UNC is overrated in the poll. i dont think duke deserves to be that high. wake deserves to be higher (no one saw that one coming) and miami, vatech and BC need to never join ACC basketball

OSU in at 24. and i have no idea who is playing for our team this year

why does wake not deserve to be higher? after winning the ACC regular season and only losing 1 starter and 2 people overall (1.4 really lepore never played and what good is a 3pt shooter who cant hit an open 3?) i think we deserve to be higher.

LET'S GO HAWKS!!! With both SJU teams nationally ranked preseason, we're looking forward to some good times ahead.
Jameer and Delonte (and the rest of the guys for that matter) are looking great and Phil Martelli just signed on as coach for 7 more years yesterday!

No way UNC is overrated. They've got two guards better than anyone on Duke's roster in Felton and McCants and May is as good as any Duke big man. If only they had depth I'd be assured of a national championship.

Wake surprised some people by winning the ACC regular season last year. And true they only lost one starter, but look who that starter was. They are losing 20 pts/game and better than 8 boards/game. That is a big loss considering the leader he was. Someone will have to step up and they will wait to see if someone does.
On the other hand, UNC only lost two players, neither of them starters. Being a UNC fan, I'll agree they are overhyping them, I just hope they can live up to it and then some. But the talent of the tarheels was obviously there last year, just need to play together for 40 mins instead of 25 or 30.

that's mighty nice of you guys :)
Go Devils. They may be a few spots high in the polls, but odds are they're going to be nasty this year. Their little hiatus from the acc regular season championship is over. I hope Mizzou clears all the allegations, I like Mizzou a lot cause i'm a big quin snyder fan(again, go Devils :D ). This year should be interesting--it's the last year of real ACC basketball. Next year everything starts to... ah, suck. I think ncstate will end up surprising some people this year(including myself). I had all but written them off, but I think they will be much better than expected.
And I thank God for Arizona. Had they not beaten UK in overtime, UK would have had 3 in a row. I don't want to see what Duke did in 91-92 duplicated :D

3 most hated teams (by me) in college basketball:
1. kansas (unworthy of a capital "k") - i'm from Missouri
2. Duke - the yankees of college basketball (although exciting to watch)
3. UCLA - who can forget that NCAA championship game (no mizzou fan can). they also play Arizona, but domination seems to prevail.

I'm thinking back to back championships. And speaking of good backcourts, give me Billy Edelin and Gerry McNamara any day. Cuse will show that they are still one of the best with when they played Mich St., Mizzou, and UConn.
UNC is overrated. Right now they are not the 10th best team in the country. They will struggle early and get better as the season goes on and maybe be there at the end. If Mizzou can focus on the court they will be good, if not they could struggle

UNC is very much overrated. i mean they have a good team and a good coach, but no depth and they had quite a few not good players last year. so unless roy williams is now somehow god and can make crappy players good while playing in the toughest confrence, UNC is overrated. people just want to like them. its sick, theres as bad as duke and dookie v.

Those 3 (well 2 and a half) freshman we had last year adapted pretty damn well. With an even more balanced team and less pressure on them I see no reason why this years class can't do the same.
As for UConn. We won a national championship last year and they beat us twice:lol so you never know

Wow. Just wow. You lost Roy and how many seniors? kU is overrated pre-season. I know the new coach is good but it's still going to take him 2 or 3 years to bring that program back up to where Roy had it. (And as much as I hate him the man was unbeatable at home. I heard a stat that in all his years at kU he had only lost 7 or 17? at home. That's a hell of a statment. Too bad you lost him.) Just bring it this year we'll see what happens.

I truly believe this is the year for the Tar Heels. Roy's second year at the helm so they'll have his system more down and there isn't a more talented starting five in the nation. McCants is the best shooting guard in the country, Felton the second best PG, May a top 10 PF/C, and Jawad is another stud. This is without even mentioning Marvin Williams, the best incoming freshman in the nation. Depth won't be the issue it was last year. Quentin Thomas will give Felton some backup at PG finally, Scott, Manuel, and Noel are all solid role players. I like this team a lot. GO HEELS.

to put felton anywhere near cp is a complete insult
Such an insult that the same experts you cited a couple of posts ago agree that he is the second best pg in the country? Such an insult that every website I've read has him as a top 10 pick for next year as of now? He has better court vision than CP and hopefully he'll find his jumpshot that was dominant in high school this year.

yep. that should tell you how good cp is
UNC41
10-21-2004, 03:17 AM
Ok, I'm not going to argue that Felton is better than CP. I also hope you can acknowledge that McCants is better than Grey. He is the best pure scorer in the country. He can play above the rim, has a quality mid-range J, and is one of the best 3-point shooters in college basketball. I just hope he can keep his attitude in check.

UNC is one of the best teams in the country, if not the best. Being a student at UNC, i get to watch all the talented ACC teams play. Wake is a great team, and is just as good as we are. Yes, i'd take Chris Paul over felton b/c Paul is a scorer. Dookie V has us as #1 in the country, and Andy Katz has us at #4. With Felton, May, McCants, Jawad, and Jackie's defense shutting down the dominant players on the opposing team, we are a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention Marvin William, who could have skipped straight to the NBA. Georgia Tech is also very good. I'd put money on UNC, Wake, GT, Duke, NC State, Maryland and Florida State all making the big dance.

could be a bit of a down year for our Blue Devils, considering what the ACC is stacked with. Dockery is going to have to come together VERY fast, and Shavlik must continue doing what he did against UCONN last year, or we're going to fall behind quickly.
Man the ACC was good last year... hah, it ain't even close to how good they're going to be this year! It's the year of the Demon Deacon, Wake's going to win the national championship. We'll have at least 2 teams in the final four(and UNC won't be one of them, though I can't see them having a bad year again). I'd say Wake and GT, but Maryland can go deep too. I think State will be better than last year as well(and, ahem, let's not forget they finished 2nd in the conference :D ), plus FSU and UVA should both compete for spots in the NCAAs. I say we get AT LEAST 8 teams.

OSU is gonna be good this year. Jameson Curry (freshman) broke all of the N.C. high school scoring records, got into some trouble (selling dope to an undercover officer at school) and had his scholarship pulled by UNC (who had been recruiting him since at least his sophomore year if not sooner). anyhow, OSU picked him up and he is going to be a very good player if he can stay out of trouble.

No need to worry a UNC fan at Duke probably wouldn't understand 99% of the insults being thrown at them or thier team. Thinking of insults to a team best sign I've ever seen at college bball game was Cinci at Xavier. The students were warned to "keep it clean". If you've done it for the last 4 years, at least be able to spell my school right: Wake FOREST. One R. And I really don't know if you'll be able to get in to the Wake student section this year. Last year there were only 800 or so Screamin' Demons (the org. that wears the tie dyes) but this year they've taken up almost the entire alotment of student tix (nearly 2400 I believe). Being a Screamin' Demon means you need a pass and a shirt and if you don't wear the shirt they're gonna likely kick you out of the section b/c they're under a new Gestapo leadership. Even if you are there, it's gonna be fun for you watching your precious Dukies lose to my Deacs. So far we've been the only team during his college career to hold JJ to no field goals during a game. Hope to continue that again this year. See ya at the Joel.

I think it depends how the ACC schools get split among the brackets, and the seeds they get. It would be scary if the strong ACC schools get put in all different brackets and didn't have to play other ACC teams (that's where we get hurt in the tourney).

I wouldn't count the Uconn Huskies out from making some noise this year (again) although Jim Calhoun does like it better when people do.
Even after losing Gordon, Okafor and Brown they still will be dangerous this year. They arguably have the best front court in the country with Josh Boone, Charlie Villanueva, Hilton Armstrong, Ed Nelson and Marcus White. It's the backcourt that is young but the talent is there and Jim Calhoun seems to always pulls things together in the end

uhm... they will... They split the teams in such a way that they wouldn't play each other until the absolute latest possible point in the tournament. Just like last year, we had GA Tech, Duke, and Wake pushing strong in their perspective regions.

yea, nc state has a pretty easy non-conference schedule this year. only game that may give them trouble is flying to Seattle to play #24 Washington the week before Christmas. those long flights to the west coast give teams problems sometimes, but they should be alright.

true. i'm a fan of neither, as a matter of fact my favorite shirt is the one that says:
CAROWHINA - on the front, and....
"i agree with Roy...I don't give a fuck about Carolina" - on the back
can you still i'm still bitter about Roy leaving KU?
p.s. tell me you're not a Duke fan while going to school at State.....please....
:lol
what a great shirt.... I need one. Lol. Anyways, I have no idea how Ive missed this thread for so long, the college basketball discussions in here have been top notch over the years........
most college bball faithful in here know by now that I basically bleed Jayhawk and Big XII, that being said.... ACC is by far the best conference this year, weve had big arguments in the past over the best conference year to year.... this year it is quite clear.... the ACC has 4 legitimate teams that you could see cutting down the nets in St. Louis. That also being said, each of those contenders also have a few more freebie wins with the strokes that are joining the ACC. I am very excited for this college season, not only because the NBA sicks balls yet again, but this has the makings to be a very competitive year..... great schedules and matchups all around, and recognizeable talent..... I think there will be a lot more parody in college hoops this year compared to years past, and the standard of play and competition will benefit will benefit from that.
As far as my thoughts with KU being pre-season Number #1 in both polls.... well, I'd be lying if I said I wasnt a bit pessimistic. THe last time KU started the year at number #1, we had Pierce, Vaughn, LaFrentz, Pollard, and Haase for a starting line-up, started the year 22-0 and then bowed out to Ariz and clowndick Miles Simon in the 2nd round. I do, however realize that was master choke artist, Roy Williams and a different KU team. I liked how Self handled the team last year, getting the players that he did not recruit to buy into his system. Simien has a really good chance for the Naismith Award.... will be a force all year long. Besides him, we have 3 other seniors (Miles, Langford, and Lee) that have won 12 March Madness games over their career at Kansas. We have the 2nd best recruiting class in the nation this year, and a super-soph that returns from a brilliant frosh season in J.R. Giddens.... Certainly a reason to look forward to this season, but again... I am a bit skeptical, Ive seen this song and dance before......
Other than that......the rest of my top 5
I really like Wake's team... (and who doesnt this year, the returning class is tough to argue with, Paul and Gray probably the best 1-2 punch in the country)
I really like Illinois team (Deron Williams is no joke. Dee Brown is no joke. Season may depend on wildcard, Luther Head......great talent, stupid head)
I like GTech's team (flat out out-played the Jayhawks last year in the Elite 8, cant find a reason on why they couldnt make a run again...unless Schensure is a one hit wonder)
Syracuse looks awfully tough, nobody gave them any credit last year after losing 'Melo, guess what.... turns out that Nat'l Championship team had a lot more talent than people thought)
UNC will be decent.... but they are ranked much too high for a team that hasnt proved jack shit yet.....shit, could have lost to Air Force in the first round last year.

SI College Basketball Preview comes out this week, and they went ahead with Dickie V's pick and took the Tarheels to cut down the nets. I don't see it happening.... Roy has had loads more talent this his current team has with little to no results come March. To be the best team in the country, you'd have to be the best team in the conference first..... not the case here.
Arizona looked pretty decent last night....I kinda forgot about all their talent with their horrible season last year. Loads of offensive talent on that team, just no defense whatsoever.....shoudl be an interesting team to keep an eye on out West.

Yeah, because one game can determine how the season is going to turn out. I'm guessing you didn't know that the only two previous times Roy Williams' teams lost their season opener they went to the final four. It is a long season.

Hey I want them to be as good as possible so when Duke beats them it looks good (for rankings). However losing thier opener by 11 to SANTA CLARA I have to think that when they get to the ACC schedule it could be ugly. Who knows maybe it'll be a wake up call to get it together.

Once again it is one game and to judge a team on that isn't right. Not having Felton hurt them more than expected. McCants is the best player on the team, but Felton is the MVP. Without him their chances go down the drain.
I wouldn't assume so much about Duke. They are lacking a point guard. Ewing and Dockery will parade around as PG's, but they are really just SG's in a PG body. Point guard play is so important in college basketball. We all saw what happened when Michigan State had a solid team with a hole at PG last year.

I'm looking more at the way they lost not just that it happened. I would expect them to be able to score more than 66 against a team of that calibur.
Actually Ewing will probably play more PG than Dockery (my own little opinion). And I get what your saying about injuries. Without Randolph Duke would be in a very sore spot.

Simien will walk away with the Naismith, and with these frosh they have flying all over the place, this team will only get better and deeper...... their speed, shooting (shot 64% last night) and D is gonna be real tough to hang with. We shall see, as always the talent is there, can't say enough about the way Self has the boys playing though.

The odds of 4 ACC teams making the final four are very slim. Yes they have 4 teams that have a good shot of making it, but there are a ton of teams that have just as good of a chance. I get tired of the constant ACC talk. They get talked up (not to say they aren't the best conference in the NCAA, but they aren't the be all and end all of college basketball) because of ESPN. The teams that really get shafted are the teams that are good out west.

Over the last 10 years the ACC, SEC, and Pac 10 are tied for national championships at 2 each, and the Big East has 3 including the last 2 in a row. I think there is a lot more parity in college basketball than some people would lead you to believe. The ACC is the best conference in college basketball, but they are overrated and over discussed.

ACC is over discussed, but not overrated. the ACC has at least five teams that could possibly make a run at the national championship. there's not another conference that could make a case for more than three, and three is stretching it. one team winning a national championship does not make the rest of the conference good. seven teams ranked in the top 25 does.

No doubt it is the best conference in the country top to bottom. But the teams that have won national championships don't get nearly the coverage that even the bottom half of the ACC gets. ESPN should be talking as much about the top teams in the Big 12 and SEC as they do the top teams in the ACC and Big East. They hype the ACC and Big East because those are the conferences they focus on showing the games.

The best thing about college basketball is often the best team does NOT win.... but its not like it comes easy....its earned...so all this bullshit on this board about what conference has won the most titles is complete bullshit imo... and I'm not directing this towards you, dmb1spe....but this argument has come up several times in this thread.... Duke won this year, Arizona that year, Maryland over here....blah, blah, blah that's great and all, but a Nat'l Championship does not mean that team comes from the best conference, nor does it make them a perrineal powerhouse. Underdogs will always have a CHANCE in NCAA hoops.

Right, VaTech and Miami are in the mix of the ACC as of this year, but I guess pollsters are taking the expansion move into consideration, so the experts say.... games against these weak teams will not hurt the top teams of the ACC this year....bullshit I say, but whatever...Andy Katz was talking about it, and I usually like his insight, he knows teams exist West of the Mississippi at least.....hopefully that same type of leinancy applies for the Big East next year.... they will have 10X the conference that the ACC is this year.

It is not a hard to figure out why the ACC is televised more often than other conferences. They draw the biggest ratings. Its the same reason why popular teams play more often on Monday Night Football or any nationally televised sporting event where networks choose games to televise. North Carolina and Duke are handsdown the two most popular college basketball programs on a national level. Maryland is up there also. They would rather watch these games than others so networks do the smart thing. And for those saying the ACC is overrated that is straight riduculous. Over 25% of the top 25 is from the ACC right now.

2nd being either USC vs. Notre Dame in f-ball or Miami vs. FSU f-ball or Ohio St. vs. Michigan in f-ball or maybe Florida vs. FSU... hard to pick a 2nd. :D

Up until Carolina's tough couple of years and the resurgance of the Yankee vs. Red Sox rivalry in baseball I would say that Duke vs. UNC b-ball was the biggest rivalry in all of sports.

maybe to the people that go there.... I dont think Ive watched one of those games in 2-3 years, all their games suck now. I'd have to agree about the greatest college rivals when these two teams were among the elite, maybe they will be again this year....matter of fact, I cant remember that rivalry being great since the days of Jamison, Carter, Langdon and Co. other than that, these match-ups, most of time are a complete bore.
ESPN did a poll on sportscenter with the same question about a week or two ago.... Michigan/Ohio State won by a landslide..... there were a couple others in there (Auburn/Alabama, Florida St/Florida) before UNC/Duke poked its head through..and this was for college rivalries.
and please...ND/USC??? doesnt one side have to win every so often in order to be considered a rivalry??

Redick and Ewing played a hell of a game tonight. In the long run Shav and Sheldon will need to step up, but with the way those two shot tonight it didn't matter. Impressive performance.

I understand what you're saying however, the last two years in a row the national champion has come from the Big East. Maybe there should be more talk about big teams in the other conferences. Again, I'm not saying that the ACC isn't the best conference, I'm saying ESPN needs to realize there are a few others.

I'd say it's the biggest in American sports, but it doesn't compare to the biggest in world football.

I think if MSU would have worked the ball inside more late in the 2nd half (they didn't do it until about the last 3 minutes) they would have won. Duke played a very good game though. MSU had their shot at them and they blew it.

I also wouldn't say that Duke, Maryland and Carolina have the patent of a national following. Maryland? Come on.. I work there and that isn't that big of a deal. Indiana, Louisville, Michigan St, Kansas, Kentucky all have HUGE national followings.
