Goddamn 8/9. Why? Why did we have to out and play like shit against Rhode Island? And why did we have to give the committee reason to do this to us? I hate my life....
Oh wait. Hold on. We're playing in Lexington? Like, 65 miles from Xavier's campus? Hmmm. We're playing BYU, for the opportunity to play the team everybody at Xavier hates, Ohio State? Excuse me, THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY? You mean, the guy who lied to Xavier, the media, and his own mother, saying he was going to stay at Xavier after coaching the squad to the 2004 Elite Eight? Thad Matta? That guy? We get to play him? We have the opportunity to play arguably the best team in the country, with arguably the second best player in the country? OH SHIT! IT'S ON! I did my 1st round...I might change a few during the coming days.
I have Duke in the 2nd round, probably sweet 16. I'm not convinced they're THAT bad :lol I do have Wright St. beating Pitt. That's the only 14 I have winning so far, only because Aaron Gray is one inconsistent mofo, and DeShaun Wood impressed me. He's a Lawson type guy that can run you out of the game.
I'm not picking ODU to beat Butler, I think Butler can shoot themselves into a win. It'll be tight tough, obviously I'm tossing up that one.
I have two 12's beating a 5. One is Long Beach State over Tennessee. LBSU has some good big guys and a pretty athletic backcourt that can run with Tennessee. The other is Illinois, because I personally think VT is weak offensively.
I went with the crowd and picked Winthrop over ND. I don't think ND brings anything to the table defensively while Winthrop brings in solid shooters. Another 6-11 upset I have is Stanford. I just think they're a solid team and will play Louisville into a great highly contested game.
10/7 matchups are always tough. I picked GT to beat UNLV, frankly because they're the better team, as well as Texas Tech over BC. I've seen enough of Gonzaga to know they're not beating Indiana. Creighton sucks.
I hate 8/9's. Always tossups. I'm a Pac-10 homer so I picked Arizona. I love Neitzel, so I went with MSU. I want Tubby fired so Jared is happy, so I went Villanova (and I think they're a better team), and I haven't seen either BYU or Xavier, so I picked X because I love Bob.
Surprisingly I have all 4's winning. Virginia and Maryland are vulnerable but I'm sure they'll get the job done. Holy Cross/So Ill is a tossup. Haven't seen enough of either, so I went with the Salukis.
1's and 2's look pretty safe :lol The only thing remotely close to vulnerable is Memphis. But eh.....

So what's everyone think of the committee this year?
I think they made a few mistakes on who got in and who got left out which happens every year.
However, I think some of the sites and some of the seedings are horrible. This could be the worse seeded tournement I've ever seen. Has anyone on the committee watched anything except the conference tournements? How is the AD from Princeton the head of the committee? I think they need to stick to academics.

GavMan33
03-11-2007, 09:56 PM
I'll be honest. After that third bracket came up and our name still didn't get called, I got nervous. I was thinking where we could come up. After thinking about it, I remembered GW got an 11-seed as the automatic out of the A-10; we were going to be higher than that. Then I thought they still had the Lexington site to do. And I knew Ohio St. was the #1 in that region, and that they were playing in Lexington. Then it hit me. And I was disappointed after it came up for about 3 or 4 minutes.
But what an opportunity. We always want to play the big boys. The Buckeyes are just the REALLY big boys. Let's take care of business on Thursday vs. BYU, and then let's go at it!
I did say that it would be a very big snub if Xavier did not get in. Xavier did get in, but there were still snubs. How about Syracuse? Trying to keep my bias out of it. They were 3-7 vs. Top 50 teams. 3 out of 10 isn't very good against "good" teams. Xavier did the same amount of damage vs. the Top 50 (3 wins) in half as many games (5 games). Coach Boheim was just on ESPN; he talked about how they had a tough nonconference, playing Drexel, Wichita State, and Oklahoma State. "It's not our fault they didn't play well at the end of the year." (Referring to the Cowboys) All 3 of those teams were left out of the tournament, and Drexel probably gets in before you do. It seems the committee sent out a message to the Orange; if you're going to play that horrifically weak nonconference schedule in which you don't leave home and don't play good teams, you BETTER win all of them and you BETTER win the games you're supposed to win in conference (ie-St. John's, UConn).
Drexel. It seems their problem was the in-conference performance. 13-5 vs. the CAA, including 0-4 vs. VCU and ODU. I can see where they could get left out, DESPITE all of the great out-of-conference wins. That's just too bad to see. They went on the road to Syracuse, and won; they went to Villanova, and won; they went to St. Joe's, and won; they went to Creighton, and won. It's a shame.
EDIT: After all my hate vs. Cuse, I still believe they still should have probably been in....

Without giving too much away what do people like to use as strategies in making their picks? I've always liked going with the teams with the best player and teams with experienced guards while staying away from inexperience and teams without a star.
I also like to not look at matchups at first, and instead focus on the individual teams.

Texas is one of those bracket busters...... they could get to the Final Four or bow out in the second round. from a strategy standpoint, i'll have them losing in the third or fourth round, that way an early upset doesn't kill me down the road.

not sure if this has been covered or not, but anyone else find it kind of fucked up that if #1 seed KU and #2 seed UCLA meet that they'll play in San Jose, CA? that's not really a reward for a #1 seed.....
I've heard the committee doesn't project out to elite eight potentials.

Texas is one of those bracket busters...... they could get to the Final Four or bow out in the second round. from a strategy standpoint, i'll have them losing in the third or fourth round, that way an early upset doesn't kill me down the road.
I sure hope that's right.

this is definetely a tough game to pick. agree 100% this wil be the regional final cuz this is a very weak region. I love ohio state but if it comes down to it i think A&M wins because they have the advantage of playing a virtual home game in san antonio, but if they dont get there then id have to take ohio state

as far as some off the top of my head upset potential
1.ODU over butler
2.Winthrop over ND
3. GT over Unlv then beating wisconsin
4.Oral Roberts over WSU
5. Long beach state over tennesse not too sure
6. Stanford over lousiville
7. VCU over Duke
8.Albany over Virginia

I just looked at the sweet 16 teams from last year and how they did in conference tournaments. No team in the sweet 16 last year played 4 games in their tournament. 8 of the 16 played in their championship game. Only 5 of the 11 power conference teams in the 16 played in their chamionship. Of teams from the power conferences who played 4 games in their tournements, they were 1-2. Both teams in the championship played in conference championship. If you remove those two teams from the group of the 11 (S. Carolina didn't make the tournement) the other 9 teams went 9-9 in the big dance.
*edit*
Only 3 of the 16 final teams went out in the quarterfinals of their conference tournement (all 3 were in the first game).

Yeah, that's true. I mean look at Florida, even. They went on a cold streak not too long ago but now they look like they're ready to roll through the tournament like they did last year.
The only real teams that have REALLY impressed me though are Florida, Kansas, Georgetown, and Ohio State.

Georgia, Ole Miss, Arkansas....
Eh, no doubt they're good, hell even great, but I don't think there's been any indication in the SEC tourney whether they'll play as dominant against teams who will actually challenge them. I think labeling them as unstoppable is pushing it.

Same here.
I originally had three Big XII teams... then I changed.
REGION BY REGION BREAKDOWN
ST. LOUIS
-I am not sold on Florida. I just don't like them this year. But I keep looking in that region to see who will take them down. Butler? Maybe, but it is a stretch. So I went with a team I said I wouldn't go with - Wisconsin in the Final Four. I also went against this year's popular Cindy. I took Notre Dame over Winthrop and even went with the Irish over Oregon. I don't like taking a hot team that had a serious slump.
WISCONSIN
SAN JOSE
-I always try to fight the urge to pick Kansas. But again, who is there to beat them? They are loaded with talent, but Bill Self's track record makes me skeptical. I have VCU over Duke and Indiana over UCLA in round 2. For some reason, I always go with the Hoosiers to the 16... I have no idea why. I wanted to take Pitt over KU, but I went with the Jayhawks.
KANSAS
EAST RUTHERFORD
-Anyone else having serious Cuse in 2003 flashbacks with this region? Superfrosh going to lead his team to the title? I know I am. Georgetown is the trendy pick here, but I'm not sold. I even tinkered with the idea of my Cindy - ORU - taking them down in the 16. But in the 8 I have Texas beating the Hoyas in a thiller. Durant is too good not to take this team to the final four.
TEXAS
SAN ANTONIO
-Easy region here, I thought. Ohio St has lost to three clubs - Florida, North Carolina and Wisconsin, all on the road. They are very good. Plus, who doesn't want to see an Oden - Durant showdown? Plus, this region has some poor high seeds. Tennessee and Virginia? Who do you take going to the 16 there? I've got the Cavs, but I don't like it. Take NEVADA too the round of 16. Memphis hasn't played anyone and Nick Fazekas is dang good. It comes down to A&M and Ohio St. I am taking the Buckeyes because of who they have played.
OHIO STATE
I don't know if anyone read that, but that is what I am going with.

Hasn't Kentucky been everyone's bitch though? :confused ;)

My only problem with Tex-ass is they've had two HUGE collapses to KU late in the season. If you want to win a national championship you have close out games like that against big teams.
Also I don't see a Gerry McNamara or Hakim Warrick on Tex-ass' team.
Durant is good but he can't do it all by himself and I don't think his supporting cast is good enough to pick him up.

sorry about that man. i can't believe they didn't get in. more than that, i can't believe some of the teams that did get in ahead of them. the only Big East team in history to go 10-6 and not make the tourney. i just don't get it.... :confused
And have 20 wins.
Seton Hall went 10-6 in the league a few years ago and did not make it as well as someone else recently.
However, we are the first team from a major conference to go 10-6 in conference, have at least 21 wins and not make the tournament. Biggest load of horse shit ever.
And the commissioner of the selection committee had no answer. He completely danced around the questions put to him. I would be upset, however content, if he could have given us a reason. But his answer was that they looked at the whole body of work. Really? What the hell did you see, then?

That is tough, but I think the Jayhawks play defense as tough as the Bruins and UCLA has nobody that can stop Julian Wright.
I also think Hansbrough sheds the mask midway through the first half against Texas.

I secretly like Jake's pick of Virginia. I have the high seeds doing really well, which is scary. I think I need to find another 4 or 5 that I like....
I am going to lose my mind over this.
i originally had vcu as well, but then thought, "wait, it's fucking duke." love 'em or hate 'em, they'll find a way to win at least one game. i have the dookies losing to pitt in the second round.

is it just me, or did the #1's get kinda screwed in locations.
florida is in the midwest with wisconsin. where's the regional? st. louis - a midwest city.
kansas with ucla. regional? san jose, ca
unc with gtown. regional? east rutherford, nj
osu with memphis/a&m. regional? san antonio
this has probably been discussed already, but the #2 seeds (a&m's a 3) have virtual home games in the regional finals. kinda sucks for the #1's.
edit: sucks for me, too. do i think ucla can beat kansas? probably not. can ucla beat kansas in california? i'd lean towards yes on that one. kansas won't have a single fan in those stands rooting for them.

Come one, come all to the 2nd best pick ‘em tournament that you’ll ever enter. It’s the 2007 antsmarching.org NIT pick ‘em challenge. That’s right, it’s a pick ‘em tournament for those of you who it seems year in and year out can never do well in the big dance. Here’s a chance to drop down a level, sharpen the picking tools and pick the best of the rest. If you feel like you got snubbed in the Championship Week Challenge, get your redemption in the NIT pick ‘em challenge. They call the winner of the NIT the 66th best team in the nation, but if you win we’ll call you #2 in our hearts.
Now in honor of the NIT tournament being the second best March postseason tournament out there, I’m naming each bracket for those loveable losers. You know, those teams who just could never seem to get it done when it counted.
In the Buffalo Bills Region:
1) MISSISSIPPI ST. (18-12) vs. 8) Mississippi Valley St. (18-14)
4) BRADLEY (21-12) vs. 5) Providence (18-12)
3) MICHIGAN (21-12) vs. 6) Utah St. (23-10)
2) FLORIDA ST. (20-12) vs. 7) Toledo (19-12)
In the Chicago Cubs Region:
1) WEST VIRGINIA (22-9) vs. 8) Delaware St. (21-11)
4) UMASS (23-8) vs. 5) Alabama (20-11)
3) DREXEL (23-8) vs. 6) NC St. (18-15)
2) OKLAHOMA ST. (22-11) vs. 7) Marist (24-8)
In the Golden State Warriors Region:
1) AIR FORCE (23-8) vs. 8) Austin Peay (21-11)
4) GEORGIA (18-13) vs. 5) Fresno St. (22-9)
3) DEPAUL (18-13) vs. 6) Hofstra (22-9)
2) KANSAS ST. (22-10) vs. 7) Vermont (25-6)
In the St. Louis Blues Region:
1) CLEMSON (21-10) vs. 8) East Tennessee St. (24-9)
4) OLE MISS (20-11) vs. 5) Appalachian St. (25-7)
3) MISSOURI ST. (22-10) vs. 6) San Diego St. (21-10)
2) SYRACUSE (22-10) vs. 7) South Alabama (20-11)
The Final 4:
Buffalo Bills region vs. Chicago Cubs Region
Golden St. Warriors region vs. St. Louis Blues Region
Very simple pick ‘em rules:
Pick the winners.
See, doesn’t get anymore simple than that.
Scoring:
1pt – 1st round
2pts – 2nd round
4pts – 3rd round
8pts – 4th round
16pts – Championship
Also predict the final score of the championship game. We’ll use that as the tiebreaker. We’ll go on scoring differential. If Delaware St. beats Syracuse in the championship game by 20 and two people are tied who ever comes closest to a 20 point differential we’ll declare them the “champion.” If there’s still a tie after that, fuck it, we have co-champions. It still means you’re second best, what does it matter if you’re second best tied with someone else.
I’ll keep track of scores.
Get your picks in soon, NIT games start tomorrow night.
Brackets can be viewed here:

Illinois, I think we can all agree, had to be one of the Last Four In. So let's take a look at their nonconference:
They played Austin Peay (who I believe is an NIT team?), they played Jackson St. (an NCAA team), they played Florida A&M (an NCAA team), and they played Miami (OH) (also an NCAA team). You want big boys? Well first, they went to Bradley. Then they played Maryland and then went to Arizona. Lastly, they went to Missouri, and then played Xavier in Cincinnati. I'd say that's a pretty solid nonconference schedule, especially for a BCS Conference team. So I counted 6 NCAA team in the nonconference.
Syracuse. They played Penn (an NCAA team out of the Ivy League), and Holy Cross (winners of the Patriot League). Wichita St. and Oklahoma St. did not pan out (both losses). I also discount the argument for the game vs. Drexel, because I would say Drexel is in line for an at-large before the Orange. Also played teams like Colgate, Baylor, Hofstra, and St. Bonaventure. Two NCAA teams in the nonconference.
That said, I was sure the win vs. Georgetown a few weeks back punched their ticket to the dance. Wins @ Marquette and vs. Villanova were big early in the Big East schedule. I'm not sure, but I think those three wins account for all of their Top 50 wins. They won five in a row late, culminating in the win over the Hoyas, but the other four were St. John's, South Florida, UConn, and Providence. I would say the unbalanced schedule has a lot to do with the 10-6 Big East record. Throw in a loss @ St. John's and a loss @ UConn, and I can see the omission or the Orange....

But neither are tournament teams when it all comes down to it. You've got to get out and play some quality teams out of New York.
At the time they were quality teams. That is what I am trying to say.

Who was the biggest snub this year?
I would say that Drexel is a bigger snub than Syracuse but neither of them should be left out.

Yeah, I see what you are saying. I think not going out of state is a much better problem than the teams they played.

That would be foolish. Why do you think Creighton has such good support?

Kansas State.
No way. They had a nice conference record, but just beat up on the bottomfeeders of the Big 12. KSU was just 2-5 against the RPI Top 50 and had an absolutely horrid strength of schedule.

Actually you'll third it...I believe Bryan had them as well.

Kansas State.
I don't think the 88th ranked SOS cuts it. The Bill Snyder school of scheduling does not translate to the hardwood.

Finishing up my bracket right now.
-The Kansas-UCLA pick is a tough one (game is in San Jose).
-I think Wash St. could upset Georgetown
Tough first round picks for me: Marquette/Mich St, Notre Dame/Winthrop, Texas Tech/BC, USC/Ark, Maryland/Davidson, Georgia Tech/UNLV.

I'm tempted to pick Albany over Virginia....but no, I don't have a 13 beating a 4.

alright one of the few first round games im having trouble picking is the kentucky vs villanova game. im aware that randolph morris is doing really well, but then i also know that villanova has a really good freshman guard and a good forward who was hurt all of last year when they made the run in the tourney last year. so which team have you guys choices kentucky or villanova?

Very tight game. I like Nova- best free throw shooting team in the country. Always good in close games.

I wanna put them in there but I'm skeptical because of the way they played down the stretch. I think the Ohio St. game will be a tough matchup for them...assuming the two play each other.

the games in San Antonio (if they played). It will be good advantage for A&M playing in the Alamodome.

I've got'em in with UNC, Florida and KU. :BANG
Yea, 3 #1s, but this is one of the most top-heavy years that I can ever remember. There's only about 8-11 teams that have any shot at winning it.
