Not that anyone cares, but my bracket has been gutted. I should have taken advantage of my perfect first day and bet some parlays.

And I would like to go on record and say there was nothing wrong with dunk ucla did at the game. A&m did the same thing to Baylor this year in a different situation. Granted what happened before is another story.

T-O-P-S, Tops, Tops, Tops!!!

Gotta love this for my dear old alma mater!! I picked them to be in the Sweet 16 because I honestly thought they were good enough to get there, no luck about it.

Pretty pissed that Mississippi State didn't pull it out. I would've been one of the only to make that MSU vs MSU call, and I'm not much of a Memphis fan.

And when I thought Stephen Curry, I thought "I'll believe it when I see it". Well, I saw it. Twice. And dammit, both times absolutely phenomenal.

UNC going into Charlotte with a head full of steam, but so is Louisville. It's gonna be fun.

What a great day in college basketball.

22 correct picks in the first round; 9 in the second (my best pick being Western Kentucy in the sweet 16...)

Still have 6 Elite 8s and all four Final 4 teams, so I am in good shape..

In terms of my comments about the referees and such, my point wasn't that UCLA wasn't getting some more favorable calls lately - they have - but it is naive to say that other of the top programs don't seem to get that same benefit more often then others - ask ACC fans who don't root for Carolina or Duke or Big 12 fans that don't root for Kansas or Texas etc etc. In regards to some teams having bandwagon fans, that's absoutely true - and even though it is, I don't think there is anything wrong with that - just pointing out some points of views of fans of certain teams who've never even been to the state the team they are rooting for is located.

This is the 3rd straight year UCLA has struggled in the second round game - my only explanation, besides A&M is a good team who played great and was a good matchup for UCLA - is that UCLA, when they play those low majors in the first round, lose a little focus. Western Kentucky is going to be shooting the 3 like crazy next week; that's there chance of making it a game. Carolina obviously looked the best this weekend, in my opinion, and I think the Memphis game is going to be closer then a lot of people predict. I think the Xavier/WVU game will be the best of the 3rd round, that Texas blows out Stanford, Louisville upsets Tenn, Carolina cuises, Kansas wins by 15+ against Vill and Wisconsin barely beats Davidson.

GO BRUINS

depending on which bracket I look at.. I'm either 1st, tied for 2nd, or tied for 3rd... 6/8 final 8 teams remaining and 4/4 remaining for the final 4...

And as someone said earlier, I thought about Michigan St could get into the sweet sixteen but just didn't mark it down.

And what about Davidson. I thought for sure that G-town's size would have worn them down, but hey, they blew the lead. Curry got hot. I orignally thought Davidson could hang w/G-town because of where the game was played-they basically had a home crowd. They benefited with having UNC play the 2nd game yesterday as the UNC faithfull were there early and backed them. Davidson played UNC tough at the beginning of the year and the UNC fans rememberd that and I'm sure (for those UNC fans there) it was great seeing G-towm lose to them.

And finally, it was great this morning that I heard Digger say, "What, UNC is in this tournment, I thought they were a NBA team." Great stuff.

we're two games closer to the dream matchup...... i've got a feeling it's not going to happen. either Wisconsin or Louisville is going to ruin it, imo....

If I had to put a number on it, I'd say there is about a 50 percent chance of it happening.

Question. At this point, after an AWESOME first weekend, and tons of upsets have happened already, I wouldn't mind a top-heavy Final Four (consisting of 1, 2, and 3 seeds), would you? (of course I'm hoping UCLA goes down ASAP, but let's forget my bias for a second)

I mean, I haven't followed Western Kentucky or Davidson much this year, and if they were to make the Final Four, it goes without saying that it's a great story. But they've had a great rur, they've had their "One Shining Moment" already, they'll be remembered in history for this first weekend, so I wouldn't mind seeing the big boys that I've followed all year since November finally meeting up on the grandest stage. Sure, Davidson/Memphis or a WKU/UNC National Title game would be awesome for the average underdog-rooting person, but really, does the thought of UNC/Kansas, UNC/Texas, Memphis/Kansas, Texas/UCLA (again, refraining my bias), Tennessee/UCLA, UNC/UCLA facing off in the Final weekend to conclude this amazing year sound that bad? At all? I didn't mind Florida/Ohio State at all, and I think if we had a George Mason every year, that would ruin some of the novelty.

I would love to see a top-heavy Final Four, for two reasons:
1. UNC is more likely to be playing
2. The games would be absolutely nuts

We can discuss in the Preseason thread if you'd like ...

Continuing a conversation from another thread.....I agree the games would be nuts. A 12 seed in the Final Four would be great of course, what has more potential to be more entertaining: Davidson/UNC in the Final Four or Kansas/UNC? That's why I hate seeing guys like Wilbon saying March Madness will be "ruined" if all #1 seeds (or #2 and #3 also I assume) make it. It's no coincidence that 2006 was a lame Final Four, because George Mason was walloped by a superior team.

Great games = upsets. At least after the first weekend. At least. I know March Madness wouldn't be nearly as popular and appealing for the casual fan, but dammit, I think it's important that we focus more on the quality of basketball than the brackets, or finding the next mid-major.

But hey, if Davidson/WKU can put up a great fight against the big boys in San Antonio, consider my point void.

I first saw this matchup and I thought, "hey, a strong backcourt against a strong frontcourt. awesome".

But Texas' guards as well as Stanford's center/forwards have competition. I say whichever team can counter the other team's all-star talent will win the game. If Atchley/James can get rebounds and stay out of foul trouble, they'll give themselves the better shot. I don't see Taj Finger or Mitch Johnson or Goods equaling Augustin or Abrams in terms of offensive efficiency, but they've done a good job at defending the perimeter at times this year against the likes of WSU and USC. This will be the biggest challenge for those guys.

I don't buy great guard play beating them at all. Brook (and Robin at times) have learned to defend the high post perimeter almost as well as they do inside, and Mitch Johnson/Anthony Goods are not terrible on-ball defenders. And when Trent has these guys playing good team defense, they're not particularly easy to score on. But like I said, Texas will be their biggest test when it comes to stopping quick, high-scoring PG's.

Aside from UNC winning, what I want more than anything is to see some great basketball. I'm a sucker for guard place, so for me, it is great to see the six best backcourts in the nation still playing. I don't think Davidson has the players around Curry and Richards them to win two against a couple against teams playing as well as Kansas and Wisconsin, but watching Curry in the second half those two games last weekend was awesome.

There is absolutely no game I would like to open the Final Four more than UNC/Kansas. The only problem is that I don't think there is anyway that game could live up to all of its hype. It would be the most hyped game this decade, and I don't think it would really be close. That being said, watching Lawson and Ellington go up against Kansas' three-headed backcourt ... ohh man. Same thing with Augustin and Abrams against Collison and Westbrook. Memphis/Texas would be awesome in the Elite Eight. There are just so many great games that could happen, and as much as I like Cinderella, I don't want her to make it to the ball.

and if i may turn away from the mens convo for just a second...the husker women beat X today in the 1st round of the womens big dance.

I know I know its womens basketball.

:thumbsup I did see that Dan, way to be. It's interesting. Our women's team is pretty good, but the last two years it's been pretty rough when we get to the NCAAs. I think last year it was a 1st round exit to WVU, and now a 1st round exit to Nebraska. It's a tough hit.

Not sure if you care enough about women's hoop or not, but I know at some point our home arena, Cintas Center, is a site for the 1st/2nd round of the women's tourney, not sure what year though.

Bryan, I love guard play as well. I just don't think a team can win in the long run without it. Kansas and UNC both have fantastic backcourts, as does Davidson. It's been a lot of fun to watch.

As for a UNC/KU final, I think it'd be fun. Tennessee/Memphis, although it was quite sloppy, did live up to the hype I think. No reason this couldn't.

I'm home from Washington after an extended spur-of-the-moment weekend. It was pretty sweet, I'd never been to an NCAA Tournament quite like that before. I'm glad we came out of it. Of course I won't be making the trip to Phoenix. We will have a very tough game with a very hot West Virginia team. It's gonna be a war, hopefully we come out alive....

In terms of my bracket, I was very surprised when I looked at it this morning (I didn't do anything but sleep yesterday when I got back up here) that I was still in the middle-of-the-pack. I only have 10/16 Sweet 16 teams, but 7/8 Elite Eights and all four Final 4s.

As for that Siena game on Sunday, they did exactly what I said they would. If they don't make shots, they will have a long night because they're not good enough defensively and don't rebound well....

Same with our team. They always seem to roll against the non-con and then they get into the rugged rugged Big 12 (8 teams in the big dance, 8-0 in the 1st round) and finish in the middle of the pack. Last year we were in the 8/9 game again and we had a big lead and let it get away.

The 1st/2nd round sites are still on the highest seed's home floor I think. Could it be the 3rd/4th round?

I know that no one cares about women's basketball, but people should hear about what Oklahoma State has been doing. In 2006, the Cowgirls went 0-16 in conference. Now they're in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1991. Kurt Budke has done one of the best turn arounds for a program of all time. I'm no fan of women's basketball, but what this man has done should not be ignored.

This year alone the Cowgirls have sold out GIA for the first time ever (for Cowgirl games, that is), beat Oklahoma for the first time in 17 tries, recieved the programs highest seed in the conference tourney (3), played for their first tourney title and now are in the Sweet 16.

i actually think it could live up to the hype. i could see that game being similar to the games KU and Texas have played recently..... a game of runs in which the team with the final push wins a close one.

i'm assuming since you don't think "it would really be close" that you think UNC would blow KU out.... fair enough i suppose, but KU will be the first team the Tar Heels have played that has a good defense AND the offense to score shot for shot with them and not be intimidated..... i'd be suprised if either team won by over 15 points.

and yeah, the matchups would be fun to watch. i'd expect to see a lot more of Sherron Collins to match the speed of Lawson and a lot of bench use with the bigs by Self to keep throwing fresh bodies at Psycho T. i'd also be interested to see how much KU's team passing in the halfcourt throws off UNC in their over pursuit on defense.

side question, would Ginyard be the one guarding Rush?

What I meant about "not being close," was the game would be far and away the most hyped game in recent memory. UNC/Illinois was pretty big a couple years ago and Duke/UConn in '99 stand out in the past decade, but this would trump either of those. I'd expect a great game. By no means do I think UNC would blow Kansas out, and vice versa.

I am sure Kansas would throw tons of bodies at Hansbrough, which is a double-edged sword, because you don't want him to spend the game at the line. A big key for UNC offensively would be knocking down the outside shots they get when Kansas doubles Hansbrough. Ellington, Green and Lawson have all shot fairly well lately, and Graves defense has improved enough where he can get out there and knock down some shots without being a liability there.

I imagine Ginyard would be the guy to matchup on Rush. I can't imagine Ellington would chase him around the court, and Lawson doesn't have the size to.

I don't think Kansas has a post player who can handle Hansbrough alone. It would give Thompson and Stepheson opportunities on the offensive glass.

All in all, it would be a fantastic game. Maybe I'm a homer, maybe not, but I like UNC's chances the way they are playing right now.

so i was listening to the radio this morning and heard an interesting topic brought up and was curious as to how you guys felt about it.....

the topic being discussed was re-seeding the teams once the Final Four is set to give us the best potential for a great Championship game. for instance, let's say that this year the Final Four ends up being UNC, Kansas, Stanford and West Virginia. the way it is set up now, UNC would play Kansas and Stanford would play West Virginia in the semi-finals. it's fair to say that most people would view the UNC vs. Kansas game as the "title" game based on seeds and performance over the course of the season. the idea being thrown around would re-seed the teams after the Regional Finals and have UNC vs. West Virginia, and Stanford vs. Kansas, giving us the possibility of having two #1's face each other in the final game.

i like the idea, but haven't heard enough debate on both sides to make a firm decision..... any thoughts?

It wouldn't ever happen because it would ruin the whole concepts of brackets.

Ok folks...Durant or Beasley.

Just looking at their one year in college.

Beasley
PPG - 26.2
RPG - 12.4

Durant
PPG - 25.8
RPG - 11.1

Lets base this strictly on talent and not how much of an asshole Beasely is.
I take Durant. I'm with Bill Simmons on Beasely. I see a little too much Derrick Coleman there.

No way. A #1 seed, in theory, SHOULD make the final four. If they get upset along the way, so be it. Leave it the way it is, set the brackets and let them play it out.

I remember this had a lot of support after the 1996 Final Four when UMass and Kentucky were easily the best two teams in the nation and they met in the semifinals.

My take on it is that which regions play each other in the Final Four semis shouldn't be determined before the brackets are made. The committee should see the No. 1 seeds and put then place the regions so that if all four 1s made it you would have No. 1 overall vs. No. 4 overall and the 2 and 3 teams to meet. I don't think it is fair to the lower seeded teams to pit them against tougher opponents.

i thought they already do that. all year long on bracketology, they showed the final four as East vs. South & Midwest vs. West. then when the brackets were announced, they were switched to have the East (UNC #1 overall) vs. Midwest (Kansas, #4 overall) and South (Memphis #2 overall) vs. West (UCLA #3 overall). i'm pretty sure about that, but could be wrong.... i'll look into it... or maybe someone else already knows.

i don't like the re-seeding idea. i'm definitely not in favor of making it easier for #1s. they have it easy enough as it is.

i'd much rather have two great semi-final games than one great finals game. i'm just not big on "potential" for "great game."

but whatever, this will be all personal preference.

Haha, yeah, not leaving the state is nice. Knoxville isn't far from Charlotte either, although I still expect a predominant UNC crowd.

I have no problem with UCLA this year, but I did last year. It is the same with Texas this year. You don't penalize a team for earning a No. 1 seed by making them play what is essentially a road game to get to the Final Four.

Yeah, maybe. But CBS is dishin out $6 billion for the right to televise every one of these games, and I think it's worth every bit of it. Just gotta make plans to watch elsewhere. I think I read somewhere that 17% of the country will see the Xavier vs. West Virginia game tomorrow, and I'm not lucky enough to be in that area. So I'm headed to the bar tomorrow night.

My parents said the Xavier game vs. Purdue was on up here last weekend, but not the one vs. Georgia. But how can I blame them for not putting the X game on here? Carolina is the other game on in that time slot. Who's drawing more? Carolina or Xavier? It's no contest. And it's not like it's not on at all, it's just a small inconvenience to buy beer at the bar instead of drink your own :lol

For some reason I really started to dislike Budinger's game this year. Many times I got the feeling he isn't getting close to what he could out of his physical ability, especially on defense and the glass, which is where Arizona really needed help this year.

With all the talk about hoping that players stay, how great Arizona would be if Jennings came with Bayless staying, etc. I just love the comfort of not having to worry at all about whether people are coming back or not. I know that when a guy comes to Xavier, he will be here for four years. It's just a very comforting feeling.

Also a comforting feeling? Drew Lavender handling the basketball. Also comforting? A team that shoots 75% from the free throw line. Our guard play is fantastic.

Just wanna point out one thing before my computer dies. In our game vs. Georgia, Josh Duncan scored 20 points, while Derrick Brown had 19 points and 11 rebounds. In the game vs. Purdue, C.J. Anderson stepped up to score 18 points, with Duncan's 16. And Drew Lavender went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to finish with 18. It's just so comforting to me.

But our guys are gonna have to be ready to go tonight. WVU is a very good basketball team, and you know with a coach like Bob Huggns, they are very well-coached....

(GavMan33, even though you haven't maxed out on points, there is no situation where you can win. Sorry.)

I still think it is wishful thinking. And Jennings' recuiting visit was a while back. Bayless wasn't a top 5 pick then. It is extremely rare for a kid to turn that down these days.
Bayless also recently told Jennings he would be staying. IDK let me dream you UNC assholes

That won't even guarantee a PAC 10 Title, unless the enitre UCLA team leaves early. They still don't know how to play defense done in Arizona.Love is gone and that drops them down considerably. I don't see how everyone staying and getting a year older and the return of Lute doesn't make them the front runners in the pac-10

WVU is a very good basketball team, and you know with a coach like Bob Huggns, they are very well-coached....Don't me mad, but I'm rooting against you today. I think it will help my brackets alot more than an X win.

No, I saw it. :p

I really hope you're right and Bayless does stay. I really like the Zona program and would love to watch Lute coach Bayless, Jennings, and Budinger together. :)

Unless UCLA wins the whole thing, I am not so sure Love is going - if there was ever a situation where a guy didn't need the $$, this is it. I think Collison stays as well. Westbrook is the one that I think is gone. However, Howland has shown he can field a good team and win the Pac 10 without a dominant big guy.

UCLA has the top recruiting class coming in as well.

Lute, while definitley an improvement at coach even though he is 200, still doesn't coach defense that well.

I gotta give a lot of credit to our guys. How resilient; they got down 6 I believe on two separate occasions in OT. Lavender having the awareness to see Raymond running the pipe and getting it to him over the top for a quick layup to get it back to four. And then of course the two biggest shots of the game, both courtesy of B.J. Raymond.

This is the story of the season. Duncan has been an anchor. I think I saw he had 26 tonight. Unfortunately we got into foul trouble early on. Burrell got 2 fouls fairly quickly in the 1st half, and it showed right away. But unlike earlier in the year, we didn’t give in to Burrell on the bench. And Coach Miller showing trust in his senior, letting him back in to possibly pick up his third foul.

All of our guys were saddled with foul trouble in different parts of the night, and Coach Miller was able to shuttle people in and out and make it work. When we lost two of our guys, we had more to step in and get the job done. This is why it’s been such a joy to watch these guys this year. There’s no true “star.”

More to come later I suppose….

Carolina looked good tonight. Scary good. They have all tournament. I can't remember the last time a team won their first three games by a total of 91 points.

It took the Heels about 10 minutes to adjust to the game, but once they did it was game over. North Carolina was more than a little better on the defensive end than Washington State tonight. I doubt you could find me one person who thought that would happen before the game. The defensive effort is what is so great about toni
