Hey guys, V-Tech played Virginia last night, Miami has Wake this weekend, do you think the head coaches of both schools were pushing to go to the ACC?

How does UA finish the year? Top 25? Top 10?
I'd say Top 15.
They'll probably lose once more in conference and could get knocked off in the conference tourney. And they have every opportunity to get to the Elite 8, I think. Probably no further without some luck.

i doubt they were even asked. that move was made more for football than basketball. the fact that they're both playing well so far is a bonus though. Kind of like the 1992 season when FSU joined the ACC (for football purposes) and they finished second in the ACC in basketball their first year in.

they say tradition. not being able to play every team twice a year. there is some truth to that, but other conferences have had to deal with the same thing. I think they were at a point when they didn't think football programs could get much worse.........then Va Tech and Miami show up.

UA this year is a typical UA team. If they get hot, they have enough talent that they could beat anyone. But they are still the kind of team that could take a night off and lose to No. 15 seeded Santa Clara :BANG

That game still haunts me to this day! It's up there with the Rick Fox (UNC) buzzer beater layup to knock a ranked #1 and seeded #1 OU team out of the tournament in the second round of the 1990 tournament. What are the odds that KU, a questionable team for the tournament to begin with (21-11) and a team that OU had already beaten twice that season, makes that run with the Final Four just happening to be at Kemper Arena in Kansas City? Other then this years Orange Bowl OU is always getting shafted in championship game locations.
1. 88' Orange Bowl vs. Miami on there home field, the Orange Bowl: OU loses 20-14
2. 88' Final Four vs. Kansas at Kemper: OU loses 83-79
3. 2001 Orange Bowl vs. Florida State at the Orange Bowl: OU wins 13-2
4. 2004 Sugar Bowl vs. LSU in New Orleans: OU loses 21-14
If these games are played at anything close to a neutral site, which these were not, OU would have probably one all three that they lost.
That 88' team is one the great teams to not win the national championship. Up there with Houston (Drexler and Olajuwon), UNLV (the repeat effort with Larry Johnson, Stacy Augmon, Greg Anthony), and Michigan (Fab Five).
Check out some of the scores from that season. Billy (Tubbs) Ball was great!

2000 and 2001 felt close to the old rivalry, but this years game sure didn't. I think more then only playing twice every four years is that it's just not the same when one or both programs are down. We are used to both teams being ranked in the top 10 every year with the Orange Bowl at stake like in the Big 8 days.

They aren't a very business-like team. For example, Illinois approaches every game with the same intensity, not too up and not too down. You can see how well that pays off. The players at Arizona made no secret of the facts that they'd been looking to this Washington game all year, and especially since beating UCLA a couple weeks ago. They won on the road against the Oregon schools and they beat Washington last night, but there's no way they'll come out playing intense against Washington St. tomorrow. (Plus, they never seem to play as well in day games as they do at night.) They're at home so they should get by tomorrow, but it may be closer than it ought to be.

I think that he can do some good things. I was really pleased with him as the choice after I got over the fact that they were not going to keep Bo Pelini. I'm more interested in seeing them balance the offense and continue to build a strong defense squad like the Blackshirts of the mid 90s.
I think more then only playing twice every four years is that it's just not the same when one or both programs are down. We are used to both teams being ranked in the top 10 every year with the Orange Bowl at stake like in the Big 8 days.
Yup. The hope is that they will both be in the upper eschelon of college football soon. Obviously Oklahoma is there right now and I really do believe that once Callahan gets some players (what a recruiting class it is looking like this year!) that are fit to play his system I think that we will see some great things out of Lincoln.
And if Texas could win big games with some consistancy then we would have an amazing trip with K State looking to break into the pack. The conference as a whole has so much potential that it really is sickening.

It was more than two schools. Basically it was all the basketball coaches vs. the college presidents. Even basketball coaches from outside the conference made comments about so obviously choosing the future of the conference. The decision was presidents and chancellors telling their basketball programs that they weren't good enough to continue as the face of the ACC.
P.S. Sorry I know that post was a while ago, but I had to say something.:rolleyes

ISU beats OU by 8.
OU was down 6 at half and down 15 right out of the half. Went on a run and got to within 4 with about 8 minutes left, but that was it. Played like crap. Not intensity, no fire, a ton of turnovers, etc. Combine that with the fact that Ames is a really difficult place to play and you get a loss. Probably not a bad loss though. It will give Kelvin and the team something to really focus on. They were probably a little to fat after ten straight wins.

Rock Chalk Chant history (http://www.rockchalk.com/john/john/rock.html)
As for the Phog, Allen Fieldhouse is named after Dr. Forrest "Phog" Allen. Allen was the KU coach for 39 years, after learning the game from it's inventor, Dr. James Naismith (the only coach at KU to have a losing record). At KU, Allen played alongside Adolf Rupp and coached Dean Smith, among others. Allen was instrumental in making basketball a medal sport in the Olympics, and was a huge supporter of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
There is a banner that hangs in the Fieldhouse which says "Pay Heed to All Who Enter: Beware of the Phog." It aludes to the history of the building, and that "Phog's ghost" helps KU during games.
Someone else could probably do a better job of explaining it. But that's two of our traditions at KU.

I think the ACC is shaping up similar to the way many thought just with different teams in different positions. Preseason everyone thought UNC, Wake, and Ga Tech would be the elite and then there would be about five teams beating up on each other with a couple at the bottom. Here's hot it looks as of now.
Elite: UNC, Wake, Duke
Teams beating up on each other: Maryland, Ga Tech, NC State, Florida St, Miami, and Va Tech (with Miami and Va Tech suprises in that category)
Bottom: Virginia and Clemson

I read today that some people think Roy isn't starting Marvin Williams to keep him from entering the draft this year. That's so riduculous. Which at minimum three year starter in the front court is Roy supposed to bench, Jawad (who is scoring over 16 a game and one of the team's biggest leaders) or May (just 15 and 9 in less than 24 minutes). It would be stupid to start him over Manuel because of their offense is so much effective when you have three smaller and quicker guys on the court. Plus, why switch it up right now and risk losing chemistry?

Wow. So Syracuse sucked. That is about all I can say about their performance. No one showed up to play. No one at all. After we went up by 17, the team decided that they were going to skate away with this one and stopped playing. They simply stopped wanting it. No one aside from Gerry and Hakim wanted to score, that is a problem.
Josh Pace and Billy Edelin had no effect what so ever in trying to bring the ball inside, and Nichols and McCroskey couldn't shoot. The fact that Roberts looked hesitant and they never worked the inside of the zone that was played in the second half was a problem. The stat that tells all, aside from Warrick and McNamara, the team was averaging 41.5 points a game. Against Pitt, they accounted for 18. As Jimmy has said all year, the Sophomores need to step it up.
There are a couple of good things that will come out of this loss however. First, the fact that they needed a wake up call. It would have been great to keep on wining, but hopefully they will realize that anyone can lose in this league and it is incredibly difficult to beat any team on the road in the Big East. Second, we have a chance for redemption (and Boeheim's #700) against Pitt in the Dome on Valentine's Day.
And I think we drop to 9.

By the way, couldnt get enough of the "love" Jay Bilas was getting at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday for College Gameday...everytime he mentioned UNC, the boos came ringing in, loud and abbundant. Digger even gave him some shit for it... and Bilas goes, no, theyre just canting "Moody"
WRONG. theyre reminding you on how big of a homer you are for the ACC. Then he goes ahead and calls Lucas the best player in the Big XII. I'm glad he got an upclose view of Big Dub's exhibition.

I'm not a fan of UNC of Duke but I can tell you that there is no bigger game on a national or local scale than UNC/Duke, especially when they are both ranked high. hell, your location is Lexington, wouldn't expect for you to hear about anything but the Wildcats around there. although i would say UNC-2, Duke-3 with everyone in Bristol praying for an Illinois loss this week to create the dream matchup for Feb. 9th that Dick Vitale would cream himself over is very likely......

I think the biggest flaw in Redick's game is relying too much on the three-point shot. He is one of the best in the nation at dialing it up from long distance, yet is nowhere near the top of the nation in shooting percentage. Meanwhile, Redick is one of the best at hitting free throws also. He has shot about 40 less free throws than treys. When you are that good from the stripe that shouldn't happen. If he had better shot selection on his 3's and instead got to the free throw line more often he'd be even better than he is now.

That's the flaw. No denying it. However no one can complain that he's shooting 43% from the field and 43% from the arc. There aren't many guys that can do that, and Duke has still shot 124 more FT's than their opponent.
Edit: It's the overall shot selection, not just on the threes. :rolleyes

Nothing like 10,000 people hanging out in the Mandalay Bay Sportsbook chanting "JASPERS, JASPERS, JASPERS" rooting for upsets left and right. I knew eventually we'd have to disagree with something.... :lol the record numbers don't lie in favor for GTech at this point and certainly within the ACC, but their RPI is still pretty solid at #23. This is the reason they are still ranked and rightfully so....the benefit of doubt comes from being a Final 4 team last year (see UConn, where the benfit is even worse)
The voters certainly won't go out of their way to favor the Ramblin' Wreck, hell, until the past couple years, they hadnt even made a tourney since Starbury. I just feel voters arent ready to jump on Witchta State or Texas El Paso bandwagon and put them in the polls just yet. UNC fans will never accept that Santa Clara loss. Theyre not even an NIT team right now, but you try to justify it by Kansas losing to 'Nova. :lol Try again. McCants could have sat that game out too, I'd still expect UNC to win that game by 10.

Yes, it is a game they should have won with or without Felton, but the Santa Clara game isn't how the Heels season has or will be defined this year. It's their 8 victories by more than 30 points that has.

Was there last year for opening weekend.... ranks right up there with the best sports moments in my life. Nothing like 10,000 people hanging out in the Mandalay Bay Sportsbook chanting "JASPERS, JASPERS, JASPERS" rooting for upsets left and right. Duke was favored by 49 last year in the first round... won by 50, the place errupted like it was New Years in Time Square.
It's better than being at the game, theyve got giant movie screens with each game on.... I planned on heading back this year, but I need detox from Vegas for awhile.... :evil

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance yet to see Mich. State play this year. I know they got beat at Duke earlier in the year and almost stole one up at Wisconsin, but are they as tough as Wisconsin at home? It looks like matchup-wise it seems to be pretty even between them and the Illini. I think Illinois guard play is a little better, but it looks like Mich. State may have the edge when it comes to the front line. Anybody else had a chance to see them play yet that would have a better idea?

People in both the national and regional media called Coach Snyder "Duke's Golden Boy" (among other variations) when e he first came to Mizzou(keep in mind we hired him over Bill Self who has since coached at our 2 biggest hoops rivals, kU and Illinois, and has yet to lose a game to us). The thinking at the time was that having played for and coached under Coach K that Coach Snyder(while unproven as an HC) would be an awesome coach and would be the heir apparent when Coach K decides to step down. Needless to say Coach Snyders record and off court actions have severly tarnished his golden boy image. I can't imagine Coach Snyder getting a job at a school even close to Mizzou's standards(even our standards before he came here) and think that his trip to Duke, if ever, will not be nearly as direct of a route as he planned.

Go Illini! people around here and on ESPN are chomping at the bit to make the Tarholes #1. It makes me fucking sick to watch Digger Phelps try to move UNC past Illinois on the ESPN poll last night to #1. "UNC is the most talented team in the country....blah, blah, blah" "UNC has the most depth.....blah,blah,blah"
Has anyone besides me noticed that they also have TWO FUCKING LOSSES? Yes, UNC is good. Yes, they have eight wins by thirty points or more. Both of their losses were double digits as well (a fact that seems to be forgotten by the tarhole faithful). Illinois and UNC have one common opponent. Wake Forest.

While some on ESPN are touting the Heels at #1 have never argued that UNC deserves to be ranked higher than Illinois. Do I believe UNC is more talented and would beat Illinois on a neutral floor? Yes. However, the Illini have nothing this year but prove that they deserved to be the top ranked team in the nation by a unanimous vote.

Last night at half time of the KU/Mizzou game, they broke out velcro-board Top 25. They proceeded to go through 1-5, 6-10, etc.. and ask each "expert" what they would change right now. Digger Phelps went to switch UNC and Illinois on the board but was stopped my Mike Jarvis who said something to the effect of "Digger, they're good....but i for one happen to like those zeros on Illinois and BC's record." If you're picking who you think will win it all, go ahead and "rah-rah caro-lina-lina" but if you're picking who's #1 now, there's no question.

The Syracuse region looks tougher than the rest. Your picks are pretty close to mine, but I don't see Illinois getting beat if they are in the Chicago region. The second weekend is like home games for them. I don't care what you've earned in the regular season no team should play that close to home the second weekend of the tourny.

If the Big Ten truly is pathetic, however, that makes Illinois much more likely to run the table. I don't care what conference you play in, if you run the table you get a No. 1 seed. Or else you figure Illinois is vastly overrated (despite their drubbing of Wake) and will stumble ... probably several times to knock them from a 1 seed.
You may be right with BC, though. The toughest part of their schedule is still coming up and it wouldn't be at all shameful for them to finish with anywhere from 2-4 losses. That would make them either a weak 2 or a solid 3 seed, most likely.

The middle of the ACC is pretty much like every other conference. Anyone can pound on anyone.

here's a good read for you Illinois fans this morning. written by the one and only Dukie V after last nights game, talking out of the side of his mouth he obviously didn't talk out of during the game last night.................."what doubters?"

I think they'll run the regular season undefeated, catch a loss in the Big 10 tourney, still get a one seed, make it to the final four and get beat there.

I was thinking the same yesterday, then i read where all of their games will likely be.
rounds 1 & 2 - Indianapolis
rounds 3 & 4 - Chicago
Final Four - St. Louis
i think they will have a huge advantage in an elite eight game played in Chicago (kind of like Duke playing at Madison Square Garden:lol )

Bracketology has them in OK City to for Rounds 1 & 2, but ESPN has been all over the Indy-Chicago-StL route for the Illini. They wouldn't even have to get on an airplane.

I figure if someone's gonna beat them, why not the guy who recruited them and coached them for a couple years. KU would matchup really well with the Illini imo, Luther Head/JR Giddens same player. Brown/Miles wipe each other out. Langford doesnt have the range of Williams, but can take him to the hole all day. Simien is the man who would make a difference in this matchup. Granted, the Illiini bench is better at this point, but still no answer for Big DUB.

I would like nothing more than a UNC / Kansas national championship game. Let Roy continue his run of Final Four losses against the players he left.
although Illinois could make the same case against Kansas.

Personally, I think the Final 4 will be:
UNC
Duke
Kentucky
Louisville
Final 8:
Wake
Illinois
Cuse
