How much do you want to spend? You can get an number of guitars for a couple hundred bucks.

Washburn, Epiphone, Yamaha, Seagull, Fender... there's lots to choose from.

How much can you invest?

I would suggest you check out a local shop and tell them what you are looking for.

Skip the Guitar Center... go to a local dealer. If he's worth his weight, he'll beat any price a MARS or GC will post.

make sure you get a solid-topped guitar, which you still cant get for 150-200 bucks, washburn may be one of them that offers that.

contrary to what a Guitar Center guy will tell you, Olympias aren't that great. Get a Seagull or low-end Alvarez.

Contrary to what a guitar center guy will tell you, you don't need half of the things he'll try to sell you after you purchase your guitar.

yeah...buy the guitar ONLY. Later on, when you find out what other stuff is, get what you want...i.e. pickups. buy some Picks, and a Strap if you want. Dunlop picks are great.

Welcome to my world dude!! haha I just started playin' a year ago, I bought a solid top Yamaha, and its pretty good... but I have no musical talent and I just assumed that I could pick the guitar up and start ripping out a solo, NOT THE CASE!!!! Its hard as hell for me (at least) and I JUST learnd how to play the beginning of Crash, but then again you might be a natural so who knows, good luck though!! If you are a musical person you might be able to get away without lessons, but I wasnt so Im taking lessons to get the basics down, chords, reading music etc. Good luck!!

Ya rub it in that I suck!! haha Kidding... actually I just started thinking about learning DMB songs, my teacher has me playing a lot of Beatles stuff, and I dont have a lot of time to practice so I just stick to what he is teaching me, and then just recently have had time to start playing other stuff.... plus I dont practice a lot either hence why Im not that good, a lot of ppl practice hours and hours a day, I dont have the time to do that, and they always say "you're only as good as you practice."

the thing about a lot of dmb stuff is that it is more a matter of learning dave's techniques rather then explict songs. If you can get a good graps of things like closed chords, muting, and some of things dave repeats a lot (like the closed chords, tripping billies/grey streat/liog jam etc.., and common riffs that pop up in a lot of songs satellite, warehouse, etc...) it will make things a lot easier.
