the NIT undefeated with wins over two ranked teams in Gonzaga and Tennesse. I, however, would put Kansas at the top so long as they didn't look like utter shit and somehow squeek out a win over the Gators.

Well, I look at it this way... voters have already decided they think UNC is better than Kansas right now. For Kansas to jump over them, they'll have to convince the voters that they're better than UNC. If UNC is blowing out their opponents (regardless of who they are), even if Kansas beats Florida, I'm not sure it would be enough to convince voters that Kansas is better than UNC.

I'm actually the sports editor for the Sacred Heart newspaper. I was at the game last night as a member of the press covering the game with two of my guys. I had an amazing time. I was on the floor for most of the game taking pictures. It was unreal just walking on the court with UNC. We don't get any big name opponents so this is new to me.
Everyone was so nice. Roy Williams was great after the game, he kept making jokes about Tyler falling in pregames (which was hilarious). He was a real nice guy too, he talked to me for a bit. He said everyone is worried about how he's going to find time for all the players except him. Tyler is a great kid too. Not the brightest kid in the world, but again, really nice. And yes, he DID get bigger. That was the first time I've seen him in person, and standing out on the court while he's dunking medicine balls one-handed pretty much confirmed the fact that he's a BEAST.
As far as the actual game goes... you guys got some perimeter defense issues. Our boy Luke Granata dropped 8 three's on you guys and most of them were wide open. I know its way early and its preseason NIT so they aren't really into the game, but thats just what I noticed.
Either way, I'll post some pics I took from the court probably tomorrow in this thread. Charlotte kicked my ass but it was a damn good time.

First I want to agree with you about a team clicking in March. I think the ACC and Big X conference tourneys are probably the best warmups to the big dance as a team can get. As for Knight, I wouldn't hire him nor if I ever had a child would I let him play for him. His past behavior (even towards his own son) dictates that he shouldn't be coaching at this level, however the parents that send their kids to him are just as much to blame.

I don't fully support some of his actions, but I can't argue with the results. He motivates his players to play to their full potential and although is techniques may sometimes be unorthodox and heated, it is the only way he knows how to coach. That being said, I wouldn't let my kids play for him but I would have no problem with my school hiring him to coach. He is still a beloved figure here at IU and many would advocate his return even though it could never work.

I've been a Carolina fan since I was 10 years old, during the Stackhouse, Wallace, Cota, Jamison, Carter years. I was raised around IU fans and that may be the reason I decided to follow another team. Don't get me wrong, I still cheer for IU but my heart truly lies with the Tar Heels. When IU and UNC played 2 years ago at Assembly Hall I was all decked out in Carolina Blue though.:D

any other coach in america, what happened with Bob Knight wouldn't even be mentioned. I think it's a huge overreaction
:thumbsup That is the most important distinction that can be drawn from all of this.

went to NCSU, pull for NCSU, except when they play my Blue Devils. Been a Duke fan since I was very, very small, they were a part of me long before I considered attending NCSU. Why would that change?

I do... but my former school is in the NAIA. I'm allowed to have an NCAA team as well (plus I've been a UNC fan for ten years :D ).

Completely understandable then.:) As a student at NCSU (We're gonna blow this year), I have to deal with people who didn't like UNC until they won a national championship..I also have to hear them talk shit to me, which is kind of ridiculous. I also find that a lot of homeless people wear UNC gear, which is weird. My brother went there so I've been around UNC fans forever, so I see where ya'll are coming from. I guess there are a few that ruin the bunch...kind of like dmb fans.:cool

so... Oral Roberts is 7 minutes from beating Kansas. In Kansas. Isn't Kansas supposed to wait until about the 2nd week of March to lose to that kind of team?
You can never underestimate a Sutton coached team. :D

No, it's cool, as long as you have a reason, I run into too many bandwagon fans.

Yeah, I don't like bandwagon fans either. That's interesting about homeless people wearing UNC gear... hopefully they're not former law students. :lol I'll be applying to law school there soon. It's tough to get in from out of state though.
