Hey I admitted that I didn't make an intelligent pick...I just went with my gut.
Too bad my gut is usually wrong!
Fuck you man. Wasn't it you that whipped us all in the 2005 march madness pool? :lol Your gut can't be THAT bad. :)

Hey, Chris Paul can ball. But that's the problem with 90% of the NBA teams. They rely on one guy. I just got sick of it (yes, I got sick of Kobe).
And I'd love to see this Santa Clara team in the tourney. These guys know their offense and run it beautifully.
There are no TEAMS in the NBA. Just franchises (with franchise players of course).
Both this St Mary's team and Santa Clara are really good. Even if the winner of this game loses to Gonzaga in the championship game, they SHOULD make the tournament.

Here's one from wikipedia, but it doesn't have the teams on it so it's probably not what you're looking for.

Eh, I can think of 4 teams in the NBA worthy of my time. Maybe 5 or 6. Doesn't matter though :)
Looks like Santa Clara takes this one. Go Broncos tomorrow!!!

There are some "teams" to watch in the NBA, but even those teams revolve around one marquee player. The Suns are really the exception, and thus my favorite team to watch.

Yeah, but everyone's bracket was screwed up by teams like George Mason and Bradley last year. I know with 100% certainty that no one in our pool had Florida winning it all.

Yeah but I remember going 0/4 in my final four and 2/8 or something in my elite 8. So I'm sure I didn't place well at all :lol Now I wonder who won the Ants pool. :confused
:thumbsup I don't like Duke's attitude and body language on the court either this year. They seem so vulnerable and confused...or something. Kinda hard to explain. I feel they play too soft.

I'm gonna do it.
On another note, in seeing a replay of the Henderson elbow today, I now feel it was intentional...:o
So Hansbrough's nose is broken. Not only that but he has to have a root canal once the season is over for something that happened to his teeth earlier in the game. What a beast.
I'm clearly seeing the intent too, Clay. I rewatched about 4 minutes of the CBS footage and it looks intentional. I wanted to give Henderson the benefit of the doubt because he's tight with Ellington (and other Tar Heels from what I've read), but can't.
Billy Packer's reaction was horrid. He went on and on about poor Henderson. OMG, he might have to miss a game after throwing an elbow. And finally when Nantz brought up whether or not Hansbrough would be ok, Packer said, "I agree, Jim," and then went back to defending Henderson immedietly.

I'm not Jim Rome's biggest fan, but love him today. Here are some excerpts I pulled from another board on him ripping dook.
"Coach K said that the game was over and the starters shouldn't have been in. Then why did you call a timeout with :50 left? Because the game wasn't over, and that's why Roy Williams had his guy in."
"Your program is down, your team isn't what it once was, and Carolina rolled you up, again. You need to own that."
"Coach K said that Gerald is not that guy and they are not that kind of program - CLEARLY YOU ARE, clearly you are"
"You admitted as much, you're talking out of both sides of your mouth."
"This had a lot more to do with the fact that you got rolled up again, and your a 7 seed in the tournament"
email
"Dear Jim,
I don't think Henderson did anything wrong.
Signed,
John Cheney"
"what are guys rebounding with their elbows now? I must have missed this in basketball 101a."
"reports now are Tyler Hansbrough does have a broken nose. yeah, that'll happen when I guy comes after you with a fully loaded elbow. and it does, and it did"
"Dear Jim,
I can't believe you don't believe Duke basketball program is no longer among the elite.
Signed

Yeah, I definitely feel as though Bill Packer's comments may have influenced my initial opinion. I just really wanted to believe that Coach K (who I respect) would not lower himself to that level. Really sucks that Hansbrough has a broken nose, but he's a warrior so I'm not too concerned.
Also I love those Jim Rome comments you posted. I'm not a big fan of his either, but he hit the nail directly on the head.
I've been wearing my Hansbrough jersey on campus today. So many people have come up to me and commented on how big a badass they think he is.:lol

You know, I watched the replay probably 50 times and I don't think Gerald Henderson did it on purpose. It really looks like he is going to extend his hand to block the shot, but it is swatted away so he pulls his arm back and the elbow hits Tyler.
So, I don't think Gerald Henderson really messed up.
Crucify me if you will, but that is how I saw it.

I agree that he didn't intend to hurt Hansbrough, but he did have the intent of committing a hard foul when he left his feet. As hard as he may have tried to stop from doing so, his momentum in addition to Tyler getting pushed forward led to the incident.

Completely agree, it's basketball, sports are physical, people DO get elbows in the nose, it's not the end of the world. I can't even see how people are making a case that it was intentional, that's just whining to whine IMO because you hate Duke. This play looked FAR less intentional than the Kobe Bryant elbow, and that was a joke by itself.

From Stewart Mandel @ si.com:
• Outside of UCLA and Ohio State, the race for the No. 1 seeds could remain very fluid right up until Sunday. Right now I have Kansas and Wisconsin just ahead of North Carolina and Florida, but if either the Jayhawks or Badgers stumble prior to their tourney finals, the Heels or Gators could easily pass them. Note, however, that due to time constraints, the committee has to mostly wrap up the seeding process prior to Sunday's conference-title games, so whether or not the teams involved actually win championships might not have an impact.
• Texas A&M and Georgetown will be hard-pressed to reach the top line, but I don't see them slipping below a second seed, either. There's a noticeable difference between them and the teams currently on the three line.

antsmarching.org Championship Week Challenge!
Everyone's welcome to play, so please participate, especially you regulars on here. Four of us have made our picks already, so backread to page 525, copy and paste and make your picks and post em.
Ultimate prize: bragging rights and the glory of bringing fear into the eyes of your opponents when the NCAA pool rolls around :)
After contemplating with Bryan and myself here are the rules:
Make picks for every game using the example we have posted on page 525 by 11amET Wednesday.
Make picks for these conferences: Atlantic-10, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, Pac-10, and SEC.
Since most of us probably don't know alot about the Atlantic-10, it will be used as a TIEBREAK IF ANY OF US ARE TIED AT THE END OF THE WEEK. (sorry Bob, we gotta be as fair as possible :))
So, here's the point system:
First Round games: 1 point
Second Round games: 2 points
Semifinal games: 4 points
Final games: 8 points
UPSETS: If a lower seed you selected wins their game, you get bonus points to be determined by the deficit of the lower team's seed from the higher seed. (example: 9 seed FSU defeats 8 seed Clemson you get 1 additional point. 10 seed NC State defeats 1 seed UNC, you get 9 additional points.)
****unofficial rule, tell me if you agree or not****:
BLOWOUTS: For the sake of getting points, you get 4 additional points if your team wins by 20, and 1 bonus point for every additonal 5 points in the victory's margin. (Ex. Ohio State wins by 31, you get 6 bonus points: (20 + 5 + 5).

Well GT was a big game, would've been in the driver's seat for the conference title. VT was a big game, a chance for revenge. There will be teams just like these mid-good teams in the ACCs and NCAAs. I'm not yet convinced we can string 6 wins together.
And yes, Kansas is damn good, at least the way they're playing right now. Pending conference tourneys, they might be my pick to cut the nets.

they were big games yes, but i think we both know that we showed up to play against duke and ohio state more than gt. it also is that for gt and vt can make or break their season if they win. so it's always going to be a bigger game for the opposing team in a situation like that.

Regardless, there's no reason to shit the bed though. UNC is ALWAYS going to be an opponent's biggest game of the season, but there's a reason for that. We're supposed to have the talent and the coaching, so we should always be ready to play, and this season we have lacked that.
Granted, we played a great game yesterday, but that has happened many times this season followed by a "wtf?" game. Can't be overconfident with this team like you could with the '05 squad.

Oh and too all those who received a PM from me, please do not post the information for the group in this thread. This was pointed out to me by another regular poster in this thread after I had already sent a few of the PMs, so I was sure to include this information in the rest of the PMs. This is a PRIVATE group!!!
21 other people, besides myself, have been invited to play. This may seem like a lot, but many of them are people that played in the past that I invited out of courtesy even though they may not have posted in this thread in awhile. I do not expect them all to join anyways.

Wow. This is the first time I've seen the broadcast as I was at the game. They really did show it a lot didn't they. I can't BELIEVE Billy Packer. He IMMEDIATELY jumps on it: "Definitely not intentional there." HE ACTUALLY ASKS "WHO IS THE FOUL ON????" I actually commend Jim Nantz (unbelievable, I know) for not punching him in the freakin' face. I think Bill Simmons says it best in his blog today:
I don't mean to pile on Billy Packer here -- OK, maybe I do -- but when you're already considered to be one of the biggest apologists on the planet for Duke basketball, is it really a good idea to keep making excuses for a Duke player after he just threw a malicious elbow at Carolina's best player with 15 seconds remaining in an 12-point game? That was one of the strangest sequences I've ever watched in a televised basketball game. Here's a rough transcript (I'm doing it from memory):
(We see a replay of Gerald Henderson measuring Hansbrough, flying over from six feet away, then delivering a Macho Man Savage-type elbow into Hansbrough's face one second after Hansbrough had already been stripped of the ball.)
Packer: "Yeah, he was going for the ball ... that was NOT intentional."
(We see another replay of the same thing from a different angle -- this time, it looks like Henderson could potentially be arrested for what just happened.)
Packer: "See, from that replay, there's NO QUESTION that Henderson was going for the ball ... that was definitely an accident.)
(Jim Nantz thinks about mentioning that Hansbrough had already been stripped of the ball before Henderson even raises his elbow, realizes that he has to announce games with Packer for the next four weeks, doesn't want it to be awkward, decides against saying anything at all, starts day-dreaming about the Masters.)
Packer: "Nope ... no way. He was going for the ball."
(Cut to a replay of Hansbrough walking off the court with his face broken in half.)
Packer: "Jim, if anything, that was probably Hansbrough's fault for going after Henderson's elbow with his face ..."
You get the idea. We have media criticism rules at ESPN, so I have to tread carefully here ... but have you noticed that Packer somehow turns himself into a major story before EVERY NCAA TOURNAMENT? As I wrote a couple of years ago, I was watching an Indiana State Final Four game from the '79 tournament and they made a big deal before the game about how Packer had publicly attacked Indy State's credentials for the entire tournament, and now they were in the Final Four and he was eating a little crow -- they even showed an awkward interview with him and Larry Bird after the game. This was 28 years ago!!!!!! What chain of events needs to happen for CBS to replace him with a more palatable, more enjoyable, agenda-less lead analyst? Does 100 percent of the country have to band together and say, "We're tired of this guy?" Or are we good at the current number of 97 percent?
My favorite part of the whole thing: the "Go to Hell dook" chant that starts up at about 2:39. I don't think there was a single student, 6 year-old, or grandma who wasn't chanting. I just wish I had a kid there to teach them an important life lesson in morality.

Wow, lots of activity around here tonight. Seems I can't walk away from my computer without something going down. Ahh, the beauty of Championship Week. So let's get to it.
Justin, great work with the way the Conference Tournament pools are going to work. I see a lot of people are following my Atlantic 10 template :lol I hear you though, that's a fair way to use the A-10, as a tiebreaker.
Also, to all of you, Justin said it, and I agree 100%. This forum has been a lot of fun to hang out in and talk college hoop. Props to all of you.
On to the games of the day. I was at a high school basketball game that started at 7pm tonight, so I wasn't able to watch the CAA game. I did see the highlights though. Looks like George Mason really blew the game at the end. I feel bad for Coach Larranaga (like anybody knew who he was a year ago today :lol ). But as a Bubble Watcher, as you all know that I am, the VCU victory makes me happy. Now to contradict what I said last night, I have recently acquired the knowledge that Old Dominion beat Drexel twice during the regular season. Drexel has been very intriguing to me since winning @ Cuse and @ Nova early this season, so I have been watching them very closely. Maybe I should give more love to ODU?
I was able to get over to the bar across the street from the Times Union Center in downtown Albany, NY, (which, coincidentally, is the homecourt of the Siena Saints) to watch the MAAC Championship, Siena vs. Niagara. It was a very fun game to watch. I said it to the guy I was with over and over early in the second half, that it was going to be a fun end. It was, and although I suppose I was rooting for hometown Siena, Niagara is going to only its third NCAAs in school history. So good for them. And for the record, Siena last went to the NCAAs in 2002 (they won the play-in game in Dayton, then lost to eventual National Champion Maryland, with that team Juan Dixon, Steve Blake, Lonny Baxter, etc.).
The WCC game was also on, but I didn't pay a WHOLE lot of attention to it. I'm lukewarm to it. As a bubble watcher, it's fantastic. But like the rest of you, I'm rather sick of Gonzaga. Remember way back when when the Zags went to that Elite Eight as a Cinderella way back when, and everybody loved them? It seems that now the more people I talk to, the more sick and tired everybody is of them now. Maybe because of success? Not really sure....
One more day until the big conferences start their tournaments. So on tap tomorrow I see we have the Sun Belt Tournament final, the Mid-Continent, and the Horizon.
Mid-Continent, 7pm, ESPN: Oral Robert vs. Oakland (As I remember, Oral Roberts was upset in the final of this tournament last season, so look for them to take this one)
Sun Belt, 9pm, ESPN2: North Texas vs. Arkansas State
Horizon, 9pm, ESPN: Wright State vs. Butler (Butler, PLEASE win this game, for us Bubble Watchers!!!)

Nice to see you tonight Bob :)
Okay, well after looking at both schedules I think they both have to go in. Drexel has only 3 losses (Rider, Hofstra, W&M) to teams outside of the tournament (Penn, ODU, VCU). Like you said, those wins in the Big East are huge. ODU has "quality losses" against VT, Clemson, and Winthrop, but they've swept Drexel like you mentioned and beaten VCU. Oh and not to mention, they beat some school called Georgetown. The case for both these teams being IN is stronger than OUT. Especially with Winthrop and Gonzaga taking their rightful bids, they've got some space to breathe.
You and your damn MAAC knowledge. Shut up :lol ;) Niagara was okay today, I only saw the 2nd half. They've got no distinguishable strength, not much to rely on, but good for them that they got in.
Butler needs to win this one too, agreed.

you know why he asked who the foul was on? because the whistle was BEFORE the hit to the nose. That Johnson (#51) raked Tyler across the right arm and then he got hit by Henderson.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAR2tWAj49o&mode=related&search=
and he didn't punch him in the face, he didn't get an elbow to the face it was his forearm.
do I think he did it on purpose? I dunno. One angle (below the basket) makes me think he did. another (close up from the sideline, behind Hansbrough) makes me think that he was trying to go after the ball and missed BECAUSE Tyler was raked and the ball went else where.
I'd like to believe that he didn't do it on purpose though.
edit: hell roy doesn't think he did it on purpose
"I don't think there is any intentional planned thing, 'I'm going to go get the guy,' " Williams said. "I think it was an unfortunate thing that happened during the game."

Yea, at first I thought the foul was going to be called on Johnson because I didn't have a very good view from the risers. I saw what he did and not really what Gerald did. That made me mad because I thought K sent the benchwarmer in as a goon when I saw Tyler go down. I mean, Johnson fouled him pretty hard too; he got a nice push and, like you said, a pretty solid hit on the arm.
I'm all for unbiased opinions. I didn't mind Henderson because he's tight with Wayne and it seems some other Heels too, and he's a good player without the attitude of a typical dookie (see, we don't hate all of 'em, there's reasons), but I'm afraid he's a marked man for the rest of his career, and dare I say life? Probably in Chapel Hill.

Yea, but what else is he supposed to say? It's not like he's K....
I was at the press conference and he was very PC and careful about the subject. He obviously wasn't too happy about Mike's comments though.

This is so funny. I'm watching the YouTube that some of you posted on the Henderson/Hansbrough exchange. Billy Packer. What a prick man. Over and over again, he tells us about how it was unintentional. And THEN, he starts getting on the refs for taking TOO MUCH TIME. I applaud the refs! You guys take as much time as you need to make sure you got the call right. My Goodness. What a complete douche.

I think the foul was supposed to be on Johnson but then Tyler hit the floor and they forgot about it.
But Packer was right, why was he on the floor? I know its Dook and its their rival and you're sticking it to them but...14.5 left to go? Get the scrubs out there. Luckily he can still play, what if he comes down wrong on his knee and he tears something? His name changes from Tyler Hansburogh to Booby Miles.
There is a point in time where it goes from sticking it to your rival and plain stupidity. No one has more of a reason to stick it to Dook as UNC does and the other way around, but IMO Roy dropped the ball on this one.

Roy left him in there because of the timeout Coach K had called...
"Coach K said that the game was over and the starters shouldn't have been in. Then why did you call a timeout with :50 left? Because the game wasn't over, and that's why Roy Williams had his guy in."
I have no problem with Roy keeping Tyler in...he's an intense player playing in an intense rivalry game. It wouldn't have pissed me off any less if Henderson had taken a cheap shot on Dion Thompson or someone else off the bench. He should no better and take responsibility for his actions.

oh know I agree that it wouldn't have been any less controversial had it been a no one on UNC's bench. But again, Tyler is a reason why they're the #1 team in the ACC. Game is over. Regular season championship is wrapped up. get him off the floor, get someone who isn't going to be a key cog in a postseason run out there to get popped in the nose. Not one of your most valuable players.

I agree that the only reason its such a big deal is because it happened to Psycho T. Again though, I can't value one's players well being over another's, even if he is the star of the team. Henderson acted out of frustration and someone got hurt, it just happened to be Hansbrough.

Houston Chronicle for example. Before A&M beat Kansas, we would win some big conference games, and the next day the lead College Hoops story is a story about the upcoming texas game and something on durant. A&M would be bumped to a box score and AP recap of the game at best the following day when they had a game and texas didn't. Then don't even get me started on Terrance friggin Harris and the garbage he throws out there.

I got this one off the rivals board I read a lot......
Name this basketball coach
"Found this interesting...
a) native Texan
b) graduated from Southwest Texas State
c) has built a basketball program from absolutely nothing to a conference championship contender
d) has winning credentials in three levels, including championships at the HS and JC level
e) relentless recruiter
f) coaches at Texas A&M....
...in Corpus Christi.
You probably already guessed it, but Ronnie Arrow has TAMU-CC on track for their first NCAA tourney bid this year. The only reason they haven't been in it before is because they have only been playing D-1 Bball for seven years and spent the first six of it as an independent. In 2006-07, their first year in the Southland Conference, they've won the regular season title and are favorites to win the conference tourney with a record of 23-6 (14-2).
I remember reading about his teams at San Jacinto JC during the '80s, where he led them to a 302-48 record with 10 Texas JC championships and national JC championships in '83, '84 and '86. He went on to coach at South Alabama, where he took them to the NCAA tourney 2x, and in 1989 upset Alabama in the opening round and in the second round led eventual champ Michigan (w/ Glen Rice and Rumeal Robinson) at halftime before losing 91-82.
In 1994-1995, he was fired four games into the season at USA. He then left coaching for 4 years until 1999 when he was hired as the first BB coach at TAMU-CC. Since then, he's posted notable upsets including Baylor, Florida State, Texas Tech and of course The Game Which Shall Not Be Named.
So my questions are, for those that know a little more about Ronnie Arrow: why was he fired from South Alabama? I can't find that info anywhere."

Regardless, I'm buying Maryland and Kansas. Definitely selling Nevada and Washington State. I don't know, I think that S.Illinois team is solid; I wasn't able to see it, but I hear they played just horrible in the game vs. Creighton. Also gotta buy A&M. Playing fantastic basketball, I really like them. I'm staying mum on those Big Ten teams though.
So far, the bubble has stayed very large. Still no upsets in the conference tourneys that cost at-large bids. And today is Tuesday. Butler's GOTTA come through tonight. Let's go Bulldogs!

Yeah it sucked seeing that, but I guess I can't complain with BCG getting COY over Barnes. IMO I think Law should have gotten BigXII POY and barnes get COY.
They got it right. Law should be second in the nation for POY, unfortunately that also means he's second in his own conference this year.
There will be a figurative "George Mason" in the tournament though. In fact I'm gonna start using it as a verb. Did you see Florida get George Masoned by VCU?:lol
That is going to get so annoying. I've already had enough of it. At halftime of one of the games this weekend CBS announcers were saying it's likely we have another "George Mason" this year. It's likely another double digit seed makes the Final Four this year? Orly? No, sorry guys.
I think the foul was supposed to be on Johnson but then Tyler hit the floor and they forgot about it.

Well, Roy had Mike Copeland sitting at halfcourt ready to sub in for Hansbrough, but he was shooting at the time and you can't sub for the shooter unless he misses the second one. Also, it's on the defense to wave the white flag first, yet Coach K was still calling timeouts, pressing and fouling. Roy is well aware of the 8 in 17 seconds incident, which was without the three-point line, so if Ratface isn't calling off the dogs I can see why he's hesitant. I wish Hansbrough would have been out at the time, but I still don't see why that means Roy is to blame. Roy didn't go at Hansbrough's face with a loaded elbow. The only one to blame is Henderson.

Exactly. Coach K still had all his starters in. Except for the fact that Paulus and McRoberts had just fouled out within 5 seconds of Tyler shooting the free throws. Roy sees these guys going to the bench, sends Copeland to the scorer's table, Tyler keeps playing hard and gets fouled. Shoots free throws and continues to compete. I don't buy this kick it out garbage. He was surrounded by players and this guy's mentality is "kill" when he has the ball 2 feet from the basket.
No more Roy's fault than K's. K just had his starters fouling out.

Look at my man here! About time somebody comes up with something interesting! You know what the scary thing is, and maybe Primo knows it: Xavier is 1-3 vs. STL since they joined the A-10 in 05-06. This is a very legitimate A-10 bracket. Well done Primo!

OK, time for me to weigh in. Listen, college hoop is a business. Guys don't owe anybody anything. Unless it's like a 40-point game (and apparently the only time that happens is when Kansas plays Nebraska :lol ), I have no problem with starters being in the game. At the high school level, it's different. The last guy on a high school team isn't going to be playing college ball, so it's probably his last time playing organized. So when you can get that last kid in there, you do it. In college, you don't owe that to the walk-ons. They know their roles, and hopefully they fill them to a 'T'. But in a 14-point game in which the other team hasn't thrown up the "surrender flag", I got no problem with UNC starters being in the game.
And I was even more pissed off at the Nuggets/Knicks brawl a few months ago. I'm a "Knicks fan", I guess. I haven't been able to watch a game since 2000, because the pro game just doesn't appeal to me like it did when my heroes (Ewing and Starks) ruled the Garden. But you got freaking Isaiah Thomas complaining that the Nuggets shouldn't have their starters in. Listen you failure of a head coach, GM, etc. In case you didn't notice, the NBA is a business. Coaches can play whoever they want, whenever they want. Of course they run the risk of something happening, such as what happened to Carmelo, or Hansbrough. But if a coach is willing to take the risk, more power to him. In the high school game, opposing coaches should call off the dogs so his end of bench guys can get some PT. In college and the pros, that rule does not apply. I officially lost what little respect I had for Isaiah Thomas after the Knicks/Nuggets game because of his whining like a little baby. Grrr. Now I'm all pissed off. :mad :BANG
(And a note: Apologies go out to the Cornhusker on this board, it seems I've bashed Nebraska a few times without giving you a shoutout. All in good fun man. How bout that Tommy Frazier?)
