Oh yeah, I'm from North Carolina too, the state is full of bandwagon fans. :)
Funny thing is, it's easy to tell which ones are which!

Completely understandable then.:) As a student at NCSU (We're gonna blow this year), I have to deal with people who didn't like UNC until they won a national championship..I also have to hear them talk shit to me, which is kind of ridiculous. I also find that a lot of homeless people wear UNC gear, which is weird. My brother went there so I've been around UNC fans forever, so I see where ya'll are coming from. I guess there are a few that ruin the bunch...kind of like dmb fans.:cool
I've tried to start many conversations with people I see wearing UNC clothing only to find that they don't really know much about the history of the program. Bandwagon jumpers I guess...I would compare these fans to many Yankees fans.

Yeah, I don't like bandwagon fans either. That's interesting about homeless people wearing UNC gear... hopefully they're not former law students. :lol I'll be applying to law school there soon. It's tough to get in from out of state though.
I'm also gonna be applying to UNC Law School. I'm not really expecting to get in though.

Yankees fans, Early 90's bulls fans, late 90s laker fans, People who started liking the Colts all of a sudden last year....Also, I've never seen so many Steeler fans in my state as I did last year. Hey, Everyone loves a winner! Funny thing is, most of those teams have amazing traditions (steelers, yanks...)

Yeah, I was slightly embarassed when UNC and the Steelers both won championships within a ten month period. I'd been a fan of both for many years and had endured some pretty bad seasons, but me being a fan of both made me look like quite the bandwagon fan.

See? That goes along with a few ruining the whole bunch...you've been a fan for a long time but you look like a bandwagoner just because they won and everyone likes them all of a sudden. It's not fair to people who withstand terrible seasons (ala Panthers 1-15 season.:lorraine )

:thumbsup I've also seen evidence of all these as well, especially with the Bulls and Colts since they're located in my geographical region. It's just the way it works I guess. I'm proud to say that with all of my teams, I've been a fan for quite some time with the exception of the NBA in which I've never had a favorite team. I guess if I had to pick a team I go with the Cavs because of LeBron or the Celtics since I was a fan as a kid due to Larry Bird being from my hometown. I'm going through a struggle at the moment as far as my favorite NBA team goes. I've been a Sixers fan since they drafted Stackhouse over ten years ago (and by association have been a HUGE Allen Iverson fan for a decade), but I'm drawn strongly to the Bobcats as of late, thanks mainly to Raymond Felton. However, I just can't bring myself to switch teams... I've been through too much with the Sixers to just change to another team now.

Roy planned to have a talk with Graves on Sunday or Monday (I forget the day) about the possibility of redshirting. When Graves came in for the talk he actually suggested it before Roy and was game. When you think about it, it makes sense. There was no way he was sniffing minutes ahead of Terry, Green, Ellington and Ginyard.

Thank God the Heels hung on and avoided the same fate as Kansas. I don't want to judge too much because I didn't watch and it was just one game early in the season (Santa Clara, holla), but it maybe losing Giles and Kaun may be more detrimental to their frontcourt depth than everyone thought. That could be huge in a couple weeks against Horford and Noah.

wow, just got home and saw that KU was upset by Bill Selfs former team, Oral Roberts. why am i laughing you ask? because they finally realized that it's better to lose a game in the first week of your season than the last. a few points about this loss......
1. better now than in the first round of the tournament.
2. maybe now the team realizes that just because the nation and voters think you're one of the best in the nation doesn't mean that the team you're playing against feels the same way.
3. hopefully this lights a fire under their asses and they go out and play like they're capable of and beat the hell out of Florida next weekend.
4. UNC lost to an unranked opponent in the first week of the season a couple years back and ended up with a National Title later that year. there's no shame in taking a bad loss as long as it makes you a better team down the road.
that's all for now......

On to my Heels assessment. Frustration, frustration, frustration. There is no way Winthrop should sniff anywhere near that against all of North Carolina's talent, and I don't think they would have if the Heels played anything that resembled perimeter defense in the first half. You've got to give Winthrop credit though, the had open threes and hit open threes. Onto individual players ...
Hansbrough - Best player in the nation and I don't even think it's really close
Wright - I loved most of what I saw out of him. That combination of size and athleticism is downright scary; that block, the oop, the crossover from top of the key. Sick, sick, sick. He's the perfect complement to Hansbrough inside.
Terry - By far the most disappointing player of the night. He seemed way too passive at times and when he wasn't that he was trying to force things to happen. He needs to play better.
Ellington - He doesn't stand out as doing anything great, but I loved what I saw. Looks to be able to score effectively anywhere from 23 feet on in and has a very smooth offensive game.
Frasor - I honestly don't remember much about his play tonight. I don't remember him wowing me, but I don't remember him making mistakes either. Pretty much what I remember from last year.
Lawson - While he was erratic at times, played to fast at times also and turned the ball over in the first half, I love what they are capable of him on the floor. He'll be starting by the beginning of the ACC season and the best point guard in the conference come March.
Ginyard - Was not impressed offensively tonight as he was very inconsistent. However, he was the one player whose perimeter defense impressed me tonight. If the team can't improve in that aspect, he could very well end up starting.
Green - Quiet game. Didn't play much and didn't show much.
Miller - Jumper was off, but I always love the hustle he brings out there.
Thompson - I was pleasantly surprised. He showed off a couple of nice moves midway through the first half. He's still raw, but I'm very comfortable with him being the fourth guy at the 4 or 5.

I didn't even think about Noel. He wasn't the most talented player, but he hustled and had great athletic ability. I didn't include Peppers since he only played 2 years and was more of a force in football. That would be like including Ronald Curry (who's jersey I have since it was released that year, the year of the dreaded NC emblem on the chest).

You're right, Noel wasn't the most talented player, but he hustled so hard and just had that will to win. That's what made him a special player. I also love that he was something like one of the top 10 receivers in the nation his senior year, but walked on at Carolina to play basketball because it was his dream growing up. You can't beat that kind of love for the program.
As for J-Pep. He definitely was more of a force in football and did only play two years, but he's still up there for me just because I've never seen a 6'6'' big man throw around people in the paint the way he used to.

I was talking about the plethora of UNC avatars and being sarcastic, not rude by any means. All my friends are either Duke haters or die hard Carolina fans, so I can take a lot of crap in regards to CBB.
I am curious to see if Paulus will reach his potential. He is a pretty good point gaurd, but not great by any stretch. If he doesn't start knocking down some open shots, he will really start to look bad because in a half court set, he isn't going to be blowing by anyone. Unfortunately I have not been able to get a good look at Duke thus far this year, so can't say too much so far. We'll see how he progresses this year. I guess I wouldn't consider him overrated only because I don't hear him being talked about as all that great or anything, like Hansbrough (sp) who everyone is talking about AND is living up to it.

Yeah, it's tough to beat watching one of the best teams in the nation play to start your journalism career. I'm headed out of town this afternoon, but will probably hit you up with a PM sometime after I get back for a little journalism nerd talk.
Sounds like a plan. I've covered plenty of sporting events for the school but just the atmosphere that comes with a big college team (any school, not just UNC) is unbeatable.

That's what I've always thought too. I don't blame him too much for that 8-20 season though... if Joseph Forte had stuck around like he should've, they would've been decent.
Yeah, with Forte they would've at least been competitive.

I guess I missed this one. Would you say that the teams that have won the championship every year since, like, um... the beginning of basketball relied on luck? Luck may advance you into the next round, but skill and good coaching will get you a trophy every time. So yes, good players AND good coaching will bring you success. Kansas has proven this many years since I've been born. Maybe that's what you were trying to say when you said it doesn't "always bring you success."

It'll take more than eight minutes of watching him to convince me. Also, it wasn't his defense that was most impressive of his PG skills. With Farmar's leadership I don't know that an average Kentucky team would have come back, but I was watching a better game so I may be wrong there.

Just wanted to remind that when accuse someone of knowing "nothing about college basketball", those type of words might come back to haunt you. 13.7 ppg, 8apg and 3spg are not a bad way to start the season (only 3 games granted)- Farmer was, and is a good player, but Collinson is a better pg for UCLA, and, as I said, what hurts UCLA is that they do not have a second ball handler.

I agree, but to be fair, you did cite his defensive ability as the reason he's a better fit than Farmar. I get the impression that if that holds to be true, it'll be because of his playmaking ability. Collison's quickness allows him to get in the lane with ease, which benefits the whole teams. It gives Afflalo space to operate in the wing, Shipp open three-point attempts and easy buckets for Mbah a Moute and Mata.

Playmaking, running the break and defense. UCLA this year is going to be in the thick of this - Afflalo is only the 3rd best player on the team.

UNC looked 100% better on offense today. They're actually starting to play as a team, which is great. The next thing they really need to work on is their perimeter defense. The past two games have reaffirmed my belief that the fate of UNC lies with Lawson. He looked horrid against Gonzaga, and the Heels struggled completely offensively. Yesterday he looked sooooo much better and they rolled. The first half especially was damn impressive. When Lawson is playing well he penetrates almost at will and creates easy baskets for himself and open looks for teammates.
The one player who really impressed me at MSG is Brandan Wright. I think there's a very real possibility come the middle of the conference season we could easily be saying Hansbrough/Wright > Horford/Noah.
UNC41
11-26-2006, 01:03 AM
Arthur has been the only impressive player in this game so far. Humphrey is the only reason Florida is in this game. He's hit a couple of shots at big times so I guess you can throw him in that category. Green played a nice half and Rush looked very good at times. I still don't see how Noah might have been the first pick in the last NBA Draft.

Kansas tried to give that game away at the end of regulation. Wright played and insane first half and Arthur played like a fifth year senior year at the end of the game. Green was stellar throughout and Humphrey was HUGE late after hitting a couple of momentum-stopping threes in the first half. Rush took a dump for the second half until he made some clutch baskets in overtime.

Because they've played no one? Running off impressive at the beginning of the season against average and shit teams and then falling short of the hype has been a trend for Pitt the past couple years. After beating Georgia Tech and Kentucky, UCLA deserves to be No. 1. Right now, I'd slot Pitt in at No. 6 behind three one-loss teams.

the game would be much more intriguing to me with Oden playing, but it'll still be worth watching. i personally think the Tar Heels are going to run them out of the gym.....

I hope so. When Lawson is playing well, the Heels are truly a scary team. If he can hit his stride by February they could be uberscary come March.
Also, what are your thoughts on Brandon Rush's disappearing act on Saturday until OT. I was really hoping to see a lot more out of him.

Me too. Especially because he's a defensive force, but still raw offensively. I wanted to see Tyler against that challenge. The last time they played, he fared well against Oden though.

i won't be to bothered by it as long as it doesn't become a habit. they were winning that game with Arthur and Wright underneath the basket with the Florida frontcourt in foul trouble, so i was fine with them attacking it that way and taking the outside shot when it was there. i would like to see him get more aggressive on the offensive end at times, but in a game like that i don't want them to change what's working just for the sake of getting him some looks. if it's there he'll take it, but i don't want him to feel forced to be the go to guy.... even though he is.

Understandable. I was just surprised because I've never seen him that passive before. Even if he wasn't needed to be the go-to-guy that game, I can't believe he wasn't getting the ball on backdoor cuts until overtime. Florida's foul trouble did hurt their frontcourt, but I don't think they were any good defensively when not committing fouls.

We have caught quite a bit of heat locally for rarely playing Missouri State(formerly Southwest Missouri) of the Mo Valley, even when our program had a little integrity before Snyder drove it into the ground. Mainly for the very reasons you/Bilas pointed out. We have nothing to gain from playing MO State and everything to lose. Regardless of the rankings it is always going to be considered an upset when Missouri State wins one(which will inevitably happen due to the nature of college basketball).
They are also textbook trap games, mid major teams tend to always get pumped up for games vs BCS schools, while the BCS school might be looking past them to a marquee match up down the road or conference play (see ORU-kU vs UF-kU). I'm not saying this is an excuse, just a reason.

As far as Syracuse, we are ranked too high at #14. The only thing that has saved us this year is that fact that for the most part we have played against weaker opponents. I'm not saying we have played weak teams, because some of those guys can really play. Penn is a quality team as are Charlotte and Canisius. Saturday is going to show how Syracuse can play against a top-quality opponent. If we play lax like we have for half the game each game this season, we will not win.

Just because both teams are not ranked does nothing to take away from it being a big game. OSU and Syracuse are two marquee programs and this is a big game for teams. You could have just pointed out that it may not a bigger game, but you deciced to be an ass about it with your "witty" remark. Besides, rankings mean nothing in college basketball.

Maybe marquee was the wrong word, but OSU is a top tier program in college basketball. OSU has only missed the tourney 3 times in 16 years and gone to the Final Four twice in that time as well. And don't give me the no titles arguement as them not being a top tier program. Are we a Duke, UNC or Kentucky? No, but there is plenty of tradition and pride in Gallagher-Iba.

Historically, yes I'd stay OSU is in the tier behind the elite programs in the nation. Recently, they've seemed to put together many mediocre to solid teams and then every once in a while one good enough to make a very deep run. This year I don't think is one of those years.

This years team is still young and is going to make mistakes. Not all of our games have been very pretty this year, but at least we are winning the close games we could't last year. Bogan and Dove are beasts on defense and Curry is still putting up solid numbers. Harris is going to have a breakthrough season and Cooper just needs to gain some confidence because he a monster. I think the Pokes will edge out the Aggies for second in the Big 12 and get at least a 5 or 4 seed in the tourney.

Are you fucking kidding me!!!! If ask anyone to talk about anything basketball in the state of Oklahoma, you really think they'll talk about OU? You have lost your mind. Henry Iba and Eddie Sutton seem to come to a lot of peoples minds. Billy Tubbs and Kelvin Sampson will never be in league of these two men. Never mind that, Lloyd Nobel Arena only sells out when the Pokes and Longhorns come to town, every other night everyone leaves after they get their free hot dog, coke and t-shirt. You want to talk about basketball tradition? How many titles does OU have in basketball? None. OU may have more wins in a rivalry or as a program, but there is no tradition to OU basketball. Typical Poke. Concerned about the Sooners. Actually OU is looking alright. We are 5-2, and lost to one great team and one decent team. We beat all the scrubs and if we would have played more of them (like OSU) we would be 7-0. And by the way, we weren't squeeking by them at home by 4 points like you guys.
By the way:
Since the Big XII formed in '96.

I just get tired of OSU fans thinking they are up there with Duke and UNC in basketball, when in reality, they are actually right there with OU. For some reason, OSU fans really care that the LNC isn't the greatest place to play in there world, but here is a news flash for you: attendence doesn't win games. And here is the funny part: obviously is doesn't help that much, because OU has done better at home historically than OSU has.

wasn't there someone predicting a 15 point Ohio State win around here last night?
they played well, they're much better than i thought they'd be this early in the season, but playing your first ranked team and your first road game of the season at UNC is too much to ask of anyone.....

so is it safe to say that Butler is the #1 team in the nation?
Gonzaga beats UNC, Butler beats Gonzaga, UNC beats Ohio State.
Who's next?

yeah, i was predicting a 15 point Ohio State win. UNC just turned it up BIG TIME in the 2nd half. Ohio State was well on their way for most of the first half. Nothing wrong with going against the grain every once in a while. It was just a feeling that I had, that happened to be wrong. Big deal
If Oden was playing tonight, I believe OSU would have won this game handily.

i think it's safe to say that UCLA is the #1 team in the nation until they lose. i hate how ESPN's polls always seem to go hand in hand with the televised games they have coming up.

Disagree. UNC is good.

no problem, i was just giving you shit. i'm wrong all the time.... :lol
but why is it that Greg Oden has been annointed the best player in college basketball without ever stepping on the court? i know he's got a lot of potential to be good, but i feel that he's being set up for failure with the expectations that have been put on him.

It would have been a different game but the Heels would've adjusted. Would Ohio St. have had a better chance of winning? Yes. Does that mean they would've won. No.
Anyways, I'm really excited about this UNC team. In all my years of watching Tar Heels basketbally, this may be my all-time favorite team to watch.

Oden will own. And with him they could've done much better. Takes a lot of focus off our relying 3-pointers. With a center, you win. UNC proved that tonight with Hansborough.
But I wish Dick Vitale would shut up about the ACC and Greg Oden. He makes me want to shoot myself.
Good start for my Buckeyes who we clearly knew weren't number 1 headed into this. At least I thought so.

yeah, it does kind of suck that he has these ridiculous expectations...but he is going to make such a huge difference in their lineup. OSU's front court flat out sucked tonight. I live in Indy. I went and saw Oden and Conley play a few times last year. I know it's high school, and the level that they are playing right now is in a whole different galaxy than high school ball, but Oden was absolutely dominant. I mean it is scary how good the kid is. I can't wait until he suits up, OSU is going to be frightening. I'm hoping for a rematch in early April. That game was so much fun.
