I'm interested to know what you guys use to record yourselves playing guitar and singing. I used to use this cheap-ass mic that came with my computer to record and Creative Wave Studio to do simple editing and add some effects but the mic is now broken and the Creative program blows. I would like to find a cheap but effective way of doing some recording. These recordings are for myself only so I don't need professional sound quality, just something thats sounds alright. I play an acoustic guitar with no electronics so I have always just used one mic and done everything live. If anyone knows of a nice setup, please post. Any input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

i have a Fostex MR-8 multitracker. i usually plug my acoustic amp into with its direct XLR line out. i use SM 57s to record my electric amp and stuff like percussion. i dont really record vocals, but i plan on getting a condenser mic for that. i use Acid Pro 4.0 for mixing on the computer
all this can be pretty expensive though...

Yeah, I use the MR-8 in combination with Cool Edit Pro. I record with the Fostex, and then I do all the mixing on the computer, because the MR-8 is not a practical platform for cutting and pasting. I have a cheap Nady mic that came with the recorder, and it sounds plenty good for the stuff I record. I have an acoustic/electric guitar, but since the Fostex allows recording two tracks at once, I record both by plugging in and with a mic aimed at the soundole. Then I can fade them up or down to get a more natural sound than just the plugged-in track.

Here would probably be the cheapest way to go. i dont know if the names and model numbers i am giving are all accurate but if you look for them you'll see them. I would say get Sound Forge LX from best buy or Circuit City usually $29. Get a Behringer Eurorack I think its a 808, its like $49 (if you look on musiciansfriend.com you'll find it) you can find them on ebay for $25-30. Then get a Shure SM48 Musicians Friend has them with a 20' cable, and case for the mic for $29.99. (Not 100% sure on this model # either) then get a mic stand with boom from MF they had one on there for 9.99
Once you get these install Sound Forge of course, set your computer to record from your line in. Then plug the line out of the mixer to the line in on the PC, then plug the mic in to track one, and set the stand up, best position for the mic is about 6-8" from the 20th fret, not pointed directly at it, but at a small angle towards the sound hole.
Sorry about not having all the model numbers, but if you look on Musicians Friend you should be able to see the products i am talking about. $100-130 and you'll have a decent outfit.

What is sound forge LX? I've never seen that... just the regular Sound Forge 7.x etc.... and that's like $350 on sale.
Let me know.
