Well, I ended up going down to the MAAC games tonight, but I did have a TV to watch on also, so I did get to see most of the Carolina game. I tell you what, I had a lot of fun watching it. Lawson is very very good, but which one is #14? He doesn't look so great. I'm now convinced Hansbrough should be POY. Hands down, no questions asked. Man he goes hard, unbelievable.

Rider and Marist are winners tonight. Charron Fisher took a bad Intentional Foul right at the end of the game, that really killed Niagara's chances. So tomorrow's semi-finals are Siena vs. Loyola (MD) and Rider vs. Marist. Should be two good ones....

Xavier knocks out Richmond at home tonight by 25. Drew Lavender took the DNP tonight on Senior Night. Really not sure what any of this means. It's been almost a month since he sprained his ankle, and things have been very fragile since. Xavier plays Thursday at noon vs. the winner of St. Louis vs. Dayton....

I did get to see the 2nd half of the Zona/Oregon game. The Ducks made shots, straight up. I still think Oregon has much more work to do than Arizona does. I think Zona needs two in the Pac-10 Tourney. The first game is vs. Oregon St., which isn't gonna do anything for them, so they need that second one, to me.

Anybody remember one of those Knicks/Heat series from back in the late 90s? A dude named Carter (I can't remember his first name) for the Heat beat the Knicks on a shot that went over the backboard and dropped in the hoop on the other side. That shot should've been ruled no good, but it wasn't. Same deal today.

I didn't realize the clocks went up today. This really sucks. But as I told my buddy, I tend to lose a lot of sleep in the month of March, and it's wonderful :D

Congrats to all the Tar Heels on here :thumbsup

Greg saved our asses at the end of the first half. But when your senior (Demarcus) played the way he did, everything goes down hill. Still no excuses. With the way we played I will take a 1-1 series on the year. Hopefully we can win the ACC tourney to gain SOMETHING back but who knows. I'm still in such a bad mood. :lol

Congrats again to UNC... and that Dunk... UNREAL. Greg deserved it for the way he attempts to play PG. Shoots well, but wishes he could pass like Nolan Smith.

:mad :thumbsup

P.S. - Fuck UCLA. Undeserving pieces of SHIT. Nuff said.

Well the Tar Heels win really closed my week out right. Danny Green was a beast and overall I was very pleased with the defensive effort.

In other news for Heels fans, Tyler Zeller had 38 points and 16 rebounds to advance his team to semi-state next weekend. He had 31 in their morning game. The kid is sick!

If you are referring to the Danny Green dunk... yea, that was an UNREAL dunk. Best dunk I've seen in a game in sometime.

I feel that the Heels need to at least get to the ACC championship game to gain the overall #1 seed in the tournment. I do believe they have the #1 seed in the east with last nights win.

And one last thing, going 13-0 away from home is bad ass. I can deal with a loss or two at home, but love it when the Heels win on the road, in a hostile enviroment, especially at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The reason that loss hurts Arizona soo much more, was because Wise was playing, and that kinda hurts the argument that they are so much better with him back...

as odd as this may sound, i was actually pulling for UCLA yesterday.... :eek

if they lose and KU keeps winning, then we will without a doubt become the #1 seed in the West and they will be the #2 in the West. i'd much rather be a #2 in the South or Midwest, so i was happy with the outcome of the game. that being said, i think if KU wins the Big XII tourney, they take the #1 in the Midwest anyways....

I think it's time to take a closer look at the two Philadelphia schools that are still alive in the Atlantic 10....

St. Joseph's: After getting the all-important Xavier win Thursday night, they lost @ Dayton, which is also a very difficult place to play, not because of the conditions, but because those fans are very into their team and it gets very loud in there, especially as they fight for their at-large lives. So they split their last two to finish a very disappointing 9-7 in the A-10, and 18-11 overall. As we know, there's nothing in the nonconference to help. The great thing for SJU is the way the A-10 bracket sets up. As the #5 seed, they play a first round game vs. Fordham, and if they win that, they play 4-seed Richmond. If they can win that one, then they get the grudge match vs. Xavier in the semifinals (given Xavier can knock out the STL/Dayton winner, presumably Dayton). If St. Joe's can KO Xavier again, that'd put them in the title game, and maybe that's enough....

Temple: Different story, as they are the 2-seed, and on the other side of the bracket from Xavier. They finished alone in 2nd at 11-5, and are now up to 18-12 after only a 7-7 nonconference, which could very well be their undoing. They will play the winner of LaSalle/Duquesne in the quarterfinals, and then would get the winner of UMass vs. Charlotte/URI in the semis. I would imagine only a trip to the A-10 title game would do it for them. They do have the drubbing of Xavier early in the season in their favor, and they do have a win over UMass, and split vs. St. Joe's. I wrote them off a few weeks ago after a 2-point loss to Fordham, but it was time to revisit them after winning 4 in a row to end the season.

For the rest?

Dayton: I wrote them off about a month and a half ago, mostly because I hate them. But they're still on everybody's radar, so I guess they're supposed to be on mine too. They did what they had to do to get to .500, winning @ Fordham and @ St. Bona, then knocking off St. Joe's at home, to get to 8-8, 20-9 overall. They lost at possible bubble team George Mason in the nonconference, but of course we've heard forever they've won @ Louisville and pummeled Pitt at home. Somehow, despite the 8 conference losses, the RPI has continued to hold, right now at 38. They only have 2 Top 50 wins, the aforementioned LVille and Pitt. Maybe two games would do it, since the 2nd would be vs. Xavier? I'd think 3, but maybe 2?

UMass: They've won 6 in a row to end the year, albeit against a not-so-great group of A-10 competitors. Again, the RPI has hung in there at 36, but only 1 Top 50 win isn't gonna help much. Neither will being swept by St. Joe's. They did win @ Dayton, but that's really the only great conference win. Besides the 2 Ls to St. Joe's, they also lost to Temple and to Xavier. They are only 2-4 vs. the other top 5 teams in the A-10. The nonconference includes wins @ Syracuse, @ Boston College, and vs. Houston.

^ nope. You think he'll actually stay though?

And I'm not confident in this team going into March. Early exit IMO.

The thing is I think he will. All the mock drafts have him being a top 5 pick and with the future of the IU program in limbo, I can't say I'd blame him. He has been really off the last month though, asides from the first MSU game, and he really needs to work a lot on his ball handling.

I could easily see IU being beaten early. Depending on their draw they could honestly lose in the first round, a la a #12 seed beating a #5 or a #11 beating a #6.

SmoothD41
03-09-2008, 05:50 PM
Wow, what a horrible loss.

This team has given up. Gordon thinking about the NBA (he is not ready), guys pondering if they are staying or leaving after the season, a coach (a mediocre one, at best) who is just there to finish the season, no emotion, no heart....sad, especially for DJ.

There is absolutely no freakin reason for DJ White to shoot the ball ELEVEN times today. He should have put up at least 22 shots today.

This team has Final 4 talent, but I will be surprised if they make it to the Sweet 16. I can't wait till next sunday when the committee gives IU a 7 seed and ships them out west to lose in the 1st round.

When you live by the three....

Just got back from the Siena vs. Loyola (MD) game. Siena got behind by 17 or 18 in the 1st half, cut it to 10 at the half. Siena finally took over the lead with 2 minutes to go, and held on for a 65-63 win. I gotta tell you though, they were 9-20 from the stripe. Unbelievable they won the game. That said, it was fantastic how they grinded it out. When they got behind 18, they did the right thing. I think at the 4-minute media TO they were behind 16. I was thinking in my head, if they can cut it to 10 by the half, they'd be in great shape given how badly they played. Done. They got some key stops in the 2nd half, and that's what did it. But those free throws man. The Saints get the winner of the Rider/Marist game, going on as I write this.

Sean Singletary. How great is this kid? He's gone through about the worst year ever after last year's great one. He's on a team by himself, playing basically 1-on-5 all game. And every time I've seen him this year, he's always going hard. So glad they got a W tonight at home. That's a great way to send him out....

I'm going to take some Tylenol PM, I slept a bit too long today cuz of the goddamn daylight savings time switch....

VCU goes down, but they still have at-large hopes. This is bad for some bubble teams who weren't banking on the CAA being a 2-bid league.

And not all of the pairings have been released, so the Conference Pickems will be ready tomorrow at the latest, later on tonight at the earliest.

Are we making the A-10 a tiebreaker again this year?

Justin, you know it'd make me very sad if you didn't include the Atlantic 10. I thought we just picked 7 conferences? Maybe I'm wrong? I don't remember. Just do whatever you gotta do to include me. Ask Dustin what it's like to be on my shit list, I promise you don't wanna be there ;)

I don't remember a season where conference tournaments were this important in deciding who's in and who's out.

I agree with you sir. You can put several teams that may or may not be in right now that need 1, maybe 2 victories, to put them in. Of course the one front and center in my mind is your Wildcats. But look who you're probably going to be playing? A team who needs it even more than you do in Ole Miss. Others? I'm thinking a team like Arizona and Arizona State.

But here's the other thing. The chances that Memphis gets upset is very very slim. But what if a team like Xavier loses (which is legit)? What if San Diego wins the WCC? What if New Mexico wins the MWC? Less at-larges. It's just so hard to call, even right now.

You can call the locks ie-Carolina, Duke, etc. Any bubble teams is so tough because it will change daily depending on what happens in all of the other tournaments. I LOVE conference championship week :D

Well, to be honest, I think UK is a lock after today's win... But I wouldn't mind getting rid of any doubt by winning the SEC tournament. ;)

Yes, Ole Miss desperately needs to get to the finals to have a chance. Arizona needs 1 or 2 wins, preferrably 2, ASU needs 2, they have some strengths in their resume, but the Pac 10 tourney is huge for them.

Yes, conference tournament week is absolutely awesome. :thumbsup

Welcome to the 2nd annual antsmarching.org Championship Week Challenge! :bounce :multi :bounce :multi

Everyone's welcome to play, so please participate, especially you regulars on here.

Ultimate prize: bragging rights that our good friend Dan rightfully won last year, which consoled his poor Nebraska soul throughout March :)

Here are the rules, same as last years:

Make picks for every game using my format below by *11:00 ET on Wednesday.*

The conferences: Atlantic-10, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, Pac-10, and SEC.

So, here's the point system. You accumulate this many points for every team you pick correctly for a particular round:

Opening Round games: 1 point
Quarterfinal games: 2 points
Semifinal games: 4 points
Final games: 8 points

UPSET RULE: If a lower seed you selected wins their game, you get bonus points to be determined by the deficit of the lower team's seed from the higher seed along with the points you normally achieve by picking the winner correctly. (example: 9 seed Michigan defeats 8 seed Iowa in the first round you get 1 point PLUS 1 additional point for the upset. If 10 seed Illinois defeats 1 seed Wisconsin, you get 8 points for picking the Final winner correctly PLUS 9 additional points for the upset.)

Atlantic-10 Rule: Since not very many of us know about the Atlantic 10, but since it's also a semi-relevant conference (thanks Bob), it will count, but for half the points. 1/2 a point for an opening round pick, 1 point for a second round, 2 for a semi, 4 for picking the champion. Upset bonus points still apply the same.

Since I'm on the West Coast, I'll be in charge of the standings and everything else that goes along. I'll tally them up every night when you all are fast asleep and you'll have standings in the morning.

Here we go!

Did we have the upset points last year?

justinandimcool
03-10-2008, 02:43 AM
Yes we did have upset points. We also had this stupid blowout rule that I just don't feel like keeping track of of this year (if your team won by 20 you get 5 more points or whatever). We also had the A-10 as a tie-breaker, but I figured that would be useless.

UNLTrpt
03-10-2008, 03:09 AM
Cool. Like I said, I'll pick mine tomorrow.

OH!

I went to the Nebraska game Sunday. Senior night. Maric is our lone senior. Pretty emotional. Hell of a standing O. Came out and played really well too (16 pts and 17 rbs)

I think the team is playing really well right now. We were shooting the 3 ball well right now (Maric actually hit one from the top of the key about 8 mins into the game :lol everybody went bonkers) If we were matched up with ANYBODY other than Kansas in the 2nd round of the B12, I'd predict the upset.

Doc improves us 1 game and 1 spot in the B12. He's definitely got us going in the right direction. Now if only the fans would get behind the team. Good lord, the fans were SO quiet at the game. We were sitting opposite where the Nebraska bench was in the upper level of the arena. And my sister goes "I think its so cool that we can hear what he's (Doc) saying" And I'm like that's because its so freaking quiet in here and people don't cheer. It didn't get the nickname "the Lincoln library" for nothing. Its really sad. My mom and brother were at the end of the row and had stood up to begin the 2nd half and some lady behind them yelled "down in front!" True story.

:shrug oh well. Such is the state of Nebraska basketball.

I'll get my brackets filled out tonight.

I've read quotes by both Coack K and DeMarcus Nelson blaming "raw emotion" for the loss on Saturday. Raw emotion? Really? Why not just give credit to a team who everyone points out is not good enough defensively for shutting you down at the end?

i actually copy and pasted your picks to make mine. i originally had ucla beating zona in the championship, but then i figured why not be a homer. then i remembered that i hated ucla, so i figured i'd see if usc could beat them. i kinda wanted to take oregon over wash st., cause i'm not sold on the cougs, but i just don't think oregon can do it. we'll see.

:thumbsup Way to go Justin, way to get this thing rolling. I got a busy day, checkin in from down at school. Classes are done, got a tutor to meet with, and then I'm going downtown for the MAAC Final tonight, Siena vs. Rider, should be a real good one. 7:00, I think it's ESPN2.

Also looking forward to the West Coast Conference final. Best two games tonight :thumbsup

what'll really be interesting is to see if bayless decides to stick around to play for lute. something tells me he won't, but you never know. with bayless, budinger, wise, hill and the incoming class, this team could be dangerous next year.

updated bracketology....I can't believe he still has IU as a 4, after that shitstorm yesterday afternoon. I guess they do still have a solid RPI at 16.

Anyways....Kentucky/Kansas State, Davidson/Miami (FL), West Virginia/Baylor would be good matchups. The bottom of the field this year is weaaaaaaak sauce, the committee is really going to have to scrape the barrel.

Bracketology has USC playing Arkansas in the 1st round, and a potential matchup with Texas in the 2nd round. That doesn't sound familiar at all. Way to go, Joe Lunardi.

Well, George Mason's back in the dance...

GavMan33
03-10-2008, 10:56 PM
First, JamesM, don't worry, I got your back. Nova over Syracuse will be in my bracket....

Siena is going to the NCAA Tournament, as what I think will be a 14-seed. I think that'd be a good spot for them; 13 is too high to me, and I think they're better than a 15. It got ugly quick for Rider. I tell you what though, that Jason Thompson is a monster....

I see George Mason is back in the field of 65. Good for Coach Laranaaga, I thought he was a real genuine guy when everybody found out who GMU was. And he's stayed very genuine throughout.

You gotta think all those bubblers are already sweating. Everybody says St. Mary's is safe, so San Diego, even though it seems like they are being totally outplayed, would make it 3 bids for the WCC, something never dreamed of prior to this year.

Then you see the VCU loss last night to still-NCAA Tourney virgins William and Mary. Do they have enough to get an at-large? I gotta look at it closer to make an educated decision.

I guess Illinois State getting absolutely pummeled to Drake the other day was good; doesn't make a great statement, especially since ISU would go in as a 10, 11, 12-seed, and match up against a good squad.

And now I see South Alabama is gonna lose. Man Conference Championship Week is getting good, and it's only Monday!

Any bubblers in here? I guess we got a Zona Wildcat or two in here, and one of the Villanova kind. Kentucky guys, even though they seems pretty certain at this point. One more should do it for them. Any other bubblers?

Let me make a case against West Virginia please? This is really bothering me. They have FOUR wins all year against teams that are in the Tournament, which is including bubble team Syracuse. They're 11-7 in the Big East, but their only good wins are Marquette, Syracuse, and Pitt. The other 8 are St. John's twice, Providence twice, DePaul, South Florida, Rutgers, and Seton Hall.

And now they get to play Providence for the third time! This is killin me. Beat UConn in the Quarters. Then I'll be OK with it....

So what do you guys think the scenario is for the Mid-Majors with potential multiple bids? Certainly doesn't look good for Illinois State, VCU, and Mount St. Mary's. What about South Alabama? Do you put any of these teams in before Syracuse and Arizona State and the like?

Relax baby, I got you.

Last year, I believe there were 6 at-large bids that went to teams outside of the top 6 conferences. Now I assume by Mt. St. Mary's, you mean St. Mary's. And Justin, may I add, that's pretty sad to screw up since they are in your own state ;)

For the record, I love being one of the big boys who doesn't have to worry about the little schools fucking things up for me. :D

Also, Indiana recruit Devin Ebanks and Terrell Holloway have an out in their LOI if the Hoosiers are banned from postseason play or if there is a coaching change. Holloway asked out of his the other day. I'm not sure if Ebanks has, but it is heavily rumored he will look at other schools. I think this is a great thing. Kids today pretty much sign up to play for a coach just as much as they do a program. There should be no penalty for them wanting to play elsewhere if the coach they were recruited by is no longer with the school they committed to.

Saw the teams yesterday. Ty misses half the season and almost makes. Ver nice.

Also, great to see Hansbrough as an honorable mention for the All-Defensive Team. I saw the Big 12 teams last night and Beasley didn't sniff the defensive list there. Put that in your NPOY pipe and smoke it. :D

Tyler has no business being mentioned in the same sentence as the word defense, but when most sports writers in this area graduate from UNC, stupid things like that are bound to happen..... ;)

He's not dominant guarding bigs in the post, but is not bad either. Where Hansbrough has been very effective this year is guarding big guys who try and take advantage of his size out on the perimeter. His foot speed has increasted tremendously.

Did you see Rush and Arthur made first-team all Big 12? I was surprised Arthur made it. He's been inconsistent during conference play. Maric and James would have been better choices for a big. Not sure how you feel as a Kansas fan, but I am also leaning toward Rush on the second-team and Chalmers on the first.

As a UK fan I don't want a 8/9 seed... then have to sacrifice ourselves to a 1 seed... I'd prefer a 10 to be honest... at least then we would have a shot at the 2 seeds

:thumbsup that way you could play Kansas in the second round..... again. :D

just ran across an article about Psycho T that is sure to cause a shit storm. Mike Freeman of CBS wrote a controversial article that is already getting a lot of negative attention. here's just a sample to get you TarHeels fired up.... you can read the entire article here....

http://www.sportsline.com/columns/story/10700001/1

"America loves a tough white guy."

"Brett Favre has a Tyler Hansbrough poster on his bedroom wall."

"And I'm trying to remember the last time a black player was called the face of college basketball. Maybe it has occurred 500 times. I just can't remember."

"The only thing missing during some broadcasts of his games is the waving of the American flag and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner."

"So we'll continue to portray Hansbrough as the savior of life, liberty and pursuit of everything college basketball. An All-American bad ass."

"Tyler Hansbrough inspires so much fear, Bill Belichick is afraid to videotape Hansbrough's walkthroughs."

Hansbrough vs. Beasley.

better player is beasley, but hansbrough is not a freshman, unc is #1, plays harder and with more desirer than anyone in the country. dickie v said that he has the most desire out of everyone he's ever seen.

and beasley is going to the nba right? so a lot of people won't like that either.

wow you quoted Dickie V, that in itself says enough... Hansbrough has been blown out of proportion. Yes he is good, but NPOTY? NO... Beasley does everything and better... so Hansbrough seems to have more desire... so did Joakim Noah... that's not a reason to give him NPOTY.. it is a travesty if he wins when he is not the best player

Hansbrough becomes the eighth Tar Heel in school history to qualify to have his jersey retired after being named The Sporting News NPOY. Very well deserved ...

http://www.sportsline.com/columns/story/10700001/1

I read Mike Freeman's article last night. The guy is a hack. That much was clear in the first paragraph when he referenced his crack smoking days. Then again in the third paragraph when he compared Hansbrough to Larry Johnson in terms of "desire."

And his assertion that Hansbrough gets all the love he does solely because of his "Tough Whiteness." If that is what America loves so much, why was Mark Madsen the last guy in a similar mold who received anywhere near the praise Hansbrough does. How many years ago was that? If all that Hansbrough has going for him is his "Tough Whitness" than how do you explain him being one of eight players at North Caroilna to be eligible for jersey retirement, the first player ever (I am pretty sure) who has he opportunity to be a four-time All-American and leader of three teams in a row that went into Cameron and beat Duke.

Every year the media finds a player or two and oversaturates us with certain characteristics about him. Heck, four years ago it was Emeka Okafor and his "Black Toughness." Recently we've had Durant (athletic guy), Redick (sweet shooting guy), Morrison (diabetic, versatile scoring guy), Chris Paul (quick guy who is motivated by his deceased Grandfather) Okafor and Anthony (SuperFrosh).

the way i see the beasley hansbrough thing is like when kobe bryant had 4- 50 point games in a row but the lakers barely made the playoff's. he was the top scorer in the nba, but should not have won the mvp. do you guys agree?

i've been arguing with my two friends for the last like 90 minutes about beasley and hansbrough. i feel hansbrough. i'm going to make a poll in a minute because i really want to know what people think.

i think it's impossible to compare NBA to NCAA basketball when it comes to stuff like that..... the NBA is a league built around individuals, so it's like comparing apples to oranges.

a better comparison would be Laettner of Duke vs. Shaq of LSU in their college years. there was never any doubt who the best NBA player was going to be, but Laettner had a more successful college career due to the pieces around him and the success of his team...... and the fact that he was white.

it also isn't about who will be more succesfull in the NBA... which we know isn't Hansbrough... it has to do with who is the best player, pure and plain best player... and you cannot tell me that is Hansbrough...

if you want to look at it different and say who means more to their team, it still isn't Hansbrough... KState wouldn't win a game without Beasley, UNC would still be decent, if not good... Hansbrough is just a good player with a great attitude.. Beasley is just a great player

You actually don't know that its that simple. Different voters are gonna have different criteria for who should be named POY. The fact that Hansbrough has already won a few awards and is being picked by so many other analysts shows that its not as cut and dry as best atlete/player.

how can you not think about the type of leadership tyler has? he may not be a guy to get his team pumped with a speach before the game but with his hardwork there's no doubt he motivates them. if beasley wasn't the only guy on kansas state he woudln't be averging 28 points. if hansbrough played at kansas s
