all right, i think i'm done with my bracket.

elite 8:
unc over louisville
kansas over usc
texas over memphis
ucla over arizona (yeah, that's right)

final four:
kansas over unc
ucla over texas

kansas over ucla for the championship.

yes, kansas has fucked everybody and their mother over in the past. including me. but they just look like the best team right now. i think this is their year. until they lose to kent st.

and arizona is a team that can either lose in the first round, or make it to the elite 8. i'm banking on the latter.

Anyways, for the gazillionth time...

Everyone I know was an IU fan growing up. I loved watching Calbert Cheaney, Alan Henderson, Damon Bailey...players like that play. When I was 10 years old though, I absolutely fell in love with UNC basketball and Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, Antawn Jamison, Ed Cota, etc. Jamison was the kicker though, he was my favorite player until Hansbrough came along. Anyways, that was 13 years ago and thus the majority of my life I have been a UNC fan...and will remain so until the day I die. I sat through the 8-20 season and rebuilding year, and my loyalty never wavered. I wore a Sean May jersey to the IU-UNC Big Ten challenge game and had shit thrown at me the entire time. The smile never left my face. I went to IU to earn a great education and because it was only an hour from home. I supported my alma mater throughout, but I'd be betraying myself if I said I was a fan of anyone else but UNC.

That said, I'm amazed by how my friends aren't able to understand. They keep asking who I'll cheer for if IU and UNC play in the second round and of course I tell them UNC. They act disgusted, but what they don't get is that if IU does beat UNC I'll be devastated. There will be no celebrating on Kirkwood Avenue for me. I'd be inconsolable.

Same as you JRod. You have rooted for Kentucky hoop for a long time apparently. Yet you go to Georgia, but you keep rooting for UK. I'm different than you. I was (and still am to a large extent) a St. Bonaventure basketball guy growing up, because my dad went there and that's how I was brought up. I went to college at Xavier, now I'm a Xavier guy. And I'm gonna go to Siena now, but I'm still a Xavier guy, always will be.

As for the Bulldogs, I tell you what, that's the hardest I've rooted for a team not named Xavier for quite a long time. Which is interesting, because I really don't like the SEC at all. But I was about to hop on their bandwagon for the tournament. And then came the selections, and I wished I hadn't rooted for them so hard :lol

I look at this, some of you guys got Xavier in the Elite Eight. I'm gonna explain to you a little bit of the mindset of longtime Xavier fans (unlike me, who only started following the team in 2004). These people are very used to seeing Xavier in the tournament, but have only made it out of the first weekend twice; a Sweet 16 in 1990 and an Elite Eight in 2004. Each time, Xavier was deemed as a "cinderella" team by the media and the like, which was fine. It was great for Xavier to get out of the first weekend, that was the goal.

Well expectations have changed around the program. These guys want more. The Xavier fans in Cincinnati will think it's tremendous, and quite a feat, and a successful season, if Xavier can somehow get out of the first weekend. But it's not like that. A 3-seed shows that at least a few people have noticed Xavier, and see potential for big things.

Expectations have changed. The ground work was laid about 25 years ago. 2004 showed the people within the program that it is possible. And last year's loss to Ohio State, while devastating, was such a positive thing. Again, we proved what we know we can do. We can compete with the best programs in the country, and our guys believe that.

Expectations have changed. Xavier played #1-seed IU as a #8-seed in the 1993 NCAA Tournament at the Hoosier Dome, played them to a 73-70 loss. Played an Allen Iverson-led GTown team to 68-63 in the 1995 Tournament. We played 3rd-seeded Gonzaga to 79-75 in 2006. We played #1-seeded Duke to 66-63 in 2004. And of course, we played Ohio St. to the brink of elimination.

But the expectations have changed. Those losses aren't acceptable anymore. It's no longer acceptable to say "wow, what a great year we had, we nearly had the #1-seed beat." Because we didn't win.

We don't consider ourselves a small program, as you've noticed over the season with all the kicking and screaming our athletic department has done on the national stage. And to be honest, I guess in the scheme of things, it doesn't matter what the public thinks. What matters is to win basketball games. Starts Thursday at noon....

It seems we have something in common regarding UNC basketball. Yes, I grew up with everyone loving IU which made me want to hate them. I loved UNC basketball in the 80's but didn't really claim a favorite team until Eric Montross came along. Yes, that is an old name and yes, I graduate with him and LN in 1990. Heck, I even played basketball with him while in high school (not at school, but pick up games). To make a long story short, once he committed to UNC, I wanted to follow his career and started watching more UNC games. And when I did, realized how good of a program UNC was and ever since then, they became my favorite team. But because of this, I got crapped on all the time for this and it was really bad when I went to school (Indiana State).

I do hope Indiana can win their first game so UNC and IU can match up. I'm not going to jump the gun, but I do hope for this match up and UNC kills them. It will be sweet. As that should have happened in 1997 but Indiana didn't win against Colorado.

And speaking of the IU-UNC game in 2004, I thought about going to the game but didn't. I thought I would get crapped on as well and didn't really want to sit through all that. But thinking upon it now, I wish I would have gone.

And speaking of the IU-UNC game in 2004, I thought about going to the game but didn't. I thought I would get crapped on as well and didn't really want to sit through all that. But thinking upon it now, I wish I would have gone.

i sat courtside for that game....it was awesome.

From what I was able to hear on TV, it seemed that Sean got a lot of verbal abuse during the game. Some of it almost borderline offensive. Was that the case??

my upsets as of now are only st joes over oklahoma, temple over msu, and a very underrated game that I think will be very close which is siena over vandy. Vandy struggles away from home, I think they are a bit overseeded at the 4 position. Siena has 3 players that can score 20 and play a similar style to vandy. As for Xavier, I think they will make an elite 8 run and beat duke for the fact that they have been playing solid perimeter defense all year and duke relies too much on the outside shot. Thoughts anyone?

I can't bring myself to pick K-State over USC. The potential is there for Beasley to go off, but if he does Mayo is completely capable of matching him shot for shot and OJ has been playing fantastic lately.

I also don't like the Baylor pick. They went 2-6 against Big 12 teams in the tournament, and those were against K-State and A&M. They are just 5-5 in their last 10 games, including a loss to Colorado in their last game.

All and all, I think the Big 12 was very overrated this year outside of Kansas and Texas.

Baylor can score, score and score some more. Curtis Jerrells can take over a game and I don't know if Chris Kramer can guard him.

I do have Butler taking down Tenn. in the second round and Baylor beating Xavier to move on to the Sweet 16. The Baylor pick there is one I may change before Thursday morning. I really do like Butler going deep though.

in a game between teams with no stars, i'll take the team loaded with juniors and seniors over the team loaded with freshmen and sophomores every time. also on a stage this big between teams with no players that have experienced it before, adrenaline is going to play a huge role throughout most if not all of the first half.... and that pace favors Baylor tremendously..... and Purdue doesn't have the firepower to make any kind of substantial comeback that they may need.

I always told myself that any college basketball is better than no basketball, but I can't seem to be entertained by the NIT. I really don't know what it is :shrug I know they have something to play for, but as a fan, I just don't see the point.

I cheer for my team. If my team wasn't in the NIT, I wouldn't be interested. Were you interested in USC when they have gone to the NIT?

I mean...I don't want the Huskers to be in the NIT, I'd rather them be in the NCAA's. I really view the NIT as like a bowl game. At least you're still playing. Another opportunity to go out and see the team, see good basketball, and a good atmosphere can provide all the excitement that a regular season game can.

And its got all the benefits of post season basketball. Win, you move on. Lose and you go home. And if you play well enough you can see your team play at MSG. How freakin cool is that? We all know the NIT pre-dates the NCAA tournament right and used to be THE post season tournament?

Again, don't get me wrong, the NIT isn't 10% of what the big dance is. But, its really a no risk tournament. You lose...eh...you had an average year and can say you made it to post season play. You make it to MSG and maybe win it? You won a national tournament against good competition. With the NCAA tournament...a good season can turn to nothing with a first round loss.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand all of this Baylor love.

i can see them beating Purdue because of the pace of the game due to nerves and the fact that Purdue might be caught off guard due to their playing in the much slower Big10 all season, but i think if they win that their run is over. it doesn't bother me much to pick a mild upset and be wrong when i have them losing their next game anyways. the ones that scare me is picking a team to lose in the first round when they're very capable of making a deep run if they get past the first game. i've gotten away from those games this year....

it's not so much Baylor love, as a lack of anything else... I've got Arizona taking down WVU, but either way, I think the winner of that game will beat Duke... and out of pure numbers I took Baylor over Arizona...

For those of you who haven't seen them... Baylor plays European ball (everyone on the perimeter) and then cuts and dishes... and they shoot really well... I think they'll give teams fits, just because of the matchup problem... they negate any bigman presence... I could be wrong and Xavier could do it, but I am hoping for Baylor

true, but in this instance i think the game will start at a very fast pace just because you're dealing with two teams that haven't been there and nerves and adrenaline will control the first ten minutes. that favors Baylor (a team that scored 90 against a pretty good defensive team in Kansas). and Purdue doesn't have the offensive fire power to come back if they find themselves in that position.... and like i said, it's only one game so it's not all that big of a deal either way....

Well, I agree with you and Bryan. Like Bryan said, that guy's probably forgotten more than we've ever known. But I also believe Bilas is awfully bias, and to me, bias to the big conferences. I went on a rant or two about how I didn't think Kentucky deserved to be in, and I still do. I'm sure you all remember this since it was national tv when Bilas just shit all over Xavier on Selection Sunday 2007. How Xavier didn't deserve to be in. Sean, that's because all of the team's at the bottom of the bracket are good ballclubs that had rough spots throughout the season. If any of these teams that took up the last at-large spots plays to its potential, it can knock off the majority of the very top seeds....

If you remember, last year that was the late game on Thursday night in Buffalo. I was in a bar with my buddy in Albany because I wanted to watch the Xavier/BYU game. A bunch of people were watching Duke/VCU. When VCU hit the shot to beat Duke, there was a big collective cheer from everybody in the bar, it was really funny. Stanford vs. Texas is killing me. Great guard play is the only way to beat Stanford but they have handled some good guards pretty well. You can't guard two 7 footers and if the ugly ass twins go for 30 pts and 30 reboudns combined it's hard to beat. Fuck this

Me too. I had them losing to BYU initially because I'm counting on the Cougars to hit a barrage of threes, and for Plaisted to hold his own in the post. But all this hype had me change it, but I'll be kicking myself if the Mormons take it.

I have UCLA losing to UConn though.

Fun stat from Tirico: 280 out of 430 NBA players have played in the NCAA tourney. Half have made it to the Sweet 16. 93 to the Final Four. 1 in every 7 NBA players have made it the National Title game.

Easy for you to say, Mr. 4 games on 2 TV at the same time.

i have to admit, it's a beautiful thing. i feel like a 5 year old on Christmas Eve right now..... i'm chomping at the bit to grill out, drink beer and watch multiple tourney games for nearly 12 consecutive hours.... on back-to-back days.

Stanford vs. Texas is killing me. Great guard play is the only way to beat Stanford but they have handled some good guards pretty well. You can't guard two 7 footers and if the ugly ass twins go for 30 pts and 30 reboudns combined it's hard to beat. Fuck this

I was going back and forth on this until I realized the game was being played in Houston.

What a bitch. I can get 2 games at one time max. But hey, I'm used to it.

You've seen Portland State right? They're led by a 5'6 PG named Dominguez, exceptional passer. Not a terrible shooting team, but nothing stood out defensively. Kansas by 34.

just found this on ESPN..... pretty useless, but cool at the same time. Joe Lunardi ranked every team from 64 down to 1 (in order of their departure from the tourney) and posted a few notes and the score of what he thinks will be their last game.......

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/ncaatourney08/columns/story?columnist=lunardi_joe&id=3300831

some notables for the regulars.....

62. MOUNT SAINT MARY'S The Mountaineers have won nine of 10 after defeating Coppin State in the opening-round game. The ride ends in Charlotte, however, and it could be ugly. North Carolina dominates, 98-66.

57. PORTLAND STATE I thought the Vikings were worthy of a No. 15 seed. Not that it'll matter against Kansas, which was a No. 2 seed up until the final hours of Selection Sunday. It's the Jayhawks in a rout, 101-68.

55. GEORGIA Xavier has been off a beat of late, but the Bulldogs figure to be spent after their marathon hours at the SEC tournament. An incredible story ends in the nation's capital. Georgia falls, 75-57.

49. KENTUCKY This isn't a good matchup for UK. The Wildcats need to hold up against a tough and tested Marquette club that has key advantages all over the floor. Kentucky saved its season by getting this far but loses fairly handily, 77-62.

41. OKLAHOMA The Sooners are banged up. Phil Martelli is 7-1 in first-round NCAA and NIT games at Saint Joseph's, losing only when Delonte West was injured in 2003. It's the Hawks' balanced offense besting the OU defense, 73-68.

35. INDIANA This one's easy. I think the Hoosiers stopped playing a couple of weeks ago, and the committee noticed. So will Arkansas in a 73-67 victory.

20. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA The Trojans will find Wisconsin a whole lot tougher than Kansas State once they reach Round 2. You can just see the Badgers forcing O.J. Mayo into one of those 6-for-22 shooting nights. USC goes down, 67-60.

17. DUKE Let me ask you this: If Arizona and Duke had played in December on a neutral court, which would have been favored? The honest answer is "we don't know." Sounds to me like two teams much closer in talent than their respective seeds. Also, sounds like an upset special for Arizona, 71-69.

11. XAVIER The Musketeers are a hard team to figure, as their incredible balance can be both a blessing and a curse. What it's not is enough to beat another Arizona school in its home state. Xavier falls to Arizona in the Sweet 16, 75-71.

8. ARIZONA Why is no one talking about the possibility of Arizona's winning two games and playing in Phoenix? You heard it here first. The Wildcats edge West Virginia and then stun Duke. The run ends in the Elite Eight against Pac-10 rival UCLA, 74-71.

3. NORTH CAROLINA It's only a matter of time before Roy Williams faces his former team. That it comes in the Final Four is even better, but Kansas has an edge at the defensive end and enough big bodies to wear down Tyler Hansbrough. It's KU over UNC for a chance to play for the title, 81-78.

2. KANSAS The Big 12 gets its two best teams into the Final Four, but neither cuts down the nets. The Jayhawks leave it all on the floor to best Carolina in the game of the tournament and then succumb to UCLA's incredible balance two nights later, 74-71.

And it was Jillian's, so it's a huge place, but the noise was deafening after they hit that shot. Really funny :lol
i've been there :thumbsup

you loved the guy when he finally put you in the field in bracketology, and now you hate him because he's projecting a first round beatdown? :lol ;)

No, I just think he's a fool if he believes A) Marquette will score 77 points against UK. Only one SEC team (Vandy) scored more than 70 points against UK, and B) It is NOT a bad matchup for UK "all over the floor". I don't care if he picks Marquette at all, but I disagree strongly with the margin and reasoning. Also, I've never "loved" or hated the guy...

They don't really. Their strength are guards, and they're going up against 2 All-SEC guards in Crawford and Bradley, and a matchup nightmare in 6'6 PG Derrick Jasper, who was named to the CNNSI "All-Glue Guy" team (counts for something. :D )

Also, they are really weak down low, so they don't have an advantage there over UK. Perry Stevenson, a long 6'9 Forward shredded Florida and Tennessee, who are both like Marquette down low, with 13 and 14, and 18 and 10. Lunardi doesn't know what he's talking about here IMO.
